2000. The first release on the LINE sublabel of Taylor Deupree's exceptional and challenging 12k label, SERIES is, like other 12k releases, not at all for those seeking smooth, placid or undemanding listening. If the words "conceptual" and "experimental" bother you, move along! But if you've enjoyed previous 12k releases, or works by such names as Ryoji Ikeda and Francisco Lopez, perhaps this may interest you.
12k says: SERIES is the 4th solo full length cd by minimal sound artist/composer Richard Chartier. Created over an 8 month period SERIES is Chartier's most minimal and subtle work to date. Employing soft hushed almost imperceptible high frequencies and bursts and staticy quiet low shifting tones... The works explore an implied silence that is not silent. a quietness that belies the activity and energy of the sounds. cyclical, meticulously subtle structured, vaguely atmospheric digital compositions. Meant to be experienced at low volumes or on headphones.
"Each sound is presented as a sculptural object, each a work of art in itself that suggests a quality of individuality...... the sound speaks only of itself and the act of listening."
