Rapoon is Robin Storey, a founder and former member of Zoviet France. Over the last four years he has released four full-length CDs, a double CD, two 7 inch singles and a DAT (Digital Audio Tape), and has contributed to several compilations. Those familiar with the music of his former group will be surprised by the different directions he takes in this solo project, although echoes of Zoviet France can frequently be heard. Without a constitutional guarantee of civil rights, in the UK we have no freedom of speech. Independent radio exists either illicitly or through the purchase of temporary permits. Since 1993 in Northern England ICE 105.4 FM has operated biannually with Restricted Service Licenses. This recording of a studio performance was a renegade transmission from the October 1995 electric series. A figure kneels upon the floor. Before him a keyboard, mixer and recorder. Cables, instruments and microphones rest silently, all arranged within arm’s reach. With antique headphones he almost resembles a pilot. Gently the percussion tumbles. The slow motion of rhythm begins its drift. Navigating airspace, moving into memory, into imagination. Time’s landscape. The gradual unfolding of terrain. The sound of rainbows burning. Wisps like little kayaks, trailing origins in their wake. The inert flowing. Fluid arcs over frozen water. Patterns etched into distance. Thought’s light traces. Have our lives lost the component that compelled our ancestors to travel? In their sagas Norse story-tellers narrate that there was no ice during the winter when they first landed in the ‘Vinland’ of North America. Natives of Greenland, their comprehension of climate would certainly differ from ours. Yet if there was no ice, did they somehow bring the coldness with them? Was winter the first element of America’s metamorphosis? Did it change yesterday’s continent of opportunity into tomorrow’s land of contradictions?
