Just a reminder about this other, earlier Birds of Tin release on the Manifold label, now that we have the new one on Hypnos Secret Sounds.

Augur and Birds of Tin - Strange Seeds come from Odd Flowers (Steve Brand category)

As we get ready to release our first project by Birds of Tin, we're happy to offer this earlier recording which was a collaboration between Birds of Tin, and Steve Brand's earlier musical identity, Augur.

We've fallen a bit behind recently on Hypnos new releases, but we're back on track now (just in time to be re-interrupted by the holidays very soon) with this new release from Birds of Tin, Rinpoche.

Artist: Birds of Tin
Title: Rinpoche
Label: Hypnos Secret Sounds (Ltd CDR)

Birds of Tin - Rinpoche

2008. Birds of Tin is a pseudonym for experimental sound artist Brooke Oates. He has previously collaborated with Rapoon and Augur (Steve Brand), and released several solo and collaborative works on a variety of labels, most notably Manifold and Mystery Sea.

We are pleased to announce the first release by Birds of Tin, Rinpoche, on the Hypnos Secret Sounds sub-label. This recording comes from an in-studio live improvisation from 2002, and covers a strange and varied sonic territory. Working in the realm of sound art as much as "music," the artist creates an effect that is hypnotic and at times seemingly psychoactive.

"Birds Of Tin is the one man project of Brooke Oates and there has been no new release since 2004. That perhaps might be right, since the recordings here on 'Rinpoche' were improvised in 2002. Birds Of Tin had releases on Manifold, Solipsism, Mystery Sea and XZF. What Oates does here is pretty much outside the lines of Hypnos: no finely woven tapestries of synthesizers, but a likewise finely woven pattern of all sorts of heavily treated sound objects. Lots of echo and reverb on the tea cups that is. Two pieces, together spanning some seventy-five minutes, whereas one would have been enough. Another difference is the improvisational aspect of the music, also not unlike Hypnos. Birds Of Tin seems to me a man who loves his record collection - don't we all - and particularly records by zoviet*france and to a lesser extent Rapoon. Sometimes things are a bit too haphazard in the way its put together, but then in other moments he proofs to be capable of producing a nice tune. A pair of scissors to splice the tape would be handy though."

Latest release from Hypnos artist Numina, though this new one is self-released.

Numina - Sound Symbols (Numina category)
(Price: $12.99)
2008. Description by Numina: "This was a 3-year work in progress which started out as the Almost Live project for the Ambient Ping download project. Over the years I expanded it with the intention of releasing this as a full-length album but it got sidetracked until November 2008 when I had some time to not only re-mix and re-master the original but also add brand new material throughout and what developed is "Sound Symbols."... Here's the third batch today of reviews of recent Hypnos releases, in this case our first release from Steve Brand, Bridge to Nowhere. Our thanks, again, to the reviewers for their attention.

"Recent entries on the label’s CDR imprint Hypnos Secret Sounds are of such vivacity one wonders why owner Griffin didn’t deem them fit for “legit” silverdisc; it’s a pleasure they exist, nonetheless. Making the case for Steve Brand’s credibility is a no-brainer, but more puzzling still is why his profile remains negligible in the deep libraries of serious ambient collectors. Having built up a considerable catalog under both his given surname as well as the more opaque moniker Augur, Brand’s traversed intercontinental soundscaping, digital rainforest raga, au natural acousmatics and abstract experimentation with the greatest of ease. Bridge to Nowhere is scorched savannah ambient, lethargic and lush, breathy and breathless, keenly felt across the two lengthy sojourns spanning the title tracks, where Brand simply allows his balmy drones to expand and contract at will. “Through the Lens of Love” departs from the established norm with some well-ordered gamelan rhythms that brings the artist’s fascination with tribal elderisms to the forefront, but eventually his nest of mbiras and xylophones ultimately become subsumed in the sticky mix. Great stuff."
--Reviewed by Darren Bergstein, ei-mag.com

"Steve Brand, a veteran of more than twenty releases under the Augur alias, recently began issuing material under his real name with the four-track Bridge to Nowhere his first for Hypnos. With three of the pieces clocking in at twenty minutes apiece, you know you're in for some hard-core ambient and Brand doesn't disappoint. He also wisely invests the material with a broad sonic palette by supplementing a number of exotic instruments (rattles, flutes, bells, conch shell, thumb piano, Indian fiddle, etc.) with found sounds, vocals, field recordings and keyboards. Time slows noticeably in Brand's material, and one's heart rate seems to do likewise—all the better to induce the meditative state one presumes he's aiming for. In “Bridge to Nowhere 1” sparse piano tinkles, deep tones, exotic flute accents, and soft, high-pitched moans drift over a serene synth base. By contrast, the sonic mass expands in the later “Bridge to Nowhere 2” until its windy howl reaches a progressively more intense pitch. Accompanied by the soft, late-evening chirp of insects, church organs lend a melancholic, hymnal dimension to “Breathing Light” that's not only calming but lovely too. The music's glacial unfurl camouflages the subtle swell in volume that occurs during the first half, and the sudden dispersal of minimal piano notes over the placid base proves arresting. As the piece moves towards its end, the insect sounds get louder, accentuating the sense of context that's subliminally persisted throughout. After an introduction of thumb piano and tinkles, “Through the Lens of Love” draws Bridge to Nowhere to a tranquil close but not before a near-symphonic coda takes the listener on a final plunge into the depths. It's the perfect soundtrack for those early evening moments when light fades and surrounding details gradually disappear into the encroaching darkness."

Another batch of reviews of recent Hypnos releases, in this case our first release from Darkened Soul, Bathys. Thanks again to the reviewers here!

"Mike Soucy, aka Darkened Soul, prefers to dive down 20,000 leagues under the sea in order to float Bathys to the surface. The large-scale impact of his scabrous drones hitting you over the head with blunt force trauma, Soucy designs some inescapably desperate scenarios of quite unsettling natures. Of course, as with most longform musics of such darkly atmospheric stripes, these endlessly shifting tonal wrecks stay for the most part static, which isn’t necessarily irredeemable. Darkened Soul will never be confused with the happy wanderer: the coruscating waves of echo and steel hull collisions of “Ateleiotos Agkareia” has roots sunk in decades-old bastard industrial obfuscants, which supports its clanky sturm und drang with some deeper imagistic heft, and also draws linkage to recent black metal brigadiers who’ve forsaken their guitars for samplers. “Trela” is all about dense vibration, as if a moth’s wings were miked then amplified a hundred-fold, on which caress a storm surge of galvanic rip tides. Things devolve when “Ypexairesi” unfolds its skein of cyclonic noise, oscillating static charges the color and texture of brillo glancing about the surrounding inimical terrain. Soucy doesn’t pull any punches on the closing title track, either; although the previous abrasive gusts are absent, in their stead hammers bang on grimy bulkheads, swap tensile blows with tongs, and occasionally erupt through the relentless and enveloping maelstrom. All told, simple but effective."
--Reviewed by Darren Bergstein, ei-mag.com

"Bathys represents the first appearance on Hypnos Secret Sounds by Darkened Soul (real name Mike Soucy) and, as the moniker obviously implies, Soucy specializes in dark ambient moodscaping. Rather less obvious is the fact that the Greek word “bathys” means “deep” in English, and is the root of “bathyscaph” which is a submersible vessel used for deep sea exploration. Without question, the six pieces comprising Bathys are immersive, and Soucy artfully assembles his sounds into disturbing, dread-filled atmospheres. The powerfully evocative pieces suggest the industrial murmur of a factory at three a.m. that one hears faintly rumbling in the distance, the ghostly night-time fog that shrouds a harbour's gently rocking boats in gloom, and the violent churn of amplified winds roaring through a hollow, chemically rusted-out tunnel. Soucy may admirably opt for understatement in his compositional design but there's ample textural detail—rumbles, soft tinkles, vaporous thrum, etc.—in play throughout a given piece. The ten-minute title piece evokes less a deep sea plunge than torture sounds emanating from a hidden dungeon; the intermittent clanks and strikes are just abstract enough to allow the listener to conjure all sorts of violent scenarios, and the incessant churn that accompanies it only intensifies the disquiet."
--Reviewed by textura.org

"At the other end of the spectrum we find Darkened Soul, which is one Mike Soucy, who has had a couple of self-released CDRs as well as a release on Umbra, the label of Oophoi. 'Bathys' means deep in Greek and throughout the six pieces there is thematic approach of deep sea - a bathyscaph is just a difficult word for submarine. The music is dark, like a deep sea movie sound track of rusty vessels bouncing to eachother, metallic sounds clonck about, set against a dark set of drones played on (soft-)synths. Music that would fit easily on Mystery Sea. More experimental than Borghi and more noisy, if at all that is a word that is appropriate here, than Griffin. Three different angels of ambient music. Maybe to the outsider the margins are small, to the initiated essential."

As mentioned last week, the next installment of "catching up with Hypnos CDs in review." Today, a collection of reviews of the latest M. Griffin solo CD Fabrications. Other, earlier reviews of this release may be seen here. Our thanks to all the reviewers for their attention and support.

"If its gritty, grotty, granulated textures are anything to go by, Hypnos founder Griffin’s own long-in-the-tooth Fabrications, the follow-up of sorts to 1997’s Sudden Dark, hasn’t squandered its evolutionary arc. At least he puts his money where his mouth/sound is—virtually embodying the Hypnos gestalt, Griffin massages, coaxes, and exacts all manners of eerie sonic turbulence from natural, neé acoustic, sources. Other than signal processing, Griffin has abandoned “traditional” methods of aural mutation and frequency daubing in the realization of six elusive, often incorporeal, environments. Cliché is abandoned, too: rather than allowing the natural ebb and flow of liquids to generate tension, Griffin’s samples of ocean and waterfall on “Water is Silver” instead rubs its mercurial tide up against a ballast of corroded iron stirred within cloudbanks of disinterred reverb. Navigating us and his sounds through tunnels barnacled and wind-etched, Griffin’s fragmentary snapshots, depixellated, the emulsion bleached and stretched taut, require his nimble direction, and our fertile imaginations, to hammer them into tangible, if fleeting, shapes. A somnolent piece of hauntology such as “Devise” appears as if wrenched from a carnival of souls, its disembodied voices caught in EVP flux, just out of reach and trapped between dimensions thick with echo and (reci)process. As you may now glean, Griffin’s tactile soundscapes subvert the ambient model in no uncertain terms. He achieves a fitful balance between poles, neither Lull-ing his audience to sleep nor making them reCoil in abject terror, though exposed to the final cumulative 22 minutes that is “Sky is Glass Lit”—rife with a veritable catalog of extrasensory percolations, altering tableau, and ghost cadences—it’s clear Griffin’s aural fictions are the stuff of daymares rather than nightdreams, a threnody of compelling, edgy, anxious grimbience with precious few parallels."
--Reviewed by Darren Bergstein, eimagonline.com

"Fabrications, by Hypnos founder Mike Griffin, is a different animal altogether. Eschewing synthesizers and ambient minimalism altogether, Griffin's long-promised sequel to his Sudden Dark debut (originally planned for a 1998 release, Fabrications was re-worked, retired, and re-worked again over a decade) is essentially a collection of field-recordings-based collages. But it's no slapdash affair cobbled together in a weekend or two. Griffin meticulously assembled “real-world” recordings compiled from multiple locations—freeway sounds, ocean waves, factory machinery, trains, etc.—into the hour-long recording's six pieces, some of which contain upwards of one hundred layers. What most distinguishes the collection is that Griffin 's tracks are less collages than compositions. Though constructed from field elements, the material has been arranged with obvious care, resulting in tracks that are well-conceived wholes rather than streams of random sounds. Helping to unify the recording are the vocal sounds that appear in varying degrees of prominence throughout ( Griffin 's voice moves to the forefront in “Devise” where the entranced repetition of the track title alternates with low-level industrial flow). With so many different and manipulated sounds sharing a given piece's aural space, the material begins to feel decontextualized, as if it's inhabiting an artificially-generated spectral realm. Overall, gloomy ambiance pervades the work and the recurrence of phantom whispers, rustling noises, and droning tones calls to mind the work of zoviet*france. After five pieces of modest length, Fabrications ups the ante with “Sky is Glass Lit,” a twenty-three-minute outro that's like an alternately peaceful and unsettled dream state transcribed into aural form—a description that could just as easily be extended to the album as a whole."

Regarding the question of reviews of Hypnos CD... I recently heard from one of the prominent reviewers in the ambient & experimental music genres, asking why I had not posted any of the reviews he had recently sent of Hypnos CDs. To him, and to any other reviewers wondering the same thing, I wanted to apologize and explain that I currently have a backlog of reviews that I need to sort through, format, and insert into the Hypnos web site.

It pains me to think that people who are giving time and attention to the consideration of our CD releases, and helping to spread the word about our work, may be distressed at not seeing their reviews among those I sometimes post here, on the Hypnos Forum, and the Hypnos Online Store. I will work through the current backlog I have of such reviews, and try in the future not to allow such a lag time between seeing the review and posting it. In the mean time, all should be assured that I don't post reviews in any particular order, certainly not an order of preference or anything of the kind.

So then, everyone will be seeing more reviews around here very soon. To those of you who have written reviews of Hypnos CDs and wondered why they haven't been posted here, I apologize and assure you that I meant no slight toward your important and appreciated efforts.

"A wonderful compilation from Hypnos, featuring women in ambient music. Highly recommended."
--Scott Raymond, WVKR-FM

"It sort of beats me why after a mere three months we get another compilation by Hypnos. Of course with many new names, but if a compilation is to promote the artists on your label, then why not release those artists? The two CDR releases also received are by people who I haven't seen on either of these compilations. The only name I recognized was Gydja and no doubt Lena Griffin is connected to labelboss M. Griffin. What ties these ten tracks together is the fact that all of this are by female composers. Some of them operate in the strict Hypnos field of ambient music, such as Kristin Miltner, Margaret Noble, Sara Ayers, Gydja, Amanda Volta (though quite dark there), K. Cornelius (with too much reverb). The exceptions here are made by Stelleria Fennica, whose pieces has some ethereal singing (think Hyperium' 'Heavenly Voices' series), the marimba and glockenspiel minimalism of Clarissa Barba and the treated piano of Rose Bolton. Lena Griffin's piece for heavily treated viola might pass on as true Hypnos music too, but its so dark that it falls outside the well-known paths too. These four tracks make the difference here, but throughout it was a most enjoyable compilation, with many interesting names to watch out for."

"Haven't seen many (any?) comments on this CD so thought I'd dive right in with my review. This one's turning out to be the perfect soundtrack to the fall/winter season, full of melancholy floating watery soundscapes. The beautiful cover art on this release really fits the music contained within. Unfortunately, the disc opens with an awful track that annoys rather than soothes, "Nufon" by Margaret Noble. Didn't quite see how this one fit. Luckily it is only 3 minutes! Onto track 2, "Hibernia" by Stellaria Fenica. Now I never would have guessed I'd hear something like this on a Hypnos album, but it's great stuff. File under "goth ambient." If you're familiar with the Swedish goth band Arcana, who are one of the few (IMO) artists to do the Dead Can Dance style with class and originality, this will be right up your alley. Martial drumbeats, melodic piano, Lisa Gerrard-like vocals, and tons of reverb. This would have been a much better opening track. Track 3, "Slew Wave," by Kristin Miltner. Wow, what a great track. Think female Saul Stokes, I kid you not! Drifty experimental ambient w/heavenly processed female vocals. 13 minutes very well spent. Track 4, "Floating Tones" by Clarissa Borba. Keeps the "water"' imagery going with what sound like a xylophone and bells. For some reason I think of Harold Budd on this one, perhaps in that it's quite "musical" and a bit avant-garde. Very nicely done. Next up is the Sara Ayers track "There Was No More Time." She's one of the few artists I'd heard of before on this collection. Some great (female of course)choral voices reminiscent of Eno's "Music for Airports" augmented with beautiful electronic drones. Definitely one of my favorites on this disc. "An Unheard Message" by Rose Bolton--we're back in Harold Budd-land with Budd-like piano chords and tinkly flourishes of notes, cello, bells, some Alio Die-infused organic scrapes, and nice effects processing. Again, quite "musical" like the Borba piece, and again very aquatic sounding. Next up is Gydja, who I'd heard before with her excellent Mystery Sea release a couple years back. Nice electronic based soundscape with watery effects, some samples of a female scientist(?) speaking about cosmic rays. Another very cool track. "Kanam" by The Floating World (aka Amanda Votta) is a dark ambient stunner done in collaboration with Gustaf Hildebrand (Cyclic Law label). This is some very deep cosmic/organic ambient, Oophoi fans take note. An amazing track. "Of the Ancients" by K. Cornelius fuses reverb-drenched bells, and echoing electronic effects, reminded me very much of Rapoon/Zoviet France (two very good reference points!) Another fantastic piece. Finally, we have Lena's "She Forgot, She Dreamed," heavily processed viola piece with a very big Alio Die feel to it. A great way to close this very psychoactive and meditational album. This disc is really successful in keeping a theme going (for me, that was water) and moving seamlessly from one track to the next, even though some of the pieces are quite different stylistically. I am counting "Echoes of Polyhymnia" among my top five of 2008. Great job, Lena!!!"

"I received "Echoes of Polyhymnia" yesterday and have only been able to listen to it once. I agree with Drone On that this a very good release. I used to not care much for compilations, but the recent batch of Hypnos comps have made me change my mind. I look forward to listening to this release a lot more this weekend. I disagree with Drone On , however, about Margeret Noble's track "Nufon". I did enjoy this piece. The second track, "Hibernia" did catch me by surprise , but not in an unpleasant way. All in all, another excellent Hypnos release. Way to go, Lena."

Various Artists - Echoes of Polyhymnia (compilation)

2008. Polyhymnia was one of the Muses of Greek myth, specifically the Muse of sacred hymn. Echoes of Polyhymnia compiles music in ambient and related genres composed and recorded exclusively by women. This genre is so male-dominated generally that we had a lot of fun gathering interesting ambient sounds, including some works that have one foot in ambient territory and another foot in one of several different, related genres. It covers styles and flavors as diverse as ambient, drone, glitch, vocal collage, goth and electronica.

Hypnos manager (and artist) Lena Griffin curated this specially-themed compilation which gathers an assortment of ambient & atmospheric sound works from around the world. This project reveals a totally new angle on ambient music, more diverse and wide-ranging than all previous ambient compilations from Hypnos. Ranging from ethereal to dark to pretty to spooky to melodic, we think this album displays a solidly worthwhile musical and soundscape content beyond just the curiosity and "I've never seen that before" factor of the theme.

"The nine Muses struck up a lifestirring melody. Polyhymnia, nursingmother of the dance, waved her arms and sketched in the air an image of a soundless voice, speaking with hands and moving eyes in a graphic picture of silence full of meaning." --The Dionysiaca of Nonnus

So often, limited-release recordings go out of print before many people are able to get a chance to hear about them, and often an artist's later work starts to gather new fans, who wish they could have had a chance to find some of that artist's earlier recordings, which are no longer available. We love to be able to use our Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint to enable interesting and worthwhile recordings to get back in print. Here is Drifts by Ben Fleury-Steiner.

Ben Fleury-Steiner - Drifts

2008. Hypnos Secret Sounds reissue of an out-of-print early release on Fleury-Steiner's own Gears of Sand label. Drifts is a nice set of electronic ambient tracks combining different repeating loops which overlap at different rates, falling (or drifting?) in and out of sync with one another, creating ever-changing organic ambient textures. "Ben Fleury-SteinerÕs release ŅDriftsÓ is a fantastic combination of dreamlike ambience paired with melodic phrases and repeated samples. While many electronic artists have a tendancy to focus on one style, Fleury-Steiner is willing to take chances and pair different sound sources in a very successful and effective way. The mood is set with opener ŅSundialÓ where percolating synths and a collection of looping patterns blend beautifully together. ŅFlickerÓ follows, a piece where analog pulses and pads give a sense of breathing and life, creating an organic feeling that immediately connects with the listener. ŅDescriptivesÓ incorporates minimal percussive elements amidst a framework of flowing pads. It works to great effect, maintaining the floating calm of the ambient ideal, but again adding a human element to the track. Very nice. The four part ŅDreamsÓ suite follows, with the first segment ŅSomnium ScipionisÓ presenting a constantly shifting landscape of sounds and forms. Up next is ŅVeritable SplendorÓ with a lush and beautiful latticework of sweeping and floating sounds that dance around the soundfield, shifting around and through each other. ŅThe Dust That Lies BetweenÓ follows a similar vein, adding short analog phrases that repeat throughout the course of the track. ŅAbsens in RemotaÓ completes the suite, a long form piece that incorporates thematic ideals from the earlier songs in the cycle and bringing them all together. ItÕs very nice work, a lovely example of conceptual ambience. Track eight, ŅCicadaÓ, uses higher pitched tones and backwards looping to distinguish itself from the previous tracks. ItÕs nicely done, and while stylistically it differs from previous tracks on the disc, it still maintains a thematic consistency that works well. ŅTrack nine, ŅTensileÓ features a buzzing lead line that plays overtop a low drone based background. ŅHealÓ follows, a calm and meditative ambient track where tones weave and loop around each other. ŅHomeÓ closes the disc with bubbling tones taking on a percussive role for a collection of samples and tones, creating a very interesting example of locational ambience. ŅDriftsÓ is a disc that captures the imagination and inspires the senses. ItÕs a fantastic synthesis of sounds and styles, and a wonderful example of how differing sounds can be brought together to create something fresh and exciting. A wonderful piece of work!

"Though favoring the kind of broad sweeps that only irising analog filters so triumphantly utter, Fleury-Steiner is careful to avoid the kind of artful banality that has stifled the creative impetus of, say, the last decade of VangelisÕ output. Not for ŅambianceÓ only, these sumptuous Drifts are too playfully captivating for casual ingestion."

"This CD from 2005 offers 60 minutes of lightly coarse ambience. Combining shrill sounds with vaporous resonance, this music ventures just beyond the normal background aspect exemplified by most ambient compositions. While the tonalities never reach any degree of harshness, they are generally more piercing that conventional ambience. Mixed with fragile atmospheric swells, these grittier sounds are sedated, made more sympathetic. This union produces a curious temperance that is refreshing. Mechanical grindings swim in a pool of shimmering clouds. Sparkling chords coexist with twilight drones. Bass gurgles penetrate swaying notes that vibrate with a peculiar luminosity. Playful diodes sigh in tandem with lavish textural spreads. While normal ambient compositions take their time slowly evolving into a substantial presence, these tunes get right to the point, then embellish on their themes with engaging variations. With the exception of one twelve minute piece, the tracks average about five minutes in duration, suiting their compressed directness. This longer track pursues an unhurried path in the same mode, blending celestial passages with demonstrative punctuations in a manner that transcends time and space, resulting in an entertaining excursion into nebulous realms of slightly edgy disposition. This release was mastered by ambient pioneer, Robert Rich."

"Fleury-Steiner manages to work within a genre that seems to turn out new material as regularly as breathing, yet Drifts has an individual sound, a personality of its own - whilst ideal as aural ambiance it certainly doesn't sink blandly into the background, the structures are too engaging to ignore, too attractive to dismiss."

Yet another chapter in the book of "catching up with CD reviews," here we have some recent reviews and comments regarding Fabrications by M. Griffin, which has been our surprise best-seller of 2008 so far, even surpassing the two well-received compilations.

"Over a decade in the making, M. Griffin’s Fabrications CD is inventive ambience that challenges preconceptions of what constitutes “music.” Only processed field recordings are used, culled from a variety of unique settings, ranging from a Hawaiian beach to a steel sheet cutter. The end result reminds me of other experimental ambient recordings, such as harmonic vocals in a cistern or underwater ambience. Tones are deeply resonant, more like white noise than music, but strangely soothing. Although vocals are not mentioned as source material, I think I can hear some briefly, albeit unintelligibly, in “Water is Silver.” Mechanical churning and pulsing characterizes “Gravity,” and it sounds like being pulled into a vortex. If I had to guess, “Behind” would be the track that uses the steel sheet cutter, although most tracks have a sort of industrial feel at times, none more so than the hard, cold, darkness of the 23-minute closer, “Sky is Glass Lit.” This is a particularly deep dive into all things dark ambient, culminating in a narrative of some sort, though processing renders it alien in nature, which is perhaps the best way to describe this inventive adventurous album."

"Labelboss M. Griffin is also a musician and in the past he made some nice blueprints of ambient music. Looking at the cover, I suspected not much development, but that is not true. Gone are the days of the synthesizer and welcomed are the field recordings. From sounds from the ocean to footsteps in a tunnel and then towards a large electrical transformer, plus more, he collected them all, and transforms them using a bunch of software - all dully described on the cover of his release. Not that the music sounds radically different than his old work, but this new approach is kinda refreshing, I think. Somewhere in the back you can hear these field recordings coming a long, but they are well hidden in the grass that the music is. A field of sound, based of the sound of a field. Like much of this music there is only a few developments per track, but throughout has each piece a character of its own. Its good to see Griffin moving away from the world of synthesizer ambient and creating a similar kind of music with entirely new elements. As such this is a great disc. "

"It is getting ever more difficult to categorise or classify certain releases that come my way, with an increasingly growing core of artists that fuse a multitude of disciplines and genres, commentators like myself are struggling to slot these releases into neatly describable pigeon-holes. Very loosely M.Griffin is indeed a minimalist, maybe even an ambient artist that much is for certain, but his sound is not easily contained within any category of music as such, as the material here is sourced from field recordings..ok..so he is a field recording artist, but then he uses these field recordings and manipulates such sounds as steel sheet cutters, aircraft and ocean sounds, electrical transformers etc to create slightly angular ambiences..so he’s a musique concret artist as well..are you getting my drift? It seems as if my job is getting more difficult, and yet from a consumer’s point of view, I guess you just need to know what this all sounds like, right?

Well, not to be confused with the recent Chartier/Tietchens “Fabrication” release, Fabrications opens with Water is Silver - a dense, vaporous piece that draws upon all manner of ambiences, including looped, echoing voices, that nowadays sounds a little cheesy, and would have benefitted from being edited out of the final mix..but hey ho..it adds a little humanity as a reference point within this swirl of breathy ambience. Gravity is similar, using a bubbly central theme which then opens up into cavernous ambience, and once again..those little echoing voices creep into the mix.

By the time I get to half way into this collection, I’m getting a general feel for Griffin’s approach, and whilst the use of a variety of sources is admirable, a lot of the time, the ambience is washed out with endless reverb, and low- end sounds that detract from the beauty of the field recordings. If you are proudly declaring that “no synthesised or non-acoustic sounds” are present on the recording, then it seems strange that it is then made to sound just like it DOES have synthesised material on it..this a capably handled collection of works, but I feel that Mr Griffin could have pushed the beauty of his source material forward, and not over treating it would have yielded a more impressive result. Not earth-shattering..but well worth a second listen…and for all you old Isolationists out there, this will most definitely float your boat."

"Loving Fabrications by the way- I was just reading a screenplay sent to me by an SF writer, and forgot that I had your cd on- It added such amazing ambience to my reading. The opening was on a deserted spaceship- and your tracks were just perfect- atmospheric and slightly creepy but not in a garish way, a really neutral, subtle way."

We've been very pleased with the response to our latest compliation release Message From a Subatomic World, and here are a few reviews as well as some less-formal comments about the album.

"Message from a Subatomic World excels at doing what Hypnos does best with their compilations – introducing listeners to a variety of new and established artists in a cohesive album. Austere's "Crystil" is first, and it is a cool ten minute journey into a variety of ambient sounds. At first the music is almost imperceptibly quiet, but soon the soft drones are joined by beautiful wordless vocals that border on operatic in feel. Piano adds to the regal nature that briefly takes over before becoming soft drifting ambience again. Barely intelligible male vocals come later in forceful whispers. Evan Bartholomew's "Sacrosanct" is next, and it does have a touch of the sacred about it – ambient church music perhaps. Bleeps and blips in "Distant Radiance" by Relapxych.0 are juxtaposed against glassy smoothness. Hypnos artist Numina follows with "Nadir Ever Spirals," which swirls about in equal parts lightness and darkness. The entire disc, and this track in particular, has a very relaxed meditative quality. Jason Sloan paints a sonic picture of dark restlessness in "faded.forgotten[trace]." It is eerie and beautiful at the same time, whereas Phaenon's "Quantum Silence" dives down into the depths. Ironically, Stephen Philips "Down Deep" brings us out of the darkness with a comparatively light airy floater. Pure drones fans have to check out Eric Kesner, aka True Colour of Blood. His "Choosing To Remain Blind" is composed entirely on guitar, though its warm ambient tones scarcely resemble one. Svartsinn creates a review for me with the perfectly titled "Cold But Strong." The disc closes with one of the best known names in ambient music, Italy's Oöphoi. Also aptly named, "Icelight" could have formed a bookend with Svartsinn called "Cold But Bright" instead. With not a bad track to be found, this is an essential addition to any true ambient fan's music collection."

"On the 'normal' Hypnos label, a compilation under the banner of 'Message From A Subatomic World', presenting the 2008 state of affairs in ambient land. Just thinking out loud, I seem to recognize only the names of Evan Bartholomew, True Colour Of Blood and Oophoi. I never like reviewing compilations, and certainly not those that don't have a specific thematic approach, but are merely a postcard, the menu of the day, or whatever. And unfortunately this 'Message From A Subatomic World' is such a compilation. I played this frequently over the past few days, especially in the later part of the evening when reading a book, to take of my mind of whatever I heard during the day, or, simply, other events. The ambient music of Hypnos and the ten artists present here is most suitable for such an evening. Its music to relax by, do 'nothing', to dream while being awake. Very nice. But I could I tell who did what? Is there that ultimate stand out piece of music that really makes that splitting difference, the new, spectacular view on ambient music? I'm afraid there is no such thing. That can bother me as a reviewer, not as a listener. Then I can simply enjoy the lush textured music by Austere, Relapxych O, Numina, Jason Sloan, Phaenon, Stephen Philips and Svartsinn."

"...from start to finish, a fantastic album - top selection of artists and music which is quite simply breathtaking. The blend of beauty and bleakness that's sustained throughout the course of the album is spot on and it showcases very nicely just what makes the Hypnos label so special. I read Mike's comment that this album has attracted a lot of interest - rightly so IMO. Ok, so did it live up to my expectations? You bet it did. I love the more spacey feel to this compilation and it definitely isn't a case of Hypnos playing safe and releasing "Sounds of a Universe..." Part II."

"Much beauty on this disk, and a pleasing addition to my Hypnos collection."
--Reviewed by Hypnagogue on the Hypnos Forum

"Like [Sounds of the Universe Overheard], the second half (tracks 6-10) seemed to "kick in" for me more than the first half, for whatever reason. Not to say I didn't like the first five tracks, they are all good. If I had to pick a favorite track, I'd go with Phaenon's "Quantum Silence," will have to investigate this artist further after this for sure. Stephen Philips' "Down Deep" is another standout piece for me. Oophoi's "Ice Light" is a perfect album closer and will not disappoint any Oophoi-fanatics. Well done by all involved. Looking forward to the next comp. of all female artists!"

"For me the purchase was a fait accompli based upon my love of compilation discs (can't beat the variety) as well as Hypnos' (read M. Griffin's) reputation for delivering a great product (packaging, art, sounds, etc.)...there's just something about a Hypnos production that makes me eagerly anticipate the Postman's footsteps. As for the content of disc 2...I'd say possibly more stark...or slightly more somber than "...Overheard". But whatever the description, I've had it on discman for 5 consecutive plays since receiving it last Friday as well as in my car, Saturday, during a 3 hour drive to pick up my kids from Summer camp (had to play their music on the way back, though)."

We have a few new items in the Hypnos Online Store, starting with a few from the Waterscape label. It's worth noting that previous Waterscape releases were limited 3" mini-CDRs, and while some of these new releases are in that format, some are also full-length discs. See the descriptions below for details.

Hakobune - Melting Reminiscence (ltd. 3" mini cdr) (Waterscape category)
(Price: $10.99, ltd 3" mini-cdr)
2008. Melting Reminiscence is a blissful journey into a world of fuzzed out guitar dreams and a good portion of ambient. There are actual 2 pieces on this disc. The first one titled Yukidaruma which is the Japanese word for snowman. A wonderful drift into a piano dominated drone, with an incredibly warm and cozy atmosphere. The second piece entitled \"Melting Reminiscence\" is the longer of both songs. A shoegaze driven guitar drone into cotton clouds of sustain. No need to say anything more except that this is essential for lovers of the ambient guitar drone genre... (more/buy)

2008. Live From The Dry Valley\'s is an almost 19 minute long guitar drone. Starting really slow just to catch your attention while it is building more and more until it reaches the climax which is a wonderful mesmerising layer of guitar tones with tremolo effect on it. In some way this could be compared to Fear Falls Burning, just with the exception, that Apalusa is hiking on the bright and warm side of the mighy guitar drone. Burning A Hole In The Sun is not what you expect, when you read Peter\'s Name. This one is far away from beeing soft and cuddly. We've had some great releases on our Hypnos Secret Sounds sub-label, especially recently, but we thought it would be a good time to highlight some of our earlier releases for those who may have missed them.

So, we're running a two-fold special right now.

Second, we're offering a 10% off coupon on all orders that include at least one HSS release... and the 10% discount applies to ALL the items in your order, not just the required Hypnos Secret Sounds item.

That means you can get an extra 10% off the new lower price on the 8 we just price-reduced, and it also means you can get 10% off the newest ones as well, and better yet, it means you can get 10% off anything else you order at the same time.

We've just received a review of Lena's album Extended Gestures For Cello by Stephen Fruitman for the sonomu.net webzine.

"As an artist new to the recording scene, calling yourself simply "Lena" is certainly one way to make sure you don“t stand out in the crowd. I believe there are already a handful of Lenas on the record store shelves; I myself am currently working on a review of the third album by another Lena, the nom-de-reggae of French-Canadian sound artist Mathias Delplanque.

However much she - and this Lena is indeed a she - hides the light of her personality under a bushel, Lena could not be more forthcoming in calling her album Extended Gestures for Cello. For that is exactly what it is - a whopping seventy minutes delving into cello sonorities. A "gesture" is generally understood as a simple, physical movement meant to convey a rather straightforward thought, and over ten tracks ranging from one to almost fifteen minutes, Lena coaxes many exquisite ideas out of her overgrown fiddle while her husband, ambient stalwart M. Griffin, paints a slightly out of focus background with subtle electronic treatments. I particularly like the sense of enormous indoor space they create on "Crowdmurmurs, Peopletalk".

The longest track "Workings of Silver Fortunetellilng Machines" is a masterpiece of patience, as Lena strokes the cello once with her bow, allows the note to sound, carry, get caught up in the discreet electrical storm surrounding it in space, and diminish before taking another swipe at the instrument. Probably one of the most meticulously created and intellectually enjoyable ambient tracks I“ve heard this year. Not every single one of these "gestures" succeeds, but if Lena continues to carve out a career as ambient cellist, it will be interesting to see where her skill and imagination take her."

We're starting to see some reviews and radio play for Villa Galaxia, the new album by Saul Stokes. We have a couple of more formal or official reviews, and a couple of informal comments taken from the Hypnos Forum.

"Operating at the heart of electronic music, Saul Stokes' work has been primarily an exploration of timbre and the character of sound. On Villa Galaxia (55'45") Stokes does not ditch the experimental ambiance he took so long to develop, but surprises us with eight tightly arranged and focused works. With the path of each piece following imaginative accelerating percussion and charged synthetic rhythms, the energy level of this CD wanders into the realm of more contemporary releases. Yet, with its fascinating arrangement and wealth of original tones and sonic coloration, Villa Galaxia will please the bobbing club hipster as much as the prone head-tripper. In this finely tuned collage of grainy beats, squiggly synths and twisting tones each song bursts with vitality and warmth. An album of its time, spanning and transcending electronica's musical moment, Stokes channels the era of the synthesizer."
--Chuck van Zyl/STAR'S END

"Rhythm plays an important role in the music of Stokes, but as noted with his previous release, 'Vast' (Vital Weekly 519), Stokes is not the man to play click and cut rhythms with some shady ambient sauce. Both the rhythm and the synthesizers are on par with eachother - they are equally important to him. Stokes himself says that is strips 'away any notion of ambient drone or chill out labeling', but I may not entirely agree with him there. This music certainly owes much to the ambient house genre of more than a decade ago, even when his beats are not strictly four to the floor affairs. His beats support the music, and the music support the beats, and his rhythms are more complex than simple dance floor beats, yet nevertheless they are reminiscent that. Not that it really matters - in ambient music (with or without rhythm) there hasn't been much innovation, and it doesn't come through the music of Stokes either. I didn't expect that. This is music that should be valued inside its genre and as such Stokes plays some mighty pleasant pieces music. Music to relax by, while tapping your feet along to it."

"Vapor Trails and, Night Painting especially, for me, are wonderful, wonderful tracks. I love this album. You have a new fan, Saul. Thank you for this great work. Your music is the feeling of scaling to greater heights from deep in a green grassy valley. Open, fresh evening air. Multiple dimensions and possibilities of existence flickering in and out like a great flux in the multiverse. It feels strident. Somehow aware of what the cosmos means. The electrical impulses are all heightened. My amateur attempt at some poetry to describe the emotions it conjures in me. Again, thank you!"

"Can't get enough of this one. Does something weird to time. There are so many sonic surprises tucked away in this. Each listen is like a festival between the ears."

Igneous Flame / Achromus - Flicker (Miscellaneous category)

2008. Flicker is primarily tonal with an under-current of ethereal mystery and depth. Just arrived to the Hypnos Online Store we have a new one from Celer, whose last release on Infraction has been a hot item here lately.

Celer - The Everything and the Nothing (Infraction category)
(Price: $14.99)
2008. Celer is a husband (Will) and wife (Danielle) duo from California that use a variety of strings as the basis for their sound. Cello, viola, violin and the sounds are mixed in with field recordings, choir, live theremin and then tape spliced and re-assembled in varying lengths to create a loop base. Those sounds are then sampled, layered and processed. The result is a shimmering orchestra. Periods of silence between the notes only enhance the sound. Though at times very haunting, it\'s brightly hazy ambient. Initially "Discourses..." was to be 1 full-length CD with a bonus CDR (The Everything and the Nothing) to accompany the first 100 copies. When Celer presented the bonus material, with field recordings mixed in obtained by Danielle over several months in India, the quality of the material was so high that it was suggested and agreed to instead be a concurrent release of two full-length discs. Just arrived to the Hypnos Online Store we have a few recent releases (well, two recent releases and one re-release) by Steve Roach.

Steve Roach - Empetus (2CD collector's edition) (Projekt category)
(Price: $13.99, 2CD)
2008. Re-release of a Roach classic in a 2CD special edition.

"Empetus is full blown sequencer-based music illustrating a further evolution in the visceral side of Roach\'s music. Nine precise pieces that still sound fresh today. A favorite of sequencer music lovers. Released in 1986, this recording of intricately-woven sequencer lines and buzzing synthesizers established Roach as the American answer to the pioneering European electronic masters of the \'70s (Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream). Alternately thrilling and serene (sometimes within the space of the same track), EMPETUS\' waves of energy rest upon labyrinthine patterns of interlocking notes and wildly cascading tonal clusters. Roach varies the moods from piece to piece as well: the bright, piercing electronics of \'\'Seeking\'\' contrast vividly with the starker, sweeping veils of sequenced notes and arcing waves of Empowerment or the turbo-charged synths that rev through Conquest. It\'s all riveting, exciting stuff, and although Roach largely abandoned the style as he moved forward, EMPETUS remains an important, if largely unsung, statement documenting the course of modern American electronic music."

Soft crackling, static and noises fizzle in and out of focus while subtle guitar rises quietly in the distance. William Basinski + Richard Chartier - Untitled 1-3 (William Basinski category)

We're very excited to have the following new release announcement:

Artist: Saul Stokes
Title: Villa Galaxia
Label: Binary/Stokesmusic (hyby0808)

2008. Always one of the most popular artists on the Hypnos and Binary labels through the years, Saul Stokes is also one we've been very proud to "launch" into the ambient/electronica world, going back to Saul's first album which was also the first album on Hypnos, Washed in Mercury in 1997. The first new work by Saul Stokes on Hypnos/Binary since Fields in 2005, this is certainly one of the most anticipated discs we've released in years.

Saul Stokes says: Stokes’ 8th solo album to date, Villa Galaxia is a hyperfusion of sonic exploration seeded in Stokes’ seminary music past, while arcing into a completely new genre defining collection of songs. Stripping away any notion of ambient drone or chill out labeling, Villa Galaxia surfs its own ocean of contemporary electronic music culture with eccentric listenable experimentalism wrapped in catchy lyrical orchestras of electronic fireworks.

Mirko Ruckels, aka recording artist Deepspace, says: "Hello Radar" is a great opening track, featuring wide-eyed crispy keyboard sounds, and a nice moody bassline. I can feel that I'm really going to like this- you know the feeling, when an album taps you on the shoulder and goes, "Are you ready? we are about to become good friends...." It happens far too infrequently don't you think. "Vapor trails" Slightly melancholy second track- with some great outro key washes. yay. "Blaze" is completely different and brings the album to a, dare I use the word, "chilled" place with it's slightly more, well, serious and blue feeling. I really like the big sunny melodies on "Night Painting". Vibrant, primary colours, sweet sounds. Fingerpainting. "Eta Car is a massive Star" sounds like an epic Mario Bros game, full of detail and shimmering pixely effects (I don't know what that means either). Really lovely. This is an excellent album that will attract many listeners. It's full of nooks and crannies and quite delirious. I like! Nay, love! Bravo Saul!

Villa Galaxia could be characterized as a bit of a throwback to an earlier Stokes sound, a bit simplified and less focused on pretty melodics than Saul's more recent work like Fields and Vast. Whether Saul's work is more about the melodies or the rhythms or the ambience, it always retains the the sound & feel of a Saul Stokes album.

We've just received this great review of Steve Brand's Hypnos Secret Sounds debut, Bridge to Nowhere the the White_Line blog that recently reviewed the Sans Serif disc.:

"I first encountered the work of Steve Brand whilst reviewing a VERY small label (it shall remain nameless!) a few years back, and recognised then that he would do better work, given the strength of his vision, and technical ability. Imagine my surprise then, when Hypnos duly presented me with Bridge to Nowhere, a voluminous four tracker of epic proportions, rivalling the work of some of the finest exponents of dark ambience, or dark atmospherica.

Though these pieces are not “dark” in any significant way, they tend towards the “sombre” end of the spectrum. Opening with a deliciously rich and protracted tonal piece, Bridge to Nowhere 1, a heady piece that encapsulates the mood of the whole album, with a lush tonal backdrop, dripping with piano and eerie sepulchral choirs looming out of the ether. Breathing Light blossoms with a swell of muffled organ tones draped in birdsong, this is breathtakingly beautiful, not to say downright melancholic, but strangely reminds me of some of Tangerine Dream’s works, as Brand has a command of restrained melody, pitching complimentary elements against each other to form a glistening compound that sends shivers along the spine..truly wondrous material indeed. Bridge to Nowhere 2 resumes the almost funereal themes perpetuated in the first part, but here, Brand reduces the activity further with a stream of sinuous tones and reverberant chords, overlaid with angelic keyboard swathes, this is a glorious and invigorating bliss-out, that is highly filmic and evocative. Closing piece, Through The Lens of Love glistens and glides along with a stuttering refrain that could be sourced from a sampled xylophone or keyboard, a looped , yet non-linear central theme, with sparkling metallic elements shimmering in and out of focus.

In Steve Brand, Hypnos have truly struck auditory gold, and this memorable collection of pieces that at first impression, I thought would be a standard ambient chill out, have become permanent residents in my current listening collection, as well as being emblazoned upon my memory for a long time to come..first class."

Another new addition for the Hypnos Online Store, this time from an interesting and challenging ambient duo, Celer. Everything coming out on the Infraction label of late has been worth having...

Celer - Discourses of the Withered (Infraction category)
(Price: $14.99)
"Celer is a husband (Will) and wife (Danielle) duo from California that use a variety of strings as the basis for their sound. Cello, viola, violin are mixed in with field recordings, choir, live Theremin and then tape spliced and re-assembled in varying lengths to create a loop base. Those sounds are then sampled, layered and processed. The result is a shimmering orchestra. Periods of silence between the notes only enhance the sound. Though at times very haunting, it\'s brightly hazy ambient."

A new batch of CDs here in Hypnos HQ is being added to the Hypnos Online Store, and we'll draw your focus to the noteworthy items below, starting with the new one from Lustmord.

Lustmord - Other (lustmord category)
(Price: $14.99)
2008. The latest from an artist whose work is always challenging, intense and spooky... Lustmord.

"There's simply no one else out there who can deliver creepiness quite like Lustmord. Testament, Element, Ash and Of Eons all drift, smother and occasionally pulse with a fog birthed directly from the gaping maw of a most corrupt and dismal dream. We hear the knell of hellish bells; manbeasts growl and howl far off in the distance; deep Tibetan long-horns blast rottingly sinister tones; and a multitude of other familiar tricks are conjured and manipulated for nasty purposes through the dark hands of this seemingly joyless man."

We need to clear out some shelf space, due to all the new CDs we've been bringing in, so we have some new price decreases and closeouts we'll be making available, gradually, in the Closeouts section of the Hypnos store.

Available so far, with more coming in the next few days:
Aube - Howling Obsession - price $4.99
Audela - Audela - price $9.99
Maurizio Bianchi and Maor Applebaum - Electrostatic Deflection - price 11.99
Controlled Bleeding - Between Tides - price $4.99
Crawl Unit- vs Silence - price $7.99
Deutsch Nepal - Comprendido...Time Stop! - price $2.99

Usually price reductions like this see people snapping everything up pretty quickly, so if any of the above links returns an error, or a blank product page (no item description or cover or price) that means the item in question is sold out. Like it says above, we'll be adding to this list frequently until we create some room on the shelves.

Here's our latest on Hypnos Secret Sounds, part 2 of our Matt Borghi reissue series (following Huronic Minor a few months back), December Impressions.

Artist: Matt Borghi
Title: December Impressions
Label: Hypnos Secret Sounds (Ltd CDR)

Matt Borghi - December Impressions

2008. We here at Hypnos have long enjoyed Matt Borghi's subtle atmospheric ambient music, and believed it deserved more attention. Many of Matt's CDs are out of print, and we've agreed to re-issue a series of our favorite recordings on the Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint. Simple, restrained, and artful, these recordings deserve to remain in print, and we hope these reissues will help introduce more of today's ambient music listeners to the work of this important artist. Following our release of Huronic Minor a few months back, here we announce the second part of our Borghi reissue series, December Impressions.

Matt says:
December Impressions was conceived, and recorded during the spring of 2001. This is a dark, cold, and steely recording that borders more on tone poem than full LP release. The tracks are named as sequences, representing parts of the same whole, and a cohesive linear listen rather than a variety of separate tracks of the same mood. With this release there was an attempt to represent the cold Michigan winters, or at least the sound of the Michigan landscape during the dark winter m onths. While this recording is truly ambient, and contemplative in nature it's also quite gritty and cold. This doesn't have the warm, lush synth pad chordings that many ambient recordings are known for. Comparisons for this recording are difficult becuase there's not a whole lot out there that sounds like it, but comparisons to Robert Rich, VidnaObmana, Alio Die, and Zoviet France might be appropriate.

*Additional Composer's Note - December Impressions came to be in a weird compositional period. This recording used, as it's source, a handful of pieces composed a few months earlier when I was working on Elegy for Time. Once I developed these guitar pieces I then dabbled with composing for frequencies alone. I focused on using low-end frequencies between 100 and 500hz, and I focused on high-end frequencies from 1Khz - 12Khz. This recording truly embodied the conceptual process of painting with frequencies. I organized the frequencies wholly on how they worked with regard to creating a steely, icy mood of a Michigan December landscape, even though, this work was actually being composed in the early spring. December Impressions eventually turned into a stark, and cold kind of ambient soundtrack. I like the direction that this recording took, but after it's completion I had satisfied my experiments with 'frequency painting'.

Yesterday I posted an update about a just-finalized release upcoming on Hypnos Secret Sounds, and here's another one. It's by BIrds of Tin, an artist we previously only knew about through his collaboration with Rapoon, Monomyth which we've sold through the Hypnos store for a long time. Birds of Tin has also previously collaborated with Augur, the former project of Steve Brand, who recently released his album Bridge to Nowhere on Hypnos Secret Sounds. More information about Birds of Tin is available on his Discogs.com page, and the new album is called Rinpoche.

We will have more information soon about Rinpoche as well as Birds of Tin.

We have a number of new projects being prepared for release soon, and one of them has enough details solidified now that we're ready to show-and-tell finally. It's the first release on Hypnos by Deepspace, an Australian ambient artist, and the album is called The Glittering Domain.

Deepspace is an artist who is new to us here at Hypnos, though he has a number of self-released recordings available. Those of you unfamiliar with him, as we were just a few months ago, can find an introduction in the form of Phil Derby's interview with Deepspace, aka Mirko Ruckels, on Phil's excellent music resource web site ElectroambientSpace at www.electroambientspace.com.

The Glittering Domain will be released on Hypnos Secret Sounds as soon as we can get a few of the other items in the pipeline moved along.

Some new reviews of Fabrications by M. Griffin have been posted to that CD's page here. A bit of text from the latest additions, below:

"A new album from Mike Griffin of Hypnos Records, more than 10 years in the making. Lots of processed field recordings with a drifty ambient sound. I hope we don't have to wait as long for the next one."
--Scott Raymond, WVKR radio

"...These harmonic compositions are ethereal and often elusive. Their flow is evenly crafted with appropriate highs and lows generating an emotional mien. Example: the “Gravity” track, while airy and tenuous, exhibits a distinct sonic pressure that approximates weight. The delicate sensibilities embodied in this music are temperate and soothing, delivering an ambience rich with sedative properties that at the same time produce a subtle psychic invigoration."

Here's the first review we've seen of the new CD Tones for LaMonte by Sans Serif (alter ego of Forrest Fang), from an interesting new blog, White_Line, that we've just discovered:

"I’m constantly blessed with surprise packages that drop through my letter box, particularly from labels whose work I haven’t yet experienced, and whose artists I do not know. Hypnos is one such label, and they had the good grace to send along one or two of their fine releases for my perusal. Sans Serif is the adopted name of one Forrest Fang, a composer whose work here celebrates and emulates the late great La Monte Young. Young’s influence has been expounded my many an ersthwile minimalist composer, and here, Fang indeed does justice to his memory.

With releases and collaborations under his own name, particularly on the recent Gongland album, Fang explores more classical territory. Under the Sans Serif moniker, the work is overtly minimal and long form, combining elements of classicism, with digital composition. On Tones for La Monte, Fang deploys combinations of sustained tones and chords, wispy, evaporations and distillations, charged atmospheres that reduce the formations into pure essence. These are wonderfully executed pieces, not unlike Keith Berry, or Thomas Koner, but with the composer’s own signature, encapsulating the sounds in endless reverb, watercolour splinters, and rich tonal bass. These works are entitled to evoke either Greek numerology, or brain states..Alpha, Omega, Delta..etc..not entirely original, but if relating to brain states, then entirely appropriate, as each piece emerges through translucent planes, revealing as much about the nuances of the instrumentation as about the composers’ intentions. Here, strings are grazed, tones are warm, rich, and resonant, the atmospheres serene and enchanting. Here is a CD that I will almost certainly be re-visiting many times, and I cannot recommend it too highly..fine stuff indeed."

We have been awaiting this CD release for longer than usual, but we finally have CDs available. Such a lot of work went into assembling this one, and we've very pleased, and proud of the result.

CD release announcement from Hypnos Recordings
Various artists
Title: Message From a Subatomic World
Hypnos Recordings (hyp2854)

Various Artists - Message From a Subatomic World (compilation)

2008. Having not released any various-artists compilations in the past decade, Hypnos released in 2007 a new compilation Sounds of a Universe Overheard featuring a diverse array of ambient soundscape artists from around the world. We are proud to follow last year's release with its "mirror image" compilation, which we believe meets or exceeds that high standard.

Here are another 10 exclusive tracks by 10 artists who have not appeared on Hypnos compilations before, though some of these artists will certainly be familiar to followers of our label. Message From a Subatomic World in comparison to its predecessor is perhaps a bit more abstract and deep-space, more mysterious and strange, whereas Sounds of a Universe Overheard is a bit more musical and structured overall.

Austere - This elusive duo has released two albums with Hypnos in the past year, Solyaris on Hypnos and Pulse on Hypnos Secret Sounds. They've also ranged over a wide sonic territory with previous self-released projects during the past decade.

Evan Bartholomew - Perhaps best known for the rhythmic electronica he records as Bluetech, Evan has just recently started releasing ambient work under his own name, and recently launched his own Somnia label.

Relapxych.0 - This Swedish sonic experimentalist previously recorded under the name Objekt4 but has just launched this new project name.

Numina - Certainly familiar to Hypnos listeners, Numina has released 3 great CDs on our label, and he has been one of the great new names in the ambient music world this past 5 years.

Jason Sloan - A partner in the Slo.Bor label with Matt Borghi, Jason creates uncompromising sound art using tools as diverse as electric guitars, synthesizers, and self-designed software algorithms.

Relapxych.0 - is Anders Peterson from Sweden, experimenting with combining field recordings with musical instruments and approaches, creating musical ambience rather than ambient music. Visit www.ghostsounds.net

Stephen Philips - Also familiar to Hypnos listeners, Stephen runs the Dark Duck Records label on which he has many releases under several identities, in addition to his two releases on our label.

True Color of Blood - Alter ego of Eric Kesner, who uses treated and layered electric guitars to craft unique and challenging ambient drone works, which he has released on labels like Gears of Sand, Eibon and Afe.

Svartsinn - This Norwegian dark ambient artist has several prior releases, mostly on the Cyclic Law label, and is a frequent live performer around the world.

Oophoi - No other name has gone from obscurity to such high regard among ambient listeners in such a short time, and this Italian master of the atmospheric drone has been greatly prolific, counting among his releases two projects on Hypnos, Athlit as a solo artist, and Distance to Zero with Paul Vnuk Jr. of Ma Ja Le.

THE TRACKS, with mp3 samples:

These discs were added to the Hypnos Online Store a while ago but we forgot to mention it here. This is a live video DVD -- the kind of thing we don't see often in the ambient music genre. Given how difficult it is to see this kind of music live in most places, this seems like an ideal way for many ambient music fans to get an idea what it looks like to see this kind of music performed live.

The performance and the video itself are quite good -- nice sound and interesting visuals, very professionally done and not at all "home video" in terms of quality. We would recommend this highly as a great example of a live video document of a performance of this type, and we hope other artists release similar videos in the future.

Coming soon, we'll be reissuing Ben Fleury-Steiner's Drifts which was previously released in a limited edition on Ben's own excellent label Gears of Sand. We have a couple of copies of the original edition left and wanted to clear those out so we can proceed with the reissue so we've reduced the price substantially until they're gone... $7.99 now, previously $12.99 (and our re-release will be $11.99), on the Hypnos Online Store.

Ben Fleury-Steiner - Drifts (Gears of Sand category)
(Price: $7.99, ltd cdr)
"Really nice. Reminds me of what I wish Terry Riley were doing today."
-THOM BRENNAN, Raingarden Music

"Though favoring the kind of broad sweeps that only irising analog filters so triumphantly utter, Fleury-Steiner is careful to avoid the kind of artful banality that has stifled the creative impetus of, say, the last decade of Vangelis’ output. Not for “ambiance” only, these sumptuous Drifts are too playfully captivating for casual ingestion."
-DARREN BERGSTEIN e/i #7, winter/spring 2006

"Mastered by ambient guru Robert Rich, Drifts begins with bright crystal tones on “Sundial,” cascading in rapid-fire manner and bringing forth images of Phillip Glass and the like. On “Flicker” the shimmers are gone, replaced by softly pinging synths and a subtle distant background rhythm. It bounces along at a moderate pace at first, then is content to mostly float softly. “Descriptives” gets a bit more into the glitchy quirky nature I’ve come to expect from Fleury-Steiner, little pulses slightly clipped at the ends. Tracks 4 through 7 each have their own name, but are part of a single work called “Dreams.” “Somnium Scipionis” swirls about as a shuffling stuttering bass line moves things along. It fades out quickly, replaced by the glassy smooth sounds of “Veritatis Splendor.” There is a layered effect as one sound fades in, crests, fades out, then is replaced by another, like moving outward in concentric circles and back in again. “The Dust that Lies Between” has little electronic blips and bleeps blended in with the shimmering synths. Toward the end, a cool pulsing sound sweeps in and out. A more breathy pulse begins “Absens in remota,” which reminds me of a passage from Global Communication’s classic album 76:14. Like much of the rest of Drifts, this passage has a metallic quality to the floes of sound. “Cicada” is more rhythmic, with a synthetic cicada sound appearing on occasion. Rhythm is an unusual affair throughout, often hidden in the distant background. “Tensile” is largely formed around a buzzing undercurrent, an edgy bit of electronica. A grungy rough-hewn groove forms the foundation of “Home,” surrounded by more abstract quirkiness that continues to the end. A good variety of all things ambient and electronic to be had here, blended in a unique way rather than just copying those who have gone before."

"The eight small tracks on Phonema Sacrata (53\'17\") by Cymphonic do not stimulate the edges of the listener's ears the way long-form pieces do, but rather they open outward in the mind. This music stimulates every part of the brain, and may provide a bit of reprogramming - it absolutely does inspire abstract thoughts. Swinging wider than most, the work hangs together in a sort of dream-state narrative. A mesmerizing mix of original electronic sounds, recurring evocative themes, dreamy rhythms, grainy samples and unique pacing, Phonema Sacrata is an imagination finding form in music. It is a work inhabiting its own territory. Seeming to deal with the sleeper and his access to other worlds, Cymphonic develops a brilliantly shaped hallucinatory landscape. The transitions between tracks are masterful and the work evokes a strange new place at each turn. This album provides a fascinating ambient encounter. The most challenging part is in returning to the reality the listening experience transports us away from."

False Mirror - Chronostatic Scenes (Blue Oasis/ Dataobscura category)
(Price: $12.99)
Deeply absorbing, and cut through with mystery, these dark landscapes remind me of the visual works of 19th century symbolist painter Arnold Bƶcklin ... in fact, track 4 could be the perfect soundtrack to The Isle of the Dead. A rewarding listen for fans of darker ambient... (more/buy)

Robert Davies - Primordial (Blue Oasis/ Dataobscura category)

Reminiscent of the deep, richly atmospheric, earth-ambient tones of Steve Roach and the dark mysteries of Alio Die, this third release from Robert Davies reveals another side to his artistry. Robert Davies - Garden of Twilight (Blue Oasis/ Dataobscura category)
(Price: $12.99)
"Robert Davies, whose album Sub Rosa landed on my best of 2006 list, turns his minimalist ambient eye on a landscape less melancholic (and melodic) on Garden of Twilight, a worthy follow-up but one that is (for me) more satisfying from an intellectual and aesthetic level than from an emotional one. That comment doesnā€™t mean this is a poor album, however. Davies works in much more subdued and subtle vein than he did on Sub Rosa. For ambientphiles who enjoy drifting minimalism with just a hint of melody among the washes, textures, drones and effects, Garden of Twilight will probably prove to be a garden of Delight."

Kwook - Skywave (Blue Oasis category)
(Price: $12.99)
2008. "At first, it's hard to say why Skywave, the CD by Kwook, sounds so nostalgic. Is it the occasional Mellotron sound? The buzzing lead lines or sweeping synth pads? Or just the overall electronic aura that seems to engulf this album? All of these qualities (as well as a hint of IDM beats) and more make for a captivating release. But it\'s more the positive attitude of this artist that gives his music its nostalgic feel than any riff or melody. Comprised of subtle yet beautifully varied tracks Skywave glows in transfixing simplicity. The piece Sunspots is a standout. With its catchy bassline and melodious flute, it produces an ample amount of momentum and intrigue. A common thread throughout is the insertion of squelchy short-wave radio fragments. These lost communications add the sensation of floating through the ether and are used to great effect in the lengthy title piece, which spans three tracks at the end of the disc. Our friend Kwook believes that sound is a playground. His inventive approach, full of joy and clarity, makes the journey new."

Various Artists - Perceived Distances (Blue Oasis category)
(Price: $12.99)
2008. "Perceived Distances is an anthology CD that represents the Ambient aesthetic of the Blue Oasis label. Works by Saul Stokes and Kwook express the more energetic side of this concern. With ear-friendly melodies and thought-pushing beats their tracks are wonderful jaunts across a diverse digital terrain. Other tracks on this collection exemplify explorations of tone in the broadest sense of the word. Through fascinating variations in timbre and texture music by the likes of The Circular Ruins, Off the Sky and Cymphonic produce a range of moody impressions and time-stretching atmospheres. These artists understand that negative space is much more than merely the area between two positive points. Subtle digital distortion, voices and noises imbue some of these realizations with a kind of environmental feel. In contrast, other tracks are full of air and light, and offer drifting moods at cosmic heights. As a collection, Perceived Distances works very well. It brings together 15 interesting musicians. By provoking the listener to reflection, it works even better as a statement on the genre - proclaiming the power of this music to be greater than the individual."

The Circular Ruins - Falling into the Sky (Blue Oasis category)
(Price: $12.99)
"The Circular Ruins (Anthony Paul Kirby) is exploring a personal realm of assertive, emotional ambient music. A fascinating series of electronic poems that invent a sonic sphere all their own, Falling Into the Sky (64\'11\") attempts to liberate the mind of the listener from its own self-impression. As soundscapes gradually shift and unfold, textures transform and we linger easily within a wondrous soundworld. Synthesizer pads churn behind fluttering atmospherics while further in a digital wind stirs up strange cosmic debris. Narrative runs adrift and the hiss and murmur of distant chords occupy the foreground. Vibrating with energy, Falling Into the Sky inhabits the amorphous area between the earth\'s surface and outer space, and continually reveals itself in revelations revealed in repeat visits."

Lammergeyer - Beneath the Sky (Blue Oasis category)
(Price: $12.99)
2008. "Composed and performed by Anthony Paul Kerby (Canada) Lammergeyer combines a feel for moody, poetic, detailed, and immersive electronic soundscapes with subtle and haunting melodic elements. The overall effect resembles music composed for some imagined film; a film where events are viewed from a bird\'s eye view. This is a sophisticated music; on the one hand a music of mysterious etherial heights, as though riding thermals across wide mountain valleys, rocky chasms, broad estuaries .... and on the other a music of deep intimacy."

Every time we get a new shipment of CDs from the British label Neu Harmony, we suddenly start selling a ton of them. I guess it could have to do with the exchange rate (which makes our price the best in the world for these items), or it could just be that customers of the Hypnos Online Store are hungry for more retro and Berlin school EM. Either way, here are some new items. There are some other restocks available in the store's Neu Harmony category.

Weird - A New Kind of Normal (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $15.99)
"The first thing you hear on this album is a rumbling sequence which leaves you in no doubt that the territory to be explored is decidedly retro. There are Tangerine Dream references but they are mixed in equal part with Klaus Schulze and Ashra influences. The opening track title Klaus to the Edge (!) makes the Schulze reference even more obvious. The guitar when used is very subtle, giving colour rather than dominating as a lead instrument. The sequence provides the backbone but the accompanying atmospherics and effects are just as effective. Some of the sounds used will make you go weak at the knees. We are just six minutes in to this album and I\'m already captivated. Flutey synth introduces Schaltzeit Nachtweit, then a guitar picks out a beautiful gentle melody, sounding a little like Manuel Gottsching. At two minutes another perfectly crafted sequence begins to pulsate with supporting sequences brought in to accompany it. 9VFE10M begins with an exquisite combination of sounds and little melodies but we soon get into the sequences and rhythms. This is like a storm seen from a distance creating havoc as it goes but slowly coming closer and closer. Both power and beauty combined into one. An awesome track. After a short introduction, Tiefenfluss treats us to the most bass laden sequence so far. A brighter sequence starts to build over it and the guitar takes the lead threatening to let rip but never quite being allowed to. Of all the tracks on the album the next one, Manuel Gearchange, hardly surprisingly has the greatest Ashra influence (get it- Manuel Gottsching)? A version of this track was first released on Gold Tri Vol 1 but here we have the La RD Remix. Cosmic twitters give way to optimistic rhythms and restrained almost happy guitar licks, close your eyes and images of the master cosmic guitarist will fill your mind. We now move on to the twenty-six minute title track. Slow pulsations and guitar as well as synth melodies set the scene, bubbling along nicely up to the eleven-minute m ark when strident sequences join in. At thirteen minutes rhythms are added, at fourteen minutes we move into weird territory and dive into an atmospheric pool. The images created from now on are very dark and ominous, whether the pictures are of deep space or dark subterranean landscapes the one constant is a brooding malevolence which is never far away. At twenty-one minutes a deep slow rumbling rhythm pounds out as though the devil himself is marking out time on some vast drum as tortured souls do his bidding. Ausklang follows on in similar dark territory, then a melancholy piano melody makes an appearance, beautiful in its sadness, and takes us to the end."... (more/buy)
Syndromeda - A Day in the Fields (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $15.99)
"Shrill electronics pierce the air, proclaiming dominant attributes drenched with pastoral mien. Sweeping tonalities burble and shimmer, capturing life-giving sunlight in a manner that communicates this vibrancy even in the dark. Nimble-fingered keyboards establish robust melodies that strain to escape the very notes comprising them, bursting forth to generate fresh tunes radiant with bigger-than-life connotations. Prodigious rhythms are present too, lifting the music to dizzying altitudes. The percussion describes mammoth tempos that tremble the ground underfoot. Even when exploring such harsh sonic terrain, though, a tender majesty is zestfully evoked. One track utilizes an array of orchestral instruments (albeit synthetically produced). Magnificent horns and sultry violins blend with regal electronics and heavenly textures, conjuring an alluvial state that defies time and space with its enduring qualities. The sinuous union of these enormous elements is a superb thrill to behold, conveying the listener to a garden of divine scale where each glistening leaf pulsates with wonder and astounding harmony. As the music progresses, one\'s focus grows larger, expanding to discern greater configurations and embrace the ageless splendor that surrounds us."
- -Sonic Curiosity, soniccuriosity.com... (more/buy)
Jiannis - Plugged (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $15.99)
"Plugged is a Berlin School, analogue, sequential masterpiece. The shortest track is eighteen minutes so things are really given plenty of room to develop and mutate creating pure aural heaven. \'Erstes Schattenspiel\' (catchy title) begins with lonesome synth sounds and vocoded speech in the manner of \'Chromium Echoes\'. Don\'t worry these vocals are used more as a sound, not singing. As soon as the opening sequence takes its first tentative steps low in the mix, fitting perfectly to the washes of synth, you just know that you are in for something VERY special. The sequence beefs itself up and is accompanied by another sequence of a more ballsy variety. The lead line is a real stunner and sends the spine a tingling rather than screeching through the cranium, just right. It is constantly changing and being put through all manner of effects and I was hypnotized by it. Things calm down a bit at the eighteen minute mark (can\'t believe the track has been running that long already) but builds up again shortly afterwards over sequential themes that keep the feel of before but are combined differently. The lead line when it returns is even more effective than before and with even greater variation, the sequences adjusting perfectly. The second track Zweites Schattenspiel (another cracking title) starts with a noise half way between the wind blowing across an alien landscape and a space ship coming in to land. We then get sequences similar to early Jean Michel Jarre (Oxygene / Magnetic Fields) which initially are rather laid back and to which a more typical Berlin School sequence is added. The lead lines are straight from 1975 / 76. The final track Drittes Schattenspiel starts with more haunting winds before massed chords add to the melancholy feeling and a lonesome lead plays over the top. Seven minutes in a bubbling sequence is added and the lead dies away. This sequence builds and a different lead comes to the surface. Just as we are getting used to this groove a rhythm fades in then drifts low er into the mix. The sequences, lead lines rhythms mutate all the time creating an ever evolving brew. At the twenty minute mark all but the main sequence and the drones die away but after only a short while all the main elements are introduced again one by one with the addition of a second rhythm. The track then fades gently away."... (more/buy)

As mentioned in the last update, we're in a new partnership with the AtmoWorks label to create CDR versions of their digital download releases, and a new one is available now on the Hypnos Online Store. This is by Steve Brand, who recently released Bridge to Nowhere on Hypnos Secret Sounds (see June 12 update below).

Steve Brand - SoulSpiral (Atmoworks category)
(Price: $12.99)
2008. AtmoWorks is proud to release SoulSpiral by Steve Brand!

Steve wrote about the album on his blog in the AtmoWorks community and he describes the album in a wonderfully personal way...
"SoulSpiral" represents a new phase of work for me, in which I felt the desire to explore the creation of longer, more dense zones which unfold slowly over longer periods of time, as opposed to shorter "songs." The album consists of 2 long tracks, each timing in at over 30 minutes. The first track, "SoulSpiral," is dense mass of ever-shifting drift formed from layers of keyboard, voice and didg textures. Zones change, overlap, shift gradually, letting in more light, then obscuring, designed to take the listener deeper and deeper. The second track, "Worldmaker," begins with a clarion call of deep Tibetan horns. There is a more terrestrial feel here than with the previous. Kora, bells, voice, drums and more densely layered whistling, droning, thunderous textures reach out from the depths of distant timelines. While the first track initiates the journey, "Worldmaker" brings the listener to the other side, into dimly lit worlds, other possible universes, other possible selves.

"SoulSpiral" was in part, inspired by the stream of stunning photos from Hubbell and NASA of worlds taking shape, and by channeled writings that I've been immersed in over the past few years by Jane Roberts/Seth, Lee Carrol/Kryon, Geoffrey Hoppe/Tobias, Barbara Marciniak, Pamela Kribbe/Jesuha and JZ Knight/Ramtha; these books address the expansiveness of consciousness in and around us, and our true creative nature as Human Beings, as opposed to the more limited and limiting one sold to us by organizations, popular culture and advertising.

Jonathan Hughes - Circumflex (Atmoworks category)
(Price: $12.99)
2008. Jonathan Hughes' debut album for AtmoWorks.

In Jonathan's words from the liner notes: "I'm a big fan of words in general, but specifically of words that evoke a certain feeling or image, but mean something completely unrelated. I\'m also a fan of the minutiae that makes up the language of various industries. The titles for all the tracks on Circumflex are typographical terms. To me, these particular words sound like they\'d be equally at home in a document from NASA as they would in a book about graphic design. I wish I could say that the titles had some deep connection to the music, but nope -- they just sounded cool."

Jonathan has previously released acclaimed albums on The Foundry label including Trillium and the virtual collaboration project, Fluidities, where each track on cd1 could be played randomly with tracks from cd2.

We've just received the first "official" review of Steve Brand's release, Bridge to Nowhere. Thanks to Bert Strolenberg of www.sonicimmersion.org for the review.

Steve Brand - Bridge to Nowhere

"Steve Brand is an US-based musician who previously released music in the experimental genre using the name Augur. Brand considers music not only a way of looking inward and expressing one’s self, but a way of reaching out to others and ultimately expanding the boundaries of the world individually and collectively .

On the spacious sounding “Bridge to Nowhere”, the accessible ambient music carries strong ritualistic elements with tribal influences. Part one of the title track with thunderous undercurrents nicely takes off with extended wordless vocals, uplifting, space textures, occasional piano and flute sounds surrounding it. The following three tracks, all clocking at 20 minutes, extend the hypnotic, dreamy state, as free form soundscapes, moody piano, nature sounds meander forth in calming, soothing realms, without getting superficial or new age for one moment.

This is quality ambient music with minimal elements that will be loved by fans of Temps Perdu, Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Mathias Grassow and alike."

Time for another new release from Hypnos. We're very pleased to be involved in releasing new work by Forrest Fang, even if this is an experimental side-project of Forrest's, released under another name.

Artist: Sans Serif
Title: Tones for LaMonte
Label: Hypnos Secret Sounds (Ltd CDR)

Sans Serif - Tones for LaMonte

2008. Sans Serif is an alter ego of Forrest Fang, the talented multi-instrumentalist and composer whose most recent solo album Gongland was released on Projekt in 2000. He has also collaborated with Carl Weingarten on the album Invisibility released on The Foundry, as well as contributing instrumentally to the works of other artists such as Robert Rich.

Unlike the more traditionally structured and "musical" work Fang releases under his own name, the Sans Serif project is focused on minimalism. This project in particular is a tribute to the influential minimalist composer LaMonte Young, whose work was known for the use of long, sustained tones and alternate tunings.

Tones for LaMonte bridges the two, related worlds of avant-garde classical influence, and modern ambient drone.

2008. Like a Slow River is a work characterized by sharp and minimal atmospheres, but also dark, cold and huge, such as big bodies of ice which slowly move, carried by an endless river. The five compositions of Like a Slow River reach the high expectations of the previous works, such as Cold Summer, Continue and the Murder Ballads trilogy with Martin Bates. With no doubt, this is the coldest and darkest work ever composed by this pioneer of industrial-ambient music. Just added to the Hypnos Online Store, the latest from Hypnos Secret Sounds, and the first work on our label by Steve Brand.

Steve Brand - Bridge to Nowhere

2008. Steve Brand has just recently started releasing music under his own name, after more than 20 releases in the experimental realm under the name "Augur." Now Brand has a number of recordings scheduled for release on Hypnos, and also on the AtmoWorks label, and the first of these is Bridge to Nowhere.

Brand's work has always had a ritualistic element, and sound sources include: medicine drum, udu, rattles, various flutes, bells, conch shell, thumb piano, cora, Indian fiddle, found, natural and handmade objects, voice, field recordings and keyboards. Bridge to Nowhere is a spacious, slow-breathing exploration of a meditative state, and nowhere in Brand's work is the ritualistic element more present than in this case.

Ambient music in general is often considered to be "spacy" or conducive to altered states of consciousness in general, but this music specifically seems exploratory, meditative, and even a bit "druggy" and strange. As fans of this music ourselves, we particularly love it when an artist seems genuinely to have tapped into a reality outside our own -- to have slowed down the world or distorted it, or viewed things through a prism or kaleidoscope. The work of Steve Brand functions in this way, and we're pleased to be able to deliver this incredible, no-side-effects sound trip, to Hypnos listeners!

Milieu - A Warm Wooden Hollow (Infraction category)

2008. Reviewed on forcedexposure.com
"It's appropriate to consider A Warm Wooden Hollow to be the counterpoint to Beyond the Sea... Song titles are a bit darker, the feel of the music is evening dusk heading into night rather than a bright hopeful light. The soundtrack for a lonely weary traveler. It's the music of sitting next to the fire on a one man island -- strings strummed and carried out to the sea, drones in the distance. A piano played in slow motion -- a sonata for underwater listening. Released in an edition of 300 copies in a digipak."

Hypnos Forum member comments...

"This one was worth the wait. One of the most truly "ambient" recordings Hypnos has released, great listening for headphone-nauts. I've heard the third solo album will be coming out in 2018, so everybody should have lots of time to wrap their ears around these gorgeous micro-worlds of sound."

"Very dense spooky concrete atmospheres that remind me in places of mid-period Zoviet France, but without the emphasis on looping. Some industrial-like abstract sounds midway through, but nothing Merzbow harsh. Very nicely done."

When we moved our web site from one server to another, it seems we "left behind" a number of mp3 sample clips for some of our CDs. We know how important these sound clips are, if you're considering buying a CD... what better way to decide if it's something you might enjoy, than to actually hear a minute or so from each track?

So, we're in the process of re-creating the sound clips for the albums that are missing the mp3s, a few at a time. To give you even more incentive to give these a listen, we're also temporarily dropping the price on these, as the new clips are added, so you'll save $2 on each of these albums for the next week or so, until we post another set of mp3 clips for other albums, and and knock those prices down $2 temporarily.

The first four items include:

Hypnos is pleased to announce the latest by Jeff Pearce, The Light Beyond. His followup to the beloved & highly-acclaimed 2000 album To the Shores of Heaven, The Light Beyond shares its predecessor's basis of smooth, guitar-based atmospheric clouds, both dark and light. But The Light Beyond explores more abstract, open- ended and free-form compositions, with one track almost forty-four minutes in duration, in the midst of three shorter pieces.

Vir Unis & Saul Stokes - Thermal Transfer

The third Binary release, first ever collaboration between Vir Unis and Stokes, Thermal Transfer is also the most uptempo, high energy recording yet released by Hypnos or its related labels. In fact, truth be told, this recording is the very reason that the Binary label was created -- so Hypnos could bring you excellent electronic music, even if the style in question was too "hyperactive" for the Hypnos label. The mp3 clip samples below should give you some idea why we're as excited about Thermal Transfer as anything we've ever released.

Oöphoi - Athlit

The US debut of Italian drone-ambient artist Oöphoi. He previously released some well-received works on the Amplexus label, both solo and with Tau Ceti (who also contributes here). Many Hypnos listeners have asked for more deep, slow-moving ambient drone material, and if that style is your cup of tea, you'll love this one. It's just short of 74 minutes, one massive continuous ambience (though with four "index" points so you can navigate the CD more easily). There's space music and then there's DEEP space music, and this one is deep, deep, deep. Put on the headphones and drift....

Hypnos artists Stephen Philips and Numina recently recorded a "live in studio" session at Numina's home studio, and it's being featured on Kite Radio on stillstream.com (that's an online, streaming radio service in case you hadn't heard of Stillstream before). Here's their announcement:

3 June 2008

Happy June! Yea Summer! :)

Some of you may know that I was out in Denver, CO a few weeks ago and hooked up with my good friend Jesse Sola (Numina) for an amazing 4 hour live improvised jam session. We recorded most of it (about 3 hours) and plan to release some of the material via 2 CD releases. One will come out on DDR in the next few weeks and the other we're not sure about yet, but are guessing it will be sometime later this year.

Tonight on Kite Radio (http://www.stillstream.com) I will be debuting the CD and playing some of the material from CD 1. This is all new, very cool music you have never heard before.

The show starts around 10:00 pm EDT and I'll be playing the new collab tracks starting sometime in Hour #2.

And while you're listening, why not join the chatroom, just go to stillstream.com and follow the links to the chat.
See ya tonight

It's been a long time since we've added any new items to the "Used & Last Copy" section of the Hypnos Online Store, but we're in the process of adding a lot of new items. Some of them are CDs from our personal collection that we don't listen to any longer, some are old office-play copies that we don't want, others are items we took in trade and just didn't play often enough to keep. We're swimming in extra CDs so we've got to start selling off some of this stuff, and plenty of these are out of print or otherwise hard to fine.

Newest items are toward the bottom of the page.

Here we have a batch of items newly added to the Hypnos Online Store, or in some cases just reactivated after getting them back in stock... all from the wonderful Infraction label.

Aidan Baker & Ultra Milkmaids - At Home With... (Infraction category)
(Price: $12.99)
Canadian Aidan Baker\'s pastoral guitar work shredded to glorious bits by the French. Environmental recordings paint the background with various voices and distant church bells.... (more/buy)
Colin Potter - See (Infraction category)
(Price: $12.99)
2nd edition. Limited to 200 numbered copies.... (more/buy)
Adam Pacione - From Stills to Motion (Infraction category)
(Price: $13.99)
2007. Packaged in a mini-lp gatefold style sleeve with an inner booklet of photographs and video stills by Adam Pacione. Highly anticipated new release from Adam Pacione. Deluxe packaging. Stoughton style mini-gatefold with 16 page full-color booklet. Design and layout by Pacione. An age of virtual audio saturation, of pre-articulated sound. Expressivity, once an array of possible voices, is ever more probabilized. Originality, once primary criterion, is cast from the platform, problematized. Wondering, late in modernity's day, what does it take to make a noise that matters? A keen-eared recontextualizer, an alchemist who can make sound, found or unfound, to walk its own way, outside the ready-made parade. Adam Pacione is one such - new recruit to a group of like-minded musicians, kindred-spirits Brian Grainger (Milieu), Mike Bennett (Zimiamvian Night), and Kiln, who have brought the ferment from their sound stills to the Infraction table. That label is now streaming a vital strain of New Backwoods Ambient, this latest from deep in the heart of (Hurst) Texas -- experimental, but harmonically-inclined, apparently lo-tech, but substantially audio-cratic.(A.Lockett)... (more/buy)
Northern - Drawn (Infraction category)
(Price: $13.99)
2007. Debut release from Canada\'s Northern. Northern is all about clean digital samples and warm tones. northern is all about lovely guitar meanderings and skittering textures. Perhaps it is the frozen nature of Canada\'s landscape or the endearing dismay of the season\'s discontent that has transformed us. Winter reminds us all of polaroid pictures and places that exist only in dreams.... (more/buy)

We've held off on announcing this officially, given the recent problems on the Hypnos Online Store... but everything is fixed now and this CD is ready to order. It's been a very long time coming!

Artist: M. Griffin
Title: Fabrications
Label: Hypnos Recordings

2008. Originally announced in 1997 as the follow-up by Hypnos founder Mike Griffin to his debut Sudden Dark, Fabrications has been reworked, abandoned, restarted from scratch, back-burnered, reimagined, and left frozen in carbonite. Among those who have followed Hypnos from the beginning, Fabrications achieved a certain notoriety as the album always promised for release in the coming year, which never quite arrived. 2008 is finally the year in which Fabrications is revealed, perhaps appropriate for the 10-year anniversary of its original planned release date, 1998.

Generally known as an ambient minimalist, utilizing synthesizers for most of his work, this time M. Griffin took advantage of "real world" sounds, captured with binaural microphones using a portable digital audio recorder. For this release, Griffin built up collages of numerous location recording elements, including cars driving on freeways, people walking in long echoing hallways, the ocean waves in Kona at night, a metalworking factory with heavy machinery crunching away, distant trains, and clothes driers. These elements were manipulated, combined, worked-on and re-worked, and overlaid with looped spoken elements later created by Griffin in the studio. The end result comes out something like the Zoviet France soundtrack to a David Lynch film, that is, a dark and dream-like collage of loops, spoken fragments, disembodied whispers, and the echo of far-off machinery.

While ambient music recordings generally only include a few "layers," Fabrications has been painstakingly built-up over the years so that all tracks are now comprised of dozens of layers, in some cases upward of 100. The result is incredibly complex, with ghostly remnants of real, concrete sounds filtered one against another. Aural signatures of many real places combine to form sonic impressions of a series of locations that do not really exist. These imagined, artificial locales are in effect, fabrications.

We've really enjoyed the recent releases of Evan Bartholomew's excellent new Somnia label, and have just added the 4th such release to the Hypnos Online Store. We're sorry it's taken so long, but we've just heard from the technical support guys who have been working on the Hypnos Online Store for the last few days, that the problems have been resolved. Our sincere apologies to our customers who had trouble ordering during this period.

The good news is, we have a bunch of new stuff to add to the store and announce soon... like tomorrow!

We've been having intermittent trouble with the Hypnos Online Store today and while we troubleshoot the database errors, it may be necessary for us to take the store "offline" for brief periods. Thanks for your patience while we hunt down the cause of these error messages. If you do feel like trying to order, and find the store up & running, we've found that generally orders do go through just fine, despite the error messages, and security is still intact.

2008.05.20 (later)

Always one of the most popular artists on the Hypnos and Binary labels through the years, Saul Stokes is also one we've been very proud to "launch" into the ambient/electronica world.

His latest album, Villa Galaxia, will be released cooperatively by Binary and Saul's own imprint Stokesmusic, in mid 2008.

We're very excited about this release, so we wanted to post a "teaser" announcement here even before all the details were available! Stay tuned.

Just when our last batch of web site and email problems were behind us, we're back to intermittent web access and completely dead email. At this time, the main hypnos.com web site is functioning, along with the Hypnos Forum and the Hypnos Online Store. We're looking forward to getting things back to normal as soon as possible, and we apologize to everyone for the inconvenience.

Here's another new CD release, and another Hypnos Secret Sounds artist debut, this time Bathys by Darkened Soul.

Artist: Darkened Soul
Title: Bathys
Label: Hypnos Secret Sounds (Ltd CDR)

Darkened Soul - Bathys

2008. Hypnos is pleased to announce Bathys, the first appearance on our label (in this case, our Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint) by Darkened Soul. The word "bathys" in Greek translates as "deep," and the rest of the titles here continue the Greek language theme. It's the root of the word "bathyscaph" which is a submersible vessel for deep sea exploration.

"Deep" is relevant here, as this recording collects resonant dark ambient sounds into aural mixtures deep and spacious. This aural journey is evocative of a subterranean trek through wet, metal-walled tunnels, with gritty textures underfoot, and dripping sounds of water. Vague hints of machine-like sounds can be heard churning away in the distance. Bathys by Darkened Soul is an exercise in resonant dark ambient textures.

Darkened Soul is a psydonym under which Mike Soucy records dark ambient soundscapes. His previous releases have been mostly self-released, though Hypnos followers may have seen his release Seasons of Dark and Light on Umbra, the Italian label operated by recording artist Oophoi.

Here are the latest releases, just added to the Hypnos Online Store, from the wonderful new German label Waterscape, which specializes in extremely limited 3" mini CDs of guitar ambience and other guitar-based experimental sounds.

All these items come highly recommended, and supplies are very limited. Please note that these CDs are short in duration, usually just over 20 minutes long.

Jason Sloan - Static (Waterscape category)
(Price: $13.99)
2008. "STATIC is a 22 min piece that is divided into two movements. The first is comprised of mostly organ sounds with a small amount of guitar, and the second is guitar only, which builds eventually into a wall of pure sound. One may be heavily reminded of Steve Roach\'s approach to space music. Highly recommended for space music fans and fans of shoegaze."
- Waterscape Records... (more/buy)
True Colour of Blood - The Cave of Knowlege (Waterscape category)
(Price: $13.99)
2008. "Eric Kesner is the man behind True Colour of Blood. The Cave of Knowledge is a 22 min drone. Kestner perfectly combines dark ambient moments with minutes of pure clarity. Like most of the Waterscape releases this is a pure blessing for headphone trips into a world of shimmering guitar drones and ambient soundscapes."
- Waterscape Records... (more/buy)
Taiga Remains - Descend from Ivory Cliffs (Waterscape category)
(Price: $13.99)
2008. \"Taiga Remains is Alex Cobb, who is also the man behind the Students of Decay Label in America. Descend from Ivory Cliffs is an almost 23 min drone-epic that mixes some of the most beautiful melodies your ear has ever listened to."
- Waterscape Records... (more/buy)

Another sure-to-please item added to the Hypnos Online Store from the always-popular Oophoi.

Oophoi - An Aerial View (Glacial Movements category)
(Price: $15.99)
2008, latest release from the fantastic new label Glacial Movement. Oophoi says: "When I've been asked to describe the Ice Age with an uninterrupted drone, I knew I wanted to avoid the cliches of the genre: dark rumblings, massive low frequencies, cold atmospheres. I had to describe with sounds the white landscape, the blinding light reflected by the frozen oceans, the abyssal silence.I have imagined myself in flight over this Sleeping Earth, a solitary winged-being surrounded by winds, air, water and ice. This led me to compose an airy drone with minimal variations and delicate tones, an homage to a pure, uncontaminated and remote land."... (more/buy)

Also on the subject of Oophoi, it's been rumored that a large number of his Umbra & Penumbra label releases will be allowed to go out of print fairly soon, so we are stocking up to make sure we're able to offer as many of them as possible, for as long as possible. Those of you who are collectors of the wonderful output of this related pair of labels (for those who don't know, Umbra is the imprint for full-length albums and Penumbra is for shorter, EP-length discs) may wish to consider grabbing up the items you're interested in, before it's too late. And to head of any questions in advance, this applies to Umbra & Penumbra label items only, not Oophoi releases on other labels such as Hypnos or Faria or Nextera.

We've been BUSYBUSYBUSY here adding new items to the Hypnos Online Store. This time it's a series of new releases on the Faria label.

Troum - Objectlessness (Faria category)
(Price: $13.99)
2007. "There is a big gap between rational, verbal language and the pre-symbolic language of our emotional and unconscious mind. Music is perceived partly with our conscious mind, who can analyze it and reflect on it. On another part, it is perceived by our unconsciousness, by our primal consciousness that lies under the rational mind. The idea: Experimental music, especially that of a more droning character, can easier get in touch or be unconsciously connected with this primal state of mind. It is music that is linked with unconscious fantasies coming from a pre-verbal sphere of existence... the phase of life based on the dyadic interaction with the primal object, the mother. At this early stage, thereā€™s no awareness existing of being a full separated Subject, and no other full separated Objects can be perceived. Inner and outer reality is the same. Spheric, droning, dissolving music is pointing unconsciously at this objectless sphere of existence. This release is dedicated to the idea of an especially formed pre-symbolic music. Artwork conception contain 4 cards and cover with art from english creator Pete Burn." - Faria Records... (more/buy)
Calabi-Yau - Compactified (Faria category)
(Price: $13.99)
2008. "Calabi-Yau (called in the names of two mathematicians (Eugenio Calabi) and (Shing-Tung Yau )) spaces may be that microscopic shape, deep inside the hidden dimensions of string theory. There are many such spaces... According to string theory, space-time isn't 4-dimensional as you might expect, but 10-dimensional. Where are the extra six dimensions? One answer is that they're compactified: roughly speaking, rolled up into such a small space as to be unobservable at human scales. You are in the forest, it is night, and in a moment you are in space, exploring the phenomena, for which there is no explanation and knowledge in our day... ¦And You hear the sound of loquacious water far away from You. The sky is in front of Youā€¦You can observe all the planets to be clearly. And there are plenty of animals around You, which You've never seen before, which are so close, that they are almost touching You. Thought is equal to movement, there is no difference between them." -Faria Records... (more/buy)
Aglaia - Unprofaned Twilight (Faria category)
(Price: $13.99)
2008. "This is joint edition of Faria Records and Hic Sunt Leones. The fourth cd of Aglaia is born from the previous work but, in comparison with them, it develops a wider breath directly from the backgroundā€™s sounds. The composition is softer and more refined. Again the sonorous world that here is explored is that one of the enchantment, of the mild sound fading. An unprofaned and inviolate twilight, where the different vibrations are balanced, without any sort of tensions. Time rolls by and space too. The sound is a natural matter and gives birth to an intense crepuscolar light. Listening to this music is like to see thousands of fine luminous rays, filtered through half-closed windows. A dance of dust in a never ending movement that catches the light around. With aglaia's sound we are in an electroacoustic microcosm full of vibrating signs. The first of the two long compositions suggests a natural and quiet landscape. The sound's mood is a sort of perpetual tinkling, wrapped up a voice coming from the space, that observes from afar. An harmonic accordance between different reality. The second, even though more intimate, is equally shining. Everything happens during a night where insects, spring-waters and moonlight match themselves together. A swarming midnight with underworld life." -Faria Records... (more/buy)
Antonio Testa - Inframundis (Faria category)
(Price: $13.99)
2007. "Inframundis (inland universe, latin) is a research of stalagmites and stalagtites sounds mixed with textures and drones; It's a meditative record and it creates a balance between biosphere and technosphere. The cd gets free all its energies, its little/big sounds, its hidden atmospheres, and microharmonies. The sounds, music, make us come back to the past, offering us the view of a World. The sound evokes angelical moments between the imperceptible evolution of the sound of the sky and the ethnic roots, natural instrumental sounds creating atmospheres which evoke in our imaginary visions and images of the most far places. It is an alchemic project of ancestral sounds. Deeply rooted in our unconscious." -Faria Records... (more/buy)
Faryus - Lucid Dreams (Faria category)
(Price: $13.99)
2007. "This album is devoted to a phenomenon of the Lucid dreams. A "lucid dream" is a dream, in which the person is aware that he or she is dreaming while the dream is in progress. During lucid dreams you have control over the dream characters and environment, as well as the ability to perform otherwise physically impossible feats. The feelings which you feel during lucid dreams are very similar to those available during a waking state. Often they surpass the \'usual\' with a saturation and intensity. This phenomenon has been researched by such well-known researchers as Stephen LaBerge, Robert Monroe, Carlos Castaneda, etc.. The 9th book of Carlos Castaneda - The Art of Dreaming explains more fully the events occurring within this album. The album is conceived as travel from the moment of falling asleep up to the depths of the infinite universe of the Dreaming: ā€œVivid Dreamā€ - this is a dream, where colors and events are extremely bright. After awakening we never forget these dreams, it remains in the memory as a very exciting experience. It is the first phase of lucid dreaming and the beginning of our travel. We can then find Clarity, passing through the first gate of dreaming to enjoy the Lucid Dream. Opening infinite opportunities of the universe of dreaming we begin our "Free Flying" obtaining the sanctum sanctorum of the dreaming universe - to the World of Inorganic Beings". -Faria Records... (more/buy)
Vadim Bondarenko - Smoking Music (Faria category)
(Price: $13.99)
"Smoking Music was created in 2000-2004. Delicate made melodic ambient compositions. To creatŠµ this album Vadim used keyboards, clarinet, samples and piano. It is a good listening for everyone who likes misty ambient music and the creative work of Brian Eno or Harold Budd." -Faria Records... (more/buy)

Ambient artist A Produce is a long-time friend of the Hypnos label, and released his newest album Smile on the Void on our label, in addition to the A Produce & M Griffin album Altara just before that. One of the earliest A Produce recordings has finally been released on CD, and we have it available for sale now on the Hypnos Online Store.

A Produce - The Clearing (A Produce category)
(Price: $13.99)
2008. Reissue of an early A Produce project, never before released on CD and somewhat of a departure from his later work. Trance Port is proud to release the final A Produce re-issue of his first album (1988), "The Clearing."

"The Clearing" was originally released in 1988 in an edition of 500 LP’s. At the time, AP considered it “an album of conceptual space.” It was also very much a transitional album, AP having gone from playing guitar in the “dark dance band” Afterimage in the early 80’s to where he was headed musically and creatively in the 90’s on up to the present. The notion of the Trance Port label also evolved in the early 80’s, first as a cassette releasing label of what was evolving as the “L.A. underground” music scene. Many of the artists AP met during that time appeared on the two "L.A. Mantra" compilations issued on Trance Port during those years. Many also appeared on the tracks of "The Clearing" project. AP is thankful for those artists’ varied contributions on this album. It would not have turned out as well and as interesting a project without them. After release of "The Clearing" LP, A Produce began to drift into more space/ambient realms. Some of "The Clearing’s" original tracks have appeared on later compilations of my work. This is the first time the entire album has been rejoined as the whole it originally came from. An added “lost” track has been included on this CD release to complete the experience. For this release, all track tracks have been remastered by Loren Nerell and AP... (more/buy)

This weekend we have another batch of featured items on Hypnos Online Store, this time from the Neu Harmony label.

Syndromeda - Metaphysical Experiences (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
2005. "Some artists provide their best work earlier in their career but Syndromeda just gets better and better." ----Reviewed by DL at Synth Music Direct... (more/buy)
Otarion - Faces of the Night (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
2004. "The album takes us through a restless, dream filled night. We begin 'Nightfall' with eerie metallic shimmers, deep bass rumbles and haunting but also quite ethereal wordless vocal touches. It\'s an extremely impressive start, out of which rhythms and simply stunning melodies emerge. Beauty and power are mixed together in the perfect combination. Every track here is perfection, there is no weak link. It is one of my favorite CDs ever; truly a pleasure to review and goes without saying that I think it is an essential purchase.\" --Reviewed by DL at Synth Music Direct... (more/buy)
Under the Dome - Bellerophon (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
2002. "This is a stunning album. It contains those trademark UTD style sequences as found on their first but it also shows a great deal of maturity, light and shade if you like. Equal attention is paid to the atmospheres and textures which balance the stormers. It also comes over as something of a concept album, right down to the early sci fi imagery of the artwork (think of Forbidden Planet). To get the most out of this album when you first get it keep it on constant rotation, playing it time after time- if your woofers are up to it that is. There is greater depth to the sound here than I have ever heard before.\" --Reviewed by DL at Synth Music Direct... (more/buy)
Under the Dome - Wot No Colin? (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
2003. "This is one hell of a powerful CD! It combines tracks from both the Hampshire Jam 2 and National Space Center performances, played completely live without any pre-recorded backing. There are two new numbers plus the sequencer-dominated tracks from \'The Demon Haunted World\' and \'Bellerophon\', most of the pieces running into each other without a break. Indeed it is a sequencer fest to end all sequencer fests! If you are a fan of retro sequencer music, this CD is absolutely essential. If you haven\'t tried Under The Dome before, this is an excellent place to start.\" --Reviewed by DL at Synth Music Direct... (more/buy)
The Omega Syndicate - Analogue Waves (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
2004. "There is Berlin School, then there is Hardcore Berlin School, and then there is this! Xan and Dave Gurr, the guys behind he Omega Syndicate, really don\'t seem to care what some people might think. They like sequencers of the good old-fashioned style, subtle as a brick and don\'t see why you shouldn\'t crank them up, (and up and up)! Why should there be a limit to the number of sequencer lines you can have anyway? They let rip and just keep going. I mean, there are three tracks here averaging over twenty-five minutes each, one over half an hour with hardly a moment to catch breath. The sounds they choose are all so mid to late seventies, but of denser proportions than I have heard from anything actually coming out of that period. These guys are having enormous fun doing what they love doing, and this fun is infectious. It certainly left a smile on my face throughout the entire album.\" --Reviewed by DL from Synth Music Direct... (more/buy)
Syndromeda - Creatures from the Inner (Neu Harmony category)

We're proud to announce our latest release on the Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint, Huronic Minor by Matt Borghi.

Artist: Matt Borghi
Title: Huronic Minor
Label: Hypnos Secret Sounds (Ltd CDR)

Matt Borghi - Huronic Minor

The first of these Matt Borghi reissues will be Huronic Minor.

Simple, restrained, and artful, these recordings deserve to remain in print, and we hope these reissues will help introduce more of today's ambient music listeners to the work of this important artist.

Track listing (with MP3 sample clips):
1. Leaving the Gates of the Open Harbor
2. November's Peculiar Calm
3. Gray Dawn Illumination
4. Point Aux Barques
5. The Longest Night
6. Red Sky Morning
7. Brooding Dark Waters
8. Distant Harbor
9. Silent Moor

"...drifting ambient music par excellence. Matt's forte is similar to that of Stephen Philips' - the ability to meld subtle synthesizer shadings and drones into mesmerizing cloud-like tone poems. I never got bored with this CD, although if a non-ambient fan would listen to it, he or she might think the sound was monotonous. But that is true ambient music¹s appeal. A startling shift of abrupt change calls attention to the music, thereby making it "non-ambient." Huronic Minor is that rarest of ambient releases, i.e. a joy to listen to in silence and be consumed by or equally effective played softly in the background as a sonic antidote for one's own confused or stressed out world so to speak. However one listens ton this highly recommended recording, the CD¹s worth and artistry are unmistakable. Added recommendation emphasis if you live near the Great Lakes or a fishing port on the Atlantic Ocean."
--Reviewed by Bill Binkelman, Wind and Wire (www.windandwire.com)

"The album speaks of grays and blues, reds and yellows and serenity and confusion. The juxtapositions are ambiguities as Matt teases listeners and baits them to decide where to go with the drift. The soul becomes the guide as Matt provide only provides the vehicle. This gentle set provides essential sonic exploration and meditation!"
--Reviewed by Jim Brenholts, Author, Tracks Across the Universe

"I think Huronic Minor is brilliant, and if I may say, completely different from your previous effort For Running Time. I don't know what to play first. I will surely chose two or three longer pieces and give them airplay."
--Reviewed by Vladimir Jovanovic, Inner Space Radio, Croatia

" Borghi has crafted a superb collection of dark drones, bruised wanderings, and ravaged ruins, glimpses of a psyche's attempts to deal with nightmarish realities. This is rainy-day fog shrouded doom-cast netherworld music. Fans of Roach, Robert Scott Thompson, 1980s Robert Rich "sleep tunes," and all such "melting brain" music will enjoy this! Recommended release."

One of our most popular and best-selling releases ever, Somnium by Robert Rich, sold out its initial pressing of 2,000 copies late last year. We've gone ahead and pressed another 1,000 so if you missed out the first time, you can still own a copy of one of the landmark works in ambient music.

Robert Rich - Somnium (DVD)

2001. Back in print as of April 2008!

For those who are unclear about the format of SOMNIUM: it's an ordinary DVD-video disc, playable in regular, garden-variety home DVD players, as well as DVD-rom drives on you PC or Mac. It does not require (and in fact is not compatible with) a high-end "DVD-audio" format machine. To put it another way, it's a DVD-video with music only, no picture (aside from the menus). The DVD-video format was used because it enabled us to store 7 hours of continuous audio on one side of one disc -- no breaks in the program... no need to change discs or wait for a changer to swap from disc 5 to disc 6, for example. It is a stereo (two channel) audio program.

Technical questions aside, SOMNIUM is a re-creation of Robert Rich's famous "sleep concerts," which began during Robert's time at Stanford University. These sleep concerts have been much discussed, but few current fans of ambient/space music have actually attended them. Consequently, a lot of speculation and mystery has grown about the "legendary sleep concerts." Now you'll have an opportunity to stretch out in the dark and listen to some of Robert Rich's finest deep, subliminal ambience.... seven hours worth, uninterrupted!

Ready to purchase now, 7 hours of music playable in any DVD player, for $21.99, here:

ISAN - Digitalis (Darla category)
(Price: $10.99)
"English duo of Robin Saville and Antony Ryan make beautiful sounds, picking up their signals from deep space, like pulse coded informational rhythmic tone clusters of synthetic extraterrestrial folk music of cellular activities, breathing, bubbling, and fizzing with life. All instrumental, seven tracks, bringing to mind; Cluster, Microstoria, To Rocco Rot, and even grand daddies Kraftwerk. -- George Parsons, DREAM Magazine. At home. The synthesizer sounds great, warm, embracing, lively, almost alive. But what\'s that noise, that strange hiss? You open up the main wooden cabinet. You suddenly realize that this synthesizer once was alive. It used to be a bug\'s family living room. The hiss and the buzz is caused by, now long dead, little bug kids who glued themselves to the filter circuits and who tried to play table tennis on the A-C-adaptor. \"Should I clean the inside? Should I get rid of the cracklings?,\" you ask yourself. No way, you like what you hear. This keyboard is alive. ItŌs good that way. You close the door and start recording... If our mutual friend found beetles in his synth, ISAN'S equipment must be inhabited by proper salamanders, pattering constantly over circuits, stumbling over wires. Robin and Toe, the two mates operating this 'Integrated Services Analogue Network' (ISAN), appreciate the salamander\'s help and dedicated this whole album to their little friend. A couple of years ago, they both met in Leicester, discovered a common interest in "using dodgy old keyboards to make a dodgy old noise" and started recording together. Mixing the simple beauty of melodies generated with analogue keyboards and the bumpy, quirky rhythms old drum machines create when you switch them on, ISAN produce some of the most irresistible pop anthems the whole family can hum along to." Hammock - Raising Your Voice...Trying to Stop An Echo (Darla category)
(Price: $13.99)
"Raising Your VoiceÉTrying to Stop an Echo is the anticipated follow up to HammockÕs debut, Kenotic, a record that All Music Guide described as ŅÉin every way a contender for classic status in the Shoegazing genre.Ó Although cherished in Shoegazer circles, KenoticÕs two months charting in CMJÕs Radio 200 and high profile appearances during NBCÕs 2006 Olympic Coverage and on NPRÕs All Songs Considered, Hearts of Space, Echoes and Musical Starstreams revealed that Hammock was also causing a stir among tastemakers and fans of Ambient, Post-Rock, Drone and Electronic. The duoÕs eighteen newest tracks will do little to change that cross-genre appeal. Raising Your VoiceÉTrying to Stop an Echo is characterized by the duoÕs hallmark: thick curtains of cascading electric guitars that merge into pure expressions of hope, stillness, joy and loss. Accompanied by strings, piano, ethereal vocals and an occasional undercurrent of percussion, these beautiful, layered guitar washes range from whisper-soft minimalism to moments of driving, slow-burn intensity. Simply put, Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson make music that is filled with human passion and emotion. Welcome to this winterÕs new soundtrack. \"Éa perfect combination of the swirling, amorphous beauty of ambient music and the passionate pulse of electronica." -Brian Baker, Amplifier Magazine... These arrived some time ago, and were added to the Hypnos Online Store, but we're just getting around to mentioning them... here's a great selection of the available releases from the incredible Canadian dark ambient label, Cyclic Law. These CDs are are great examples of beautifully packaged deep ambient, perhaps darker than most of what we sell here at Hypnos, but never abrasive or too aggressive. Fans of Lustmord or Sleep Research Facility or Lull should enjoy these. Also, Cyclic Law artist Svartsinn will be appearing on the upcoming Hypnos compilation CD, Message from a Subatomic World.

Svartsinn - Traces of Nothingness (Cyclic Law category)
(Price: $13.99)
The 3rd offering from Norway\'s Svartsinn could be acknowledged as the end of a trilogy, the first opus \"Devouring Consciousness\" was an album containing stories made during what the artist explains as being some difficult and rough times. The second offering, \"Of Darkness And Re-Creation\", was the process of trying to deal with these struggles and reflect on them. \"Traces Of Nothingness\" is simply the reaction, result and the path ahead in this ongoing, seemingly endless darkness. A slightly more melodic, sad and obscure side of Svartsinn that still keeps the cold and dark atmosphere that defines his sound. First 1000 copies in special Digipack. 8 Tracks. Running time; 50:57 Track list: Traces Of Nothingness / No Passage To The Innermost... / Lost In Reveries / Misanthropic Odyssey / Through Apathetic Eyes / All The Colours Are Fading / ...But The Fire Burns No More / Emptiness Is Form... New Risen Throne - Whispers of the Approaching Wastefulness (Cyclic Law category)
(Price: $13.99)
The latest offering and first for Cyclic Law of one of Italy\'s finest Black Ambient master. The main concept and transpiring feeling of this album and the title \"Whispers of the approaching wastefulness\" can best be described as the \"steps\" or \"journey\" leading to the acknowledgment of the approaching end of all things. \"Whispers\" represent doubts and thoughts about the prevalent decadence that is around and deep within us and \"wastefulness\" translates to the imminent, definitive end of all things, to oblivion... The album is divided into 3 chapters: I - Oblivious to unknown threat (first signs) Tracks 1 & 2, II - Acquisition of knowledge (signs) Tracks 3, 4 & 5, III - Advent of a definitive wastefulness (final signs) Track 6. Tholen - Sternklang (Cyclic Law category)

Sternklang is the expression of the intimate encounter with the whole, the direct connection with the stars and the vast universe, the sense of complete union with all the overdimensional attributes of what sourrounds us. With THOLEN, Eisen, the man behind this project has given us an aurally materialized glimpse of his numerous stargazing evenings...where the soundscapes are revealed while the stars seemed to gather and sing out of their primordial and powerful environment. The darkest hour is always the one before sunrise... In fold out gatefold cardboard sleeve. 1 Track. Running Time: 1:11:07 Track List: Sternklang1 / Sternklang2 / Sternklang3 / Sternklang4... Sinke Dus - Akrasia (Cyclic Law category)
(Price: $13.99)
Akrasia is an old question dealing with the weakness of the will. To behave \"akratically\" is when one acts against his better judgement, committing acts that are known to be wrong but yet still going through with the motion. Markus Lonebrink wanted to explore not so much the philosophical issues at hand, but rather the subjective experience of akrasia itself. To learn of the underlying motives of when one acts akratically. Certain events in the akratic process felt natural to him and it was those he tried to integrate into these soundscapes. There are no conclusions described in the music, but there might be a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel and perhaps the shadow of a hint of why we humans sometimes act as irrationally as we do. A shared quest to gain better knowledge of oneself through this self-revisionistic ambient journey filled with ethereally lush passages that give way to a truly visionary and immersive experience. The album also features a special collaboration with PŠr Bostrom of KAMMARHEIT. In fold out gatefold cardboard sleeve. 7 Tracks. Running Time: 45:50 Track List: The Premonition / Acedia / Remnants / That Which Was Lost / The Abyss / That Which Lies Beyond / Fortitude... (more/buy)

AirSculpture - TranceAtlantic (2 CD) (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $16.99)
2005. "These recordings were taken from the band's US tour in 2004. The first disc features Parts 1 to 3 of 'Walk The Locust' from their 'Gatherings' concert. The second disc features the three-part title track, which was taken from the late night live radio concert they did after the gig. Despite the word \'trance\' in the title there is nothing remotely dancey about this album but rather, (as well as the obvious pun), it refers to the effect the music will probably have on you. Even though there are some great sequences and rhythms here this isn\'t, for the most part, AirSculpture in sledgehammer mode. Rather they are being truer to their name, creating wonderful, spellbinding structures - works of art in their own right, out of pure air.\" --Reviewed by DL at Synth Music Direct... (more/buy)
Max van Richter - Resurrection (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
2002. "In keeping with the Arcane albums, 'Resurrection' encapsulates and extends the classic melodic/sequencer style which TD used to perfection in the early 80\'s. Debate still occasionally surfaces about the pro\'s and con\'s of using comparisons in reviews, but when you hear an album like this it is totally appropriate to make comparison with the very best EM ever made. Had Schmoelling or Froese released this as a long lost TD solo work no-one would have batted an eyelid as to its credentials, and it\'s stature as one of the best solo albums to emerge from the scene. It is totally magnificent, totally captivating, totally essential.\" --Reviewed by GG at Synth Music Direct... (more/buy)
Javi Canovas - Light Echoes (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
2006. "Javi will be a new name to many but he has, over the last few years, been perfecting his art. In 2005 he put his toe in the water with a self-produced album \'Impasse\'. It was well received amongst sequencer nuts. This early promise was not a \'flash in the pan\' as \'Light Echoes\' is a real cracker. The title makes it sound as if the album might be rather mellow but nothing could be further from the truth, as it is a hard-core sequencer belting epic where his complex sequences are allowed to let rip almost throughout. I loved this album.\" --Reviewed by DL at Synth Music Direct... (more/buy)
The Omega Syndicate - Phonosphere (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
2004. "Lovely, thick analogue cosmic whooshing might sound like quite a standard way of beginning a track but there are ways of doing it- and there is The Omega Syndicate way of doing it! In electronic music the choice of sounds is vital and these really are impressive- indeed they are some of the best space sounds I have ever heard. Out of this stellar bliss first one high register sequence then another massively bass-laden one surge forwards. Again the sounds are awesome. They constantly morph and move in and out of the mix almost like gusts of wind surging one way then another in a storm, wreaking havoc as they go. Indeed you could say it is completely self-sufficient containing rhythm, melody, power and atmosphere all in its ever-shifting pattern of notes.\" --Reviewed by DL at Synth Music Direct... (more/buy)
Otarion - Creator (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
2002. "This doesn't fit into any particular category. It takes the best elements from retro, modern rhythmic, atmospheric- everything really, and puts them together to form one of the most enjoyable albums I have ever heard. \'Evolution\' was a triumph but on \'Creator\' the sound is even bigger, the hooks even stronger and there is so much of that mysterious factor that is hard to put your finger on that just makes you want to shout out in pleasure. Even the artwork created by Marcus Hildebrandt and put together by Gary Hall is stunning.\" --Reviewed bt DL at Synth Music Direct... (more/buy)
The Omega Syndicate - Apocalypse (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
2006. "The coolest of cosmic sounds get the title track underway. This is really moody stuff. Three minutes in and a stunning (and I mean stunning!) melodic sequence strikes up along with some menacing cosmic guitar playing which adds that extra bite without dominating too much. There is the feel of pent up power about to explode. \'The Lycanthropic Principle\' cranks the sequences up immediately. A wonderful bass laden one erupts from the speakers accompanied by sympathetic rhythms and excellent tuneful pads. Extra bite is added in the form of superb guitar riffs nestling in the middle of the mix. Then to make this exquisite combination still better in comes the most stunning lead line duelling with the guitar. Some say that guitars can sometimes spoil EM but surely that can\'t be said of this, it just works so well. If Tangerine Dream had come up with a track like this in the last 20 years people would be in ecstatic bliss. It really is something special. \'Pixie\'s Playground\' is another winner. Shimmering metallic drones mix with sonic tinklings, a heavenly flutey synth line floating above it all. A bouncy melodic loop adds a little extra movement which is soon stepped up a gear as another wonderful bass sequence rolls into formation. \'The Global Extinction of the Wireless\' begins rather moodily with a melancholy melody just hanging in the air above delicate fizzing drones. A rapid tinkling sequence cuts through the calmness. A second joins it along with restrained guitar licks. Yet another sequence is chucked into the brew and we are now storming along in almost \'Force Majeure\' fashion. Things continue to gain added oomph, the guitar taking the main melodic duties but keeping fairly restrained, letting the sequences provide the powerful salvos. \'Masque\' starts like there is a UFO coming down to land then yet another awesome sequence rolls forward with steam hissing from its vapour trail. What we have here is of classic Arc proportions. The lead lines, one after another, are all b rilliant and could have come straight from Ian Boddy as Mark wielded the mighty modular." --Reviewed by DL at Synth Music Direct... (more/buy)

Mark Shreeve - Embryo (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
"Originally released in 1980 on cassette, this was Mark Shreeve’s debut outing in the world of Electronic Music. This CD release gives everyone the opportunity to hear the music as it was originally intended, with the sonorous clarity and dynamics of the digital domain. Just to clear up any potential confusion, this isn’t a dodgy bootleg of a cassette copy , this is a full blown official CD release sourced from the master tapes, and it sounds superb. As the title suggests, this is an embryonic journey through some early EM influences, primarily Schulze and Tangerine Dream of the 70’s. " --Reviewed by GG at Synth Music Direct... (more/buy)

Syndromeda - In Touch with the Stars (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
2001. "What we have here is Syndromeda's performance at Jodrell Bank earlier this year. Its all new material recorded especially for the concert and what a gig it was. If you weren't there listening to this CD is the next best thing. The dark rumbling drones created for the beginning of the opener 'So So Far Away' are so deep they got a pile of CDs I had placed near a speaker to fall over. They were ideal for the cosmic setting of this performance, it was like being near some star about to go super nova. There is so much power here and yet at the same time a sort of peacefulness. This album has some of the meanest, deepest atmospherics as well as awesome sequences and rhythms. It should give the speakers a real work out - play loud!"

Mike Andrews - Time & Science (Neu Harmony category)

Arcane - 33 1/3 RPM (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
2004. "It was long rumored that the seminal 'Teach Yourself To Crash Cars' album was planned as a double. The myth grew when a copy of 'Pt 2' was supposedly spotted in a backstreet record shop in Berlin, next to TD's 'The Keep' LP. It wasn't until Buchloh's studio was being relocated that rumour became reality. In amongst a box of various EM albums was a white label master which simply had written on it 'Arcane 33 1/3 RPM'. It was unmistakably the long lost part 2, and this is a digitally remastered transcription of those sacred grooves which is presented here as the first two tracks. In keeping with the vinyl origins the packaging is a microcosm of gatefold reminiscence, with the CD itself mimicking its long-play forebears. It is hugely effective, and the moody imagery fits the concept to perfection. Overall this is an enthralling album, and the key features that make Arcane one of the very top EM bands of the moment can be found in abundance. The remastering has been handled very well, the packaging is great, it really is another outstanding chapter in this band's already illustrious portfolio. Quite simply a "must buy".

2000. "A lone organ sound gives the beginning of the first part a rather Gothic feel. This is compounded still further when at just over a minute it is replaced by angelic wordless vocal effects. You can just imagine the mist swirling round some abandoned monastery where the echoes of its long dead inhabitants still reverberate from one ruined wall to another. These all disappear before three minutes, the mood well and truly set as a deep note repeatedly resonates from the speakers and an ominous melodic motif makes proceedings seem even more sinister. In case you have been thinking that you have heard of this artist before but can\'t quite place him it might help to tell you that he is one half of Dweller at the Threshold.\" --reviewed by DL from Synth Music Direct... 2001. "We begin with a chaotic collage of sounds and effects out of which emerges an ominous drone and slow pulses. In complete contrast we then get a plucked string type lead line to which is added an absolutely fantastic melodic sequence - one of the best if not the best Kubusschnitt have come up with so far. What\'s more it just gets better, faster and more intense as we progress into the second part with yet more fantastic lead lines. Various Artists - Okefenokee Dreams 2001 (Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $13.99)
2001. "OK, a history lesson first. In 2000 Vic Rek organised a meeting of Tangerine Dream fans at the Okefenokee swamp. During the event Free System Project and Dave Brewer improvised a superb set of music. This was released as 'Okefenokee Dreams'. A year later the event was held again but this time Bill Fox as well as John Christian and Pete Ruczynski from AirSculpture joined in with the fun, all the musicians playing together on most of the tracks. What you get here on 'Okefenokee Dreams 2001, is a selection of the best tracks from these sessions. The appropriately titled 'Wildlife at the Okefenokee' initially features what sounds like heavy breathing or even snoring (!) of some large animal. A looped vocal sample then informs us that this is 'a great example of some of the wildlife here at Okefenokee'. It has to be one of the strangest starts to a CD that I can remember. A slow sequence comes to life and we settle down to more familiar territory. The sequence becomes more strident and a nice melodic lead line can be heard. A second excellent rapid sequence comes in mutating beautifully accompanied by spot on tron sounds and electric guitar lead line. Those people who wondered what the hell was going on at the beginning of the disc will now probably be in retro heaven.- wow! It is hard to think how this combination of sounds and pulsations can be bettered.\" --reviwed by DL at Synth Music Direct... (more/buy)

As the track progresses more melodies come and go. Many of the tracks use a similar formula though all have a unique character of their own. This is fantastic and amazingly infectious music, I loved every track. Nearly all the numbers will rhythmically get your whole body moving- its impossible to stay still. Rarely have I come across rhythms that are so irresistible. Above all it tries to be enjoyable and exciting - and succeeds. It\'s a breath of fresh air!" --Reviewed by DL at Synth Music Direct... Carved from dense harmonically rich acoustic and electronic material, this set of tone zones move at glacial speed, hovering very close to the Earth\'s surface for the duration. This one's been delayed for a while, but is finally ready. It's the Hypnos debut from Sense Project, and this album is as densely-packed with sounds and ideas as anything we've ever done.

Artist: Sense Project
Title: The Sublime
Label: Hypnos Secret Sounds, ltd 2cdr edition of 300

Sense Project - The Sublime

2008. This release is a departure for the Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint in that it will be a two disc set. Sense Project is an alter-ego of Robert Logan, who releases experimental electronic music under his true name, including the truly amazing debut CD Cognessence. Robert also composed the music for Alex Gibney's Oscar-winning documentary feature 'Taxi to the Darkside' along with Ivor Guest and Philip Sheppard.

The Sublime careens from drone ambient, to churning, confrontational Aphex Twin style rhythms, with perhaps more rich and diverse sound content than any album we've ever released. Normally we'd have reservations about releasing a double CD by a young, emerging artist but this one justifies its duration without question. If you're not sure about buying an ambient 2CDR release by a teen-aged recording artist (actually, he may be 20 by now... we should check before we go around repeating the "he's only 19" thing), just give the MP3 sample clips a try.

Here's another batch of new items on the Hypnos Online Store, this time from the room40 label. This is a fascinating new minimalist/experimental sound label based in Australia and featuring an interesting mix of artists from all over the world. Please note that many of these are 3" CDs of brief duration, but these are imported limited editions and many are already out of print. If you want more music than the 20 or so minutes that fits on a mini-CD, look at the 2CD compilation at the bottom. We have a limited stock of these items, and some will be difficult or impossible for us to obtain again.

Lawrence English - Ghost Towns (ltd 3"cd) (room40 label)
(Price: $15.99, ltd 3"cd")
Recorded in the later half of 2003, this composition, falling just shy of 20 minutes is composed largely of field recordings. The only processing is via EQ and pitch shifting. The work is an abstracted impressionist sound portrait, sketching out the isolated soundscapes that exist, for the most part unheard, in these forgotten realms.

Philip Samartzis & Kozo Inada - h[] (ltd 3" cd) (room40 label)
(Price: $14.99, ltd 3"cd")
Australian electro-acoustic composer Philip Samartzis is an increasingly vital presence in the Australian sound community. His work over the past decade and a half has offered a prophetic vision for each of his chosen formats and aesthetic approaches.

On h [ ] Samartzis is joined by minimal Japanese composer Kozo Inada, who brings with him an equally refined and austere sound sensibility. Between them, these two composers collaborate to produce a highly detailed work that juxtaposes, obscures and ultimately unites pure electronics with environmental recordings. These elements are set to work against and within one another, the results causing the listener to reconsider which sounds are emanating from the interwoven tapestry of source materials.

Celebrating the rich tradition of acousmatic sound and musique concrŽte, this composition provides a potent reminder of the potentials of sound as a transformative and (imagined) narrative medium... (more/buy)
Philip Samartzis / Lawrence English - One Plus One (ltd 3" cd) (room40 label)
(Price: $14.99, ltd 3"cd")
The turntable has enjoyed a varied history in the realm of performance and experimental music. From the early phonographic works of John Cage to the spliced cut-ups of Christian Marclay in the 1980s, the device has proven to be a versatile tool for the creation and transformation of sound.

Following a joint billing at BrisbaneÕs Metro Arts Space in 2002, Melbourne based composer Philip Samartzis and sound artist Lawrence English shared a 30-minute performance that was to become the beginning of their on-going turntable duo. Both Samartzis (a member of the legendary Australian turntable group Gum) and English (a regular player with DJ Olive, Janek Schaefer and others) have long histories of live actions utilising turntables and together each of them brings a wealth of gestures and unique sonic qualities to the instrument.

Recorded in early 2006, this edition captures the initial studio works from these two artists and seeks to reflect on the potential of the cyclical nature of vinyl and the surface noise that envelopes the very medium itself.

Richard Chartier - Current (ltd 3" cd) (room40 label)
(Price: $14.99, ltd 3"cd")

Richard ChartierÕs sound installation and recorded pieces evoke a state of aural awareness. Working with a variety of minimal structures and refined sound sources, Chartier has been responsible for some of the most austere audio works of recent years. Aesthetically refined and creatively provocative much of his work has focused on the edges of perception, both in frequency range and amplitude.

On Current, his latest work to be released in conjunction with his performances in Australia and Japan in late 2006, Chartier offers a multilayered sound field. Shimmering high tones filter amid a clouded layer of dense audio mist Š across the 20 minutes, he creates a potent journey through crisp yet warm sound textures, metered pulses and spacious stereo field.

The piece is thematically linked to the idea of travel by airplane - the disassociation of time and location Š air currents above and the oceanic currents below... (more/buy)
Taylor Deupree - Landing (ltd 3" cd) (room40 label)
(Price: $15.99, ltd 3"cd")

With ŌLandingÕ American sound artist Taylor Deupree offers another vision of subtle shifting audio. A progression from the full-length Northern (12K), Landing matches acoustic instruments across broad washes of warm sonic texture and floating spatial movement. Removed from the falling sheets of silent snow swelling outside his home, DeupreeÕs Landing creates a generous and temperate sonic environment Š both reflective and measured. An audio escape from chillier climes.

Taylor Deupree (b. 1971) is a sound artist, graphic designer, and photographer residing in New York. On January 1st, 1997, he founded 12k, a record label that focuses on minimalism and contemporary musical forms. In 12kÕs 10 years of existence Deupree has released over 40 CDs by a roster of international sound artists and has developed 12k into one of the most respected experimental electronic labels in the world.

In September 2000, Deupree and sound artist Richard Chartier formed LINE, a sublabel of 12k that curates its continuing documentation of compositional and installation work by composers exploring the aesthetics of contemporary and digital minimalism.

Christopher Willits - Plants And Hearts (ltd 3" cd) (room40 label)
(Price: $15.99, ltd 3"cd")
Christopher Willits is a ceaseless creative force focused on teasing out the most from his instrument of choice Š the guitar. With 'Plants and Hearts', he sets out on a divergent exploration of the tonal qualities of guitar, rendering out a composition that references in equal doses the minimal harmonic shifts of Terry Riley and the phasing works of Steve Reich.

Incorporating 4hz isochronic pulses and panning at the same frequency, this work encourages the formation of 4hz brainwave patterns associated with states of meditation, deep relaxation, enhanced creativity, light sleep and lucid dreaming.

From Willits:
ŅI've always wanted to release a pure droning guitar piece and equally wanted to incorporate 4hz pulses and panning into something long form. These long drones, were recorded MS giving me some great stuff to experiment with, and allowed me blend these concepts in an unusual way.Ó... (more/buy)
Tim Hecker - Norberg, Sweden (ltd 3" cd) (room40 label)
(Price: $15.99, ltd 3"cd")
Recorded at the Norberg Festival (Sweden) amidst the mineshafts and cluttered buildings strewn throughout parts the city, this 21 minute live piece summarises much of what makes Tim HeckerÕs music so vital and compelling. Adept at counter-pointing the most ferocious of distorted platters with smooth beds of ambient sound and potent melodic overtones, Tim Hecker creates music with a vast depth. On Norberg, this depth seems almost endless, as layer upon layer of sound are compiled into a swelling and all together visceral oceanic sound wave.

Recently touring Australia and New Zealand and performing at ROOM40ÕS annual festival Open Frame, this CD comes on the back of some incredible live performances in the Southern Hemisphere.

Tim Hecker is a Canadian-based musician and sound artist, born in Vancouver. Since 1996, he has produced a range of audio works for Mille Plateaux, ROOM40, Kranky, Alien8, Force Inc, Staalplaat, and Fat Cat.

His works have been described as Ņstructured ambientÓ, Ņtectonic color platesÓ and Ņcathedral electronic musicÓ. More to the point, he has focused on exploring the intersection of noise, dissonance and melody, fostering an approach to songcraft which is both physical and emotive.

The New York Times has described his work as Ņforeboding, abstract pieces in which static and sub-bass rumbles open up around slow moving notes and chords, like fissures in the earth waiting to swallow them wholeÓ. His Radio Amor was recognized as a key recording of 2003 by The Wire magazine. His Harmony in Ultraviolet was in Pitchfork's Top 20 of key recordings for 2006.

"[Norberg]... delivers generously off the bat, focusing on the dissonant contradictions of symphonic warmth and white noise evocation that have become the producerÕs highly recognisable trump card. This is well worth chasing down"

We've received many new items available now through the Hypnos Online Store, during this past few weeks, but have been too busy to keep updating this news page at the same pace we've been adding CDs to the store. Latest feature: the amazing Canadian dark ambient label, Cyclic Law. This label is making some of the most beautifully-presented CD packaging and artwork in the world right now, and we've imported some specially selected items that we believe should be of most interest to Hypnos listeners.

Svartsinn - Traces Of Nothingness (Cyclic Law label)
(Price: $13.99)
The 3rd offering from Norway's Svartsinn could be acknowledged as the end of a trilogy, the first opus "Devouring Consciousness" was an album containing stories made during what the artist explains as being some difficult and rough times. The second offering, "Of Darkness And Re-Creation", was the process of trying to deal with these struggles and reflect on them. "Traces Of Nothingness" is simply the reaction, result and the path ahead in this ongoing, seemingly endless darkness. A slightly more melodic, sad and obscure side of Svartsinn that still keeps the cold and dark atmosphere that defines his sound. First 1000 copies in special Digipack.

Gustaf's second full lenght is a unique, evolved experience offering you to embark upon an odyssey through ancient and lifeless surroundings. Sweeping ambient soundscapes and delicate textures mingle with the distant shrieks of surreal machinery - conjuring up images of abandoned and forgotten places, clouded skies and dead cities where time has been standing still. A captured moment from a strange no man's land lit by a perpetual gloom, Primordial Resonance is a voyage only limited by the imagination of the listener. First 1000 copies come in an oversized fold out cover (A5).

New Risen Throne - Whispers of the approaching wastefulness (Enhanced CD) (Cyclic Law label)
(Price: $13.99)
The latest offering and first for Cyclic Law of one of Italy's finest Black Ambient master. The main concept and transpiring feeling of this album and the title "Whispers of the approaching wastefulness" can best be described as the "steps" or "journey" leading to the acknowledgment of the approaching end of all things. "Whispers" represent doubts and thoughts about the prevalent decadence that is around and deep within us and "wastefulness" translates to the imminent, definitive end of all things, to oblivion... The album is divided into 3 chapters: I - Oblivious to unknown threat (first signs) Tracks 1 & 2, II - Acquisition of knowledge (signs) Tracks 3, 4 & 5, III - Advent of a definitive wastefulness (final signs) Track 6. NEW RISEN THRONE's latest opus offers a bleak and sorrow filled soundtrack celebrating death with little hope for rebirth... This Enhanced CD features an exclusive bonus video clip of the track "Unknown (II)" First 1000 copies comes in a 6 panel textured cardboard sleeve.

Sinke Dus - Akrasia (Cyclic Law label)
(Price: $13.99)
Akrasia is an old question dealing with the weakness of the will. To behave "akratically" is when one acts against his better judgement, committing acts that are known to be wrong but yet still going through with the motion.

Today we're featuring some new recommendations, added not long ago to the Hypnos Online Store. These are four releases from the always-popular Groove Unlimited label, imported from The Netherlands.

Rudy Adrian - Par Avion (Groove label)
(Price: $13.99)
2007. "Par Avion - Sequencer Sketches vol.4" contains 48 minutes of sequencer music plus on the same disc a "bonus album" of "Starfields II" which are about 32 minutes of electronic atmospheres (darker and more electronic sounding than my usual "atmospheric music"). One of the sequencer tracks is a remix of a track that came out with E-Dition magazine and is a collaboration with Alpha Wave Movement.

"The first five tracks of Par Avion, nearly 50 minutes, are the sequencer sketches, starting with the dreamy title track. A brief French soliloquy courtesy of Rudy’s good friend Barbara Stone adds a unique twist to his familiar synthesizer sounds. Soft in pacing and mood, this makes a beautiful opener. Also mellow is “Bavarian Eagle”, with a fascinating sequence that sounds like a child’s toy or music box being hand-cranked to create the lilting sound. As Adrian does so well, this one slowly builds, picking up the pace and deftly layering in synth solos and various electronic sounds and effects. It is very much the classic Rudy Adrian sound, almost too familiar perhaps but enjoyable just the same. There are some nice segues as it moves from one section to the next over its 14 ½ minute course, in particular a mesmerizing section around the 10:00 mark. “Across the Canyons” is a collaboration with Alpha Wave Movement that flows quite evenly along. Though definitely sequencer based, this fourth volume of sequencer sketches is more relaxed throughout. “Soaring Birds” even features a lovely piano intro. Only “Sore Birds” really picks up the pace at the end. The last two tracks, nearly 30 minutes, are intended as a bonus album, quite different from the rest, a very ambient affair. “Starfields 2 – Part 1” starts with dark metallic shimmering sounds. If one could imagine music to accompany free-floating in deep space, it would sound something like this.

This is colder and harsher than Adrian’s mellower albums like MoonWater and The Healing Lake, pretty dark and dank stuff for him, but he pulls it off beautifully. Lie in the middle of a dark room with headphones on for this one. Two fantastic albeit different Rudy Adrian albums on one disc, what could be better?"

Volt - Nucleosynthesis (Groove label)
(Price: $13.99)
2007. All tracks composed and performed by Michael Shipway and Steve Martin. Nucleosynthesis the chemistry of the "Big Bang". In our case, the chemistry between artist and audience that helped us create this album.

"The duo Michael Shipway and Steve Smith continue their grand tour of accessible and attractive sequencer-based electronic music with “Nucleosynthesis”. It contains three long tracks, on which the typical UK electronic music sound melts with Berliner School inspired sequencing and textures. The music pulsates and flows in the opening track “Explosion”, then flows back to a sort of resting point on the dreamy atmospheres of “Evolution”. The album really reaches a great conclusion when the dynamic sequencing in “Implosion” take off, taking the listener “out there” on a 25 minute dynamic flight through the universe. It features some great solo’s and choir textures on top of various sequencer beds, which shortly made my mind wander back to the days of Wavestar and Jon Dyson. Excellent effort, guys!"

Dom F. Scab - Facta (Groove label)
(Price: $13.99)
2007 reissue of 2003 album. Reviews:
"Dom F. Scab is one of the rising forces in electronic music and he only needed a short amount of years to accomplish this. His albums “Binary Secrets” from 2001 and ”Analogical Confessions” from 2002, both released on the Groove label, are masterpieces of electronic ingenuity. It is retro, its is Berlin School, but with a strong emphasis of melody.

“Facta” is perhaps Dom’s best album to date. Again, as on “Binary Secrets” and ”Analogical Confessions”, the Spanish musician creates rather short pieces, which is quite unusual in retro-electronic music. Also, the brilliant sounds from the impressive Yamaha CS-80 synthesizer play a part on the album. The album is divided into 9 tracks (“Facts I to IX”) which all tell a certain story. These stories could easily be used as soundtracks for films. “Miracle Of The Flight” and “Invitation To Memory” are great example. The piece contains sequences, which are getting richer and richer as the track emerges. Scab also experiments from time to time like with voices in the intriguing pieces “Message Of Missing Birds” and “Knowledge Time”. Still and as always, the melody stands central in his music. With “Facta” Dom F. Scab might enter the elite of electronic music. This special music deserves it."

Frank Klare - Digitalic (Groove label)
(Price: $13.99)
2007. Digitalic is musically the successor album of Analogic (1999) which was rereleased in 2005. The new album continues syncing to Analogic as the recordings originated between 2003 and 2007. With these six digitalic compositions recorded between 2003 and 2007 the circle of Analogic-Digitalic is closed. Musically in the style of Analogic, Digitalic is a mixture of cosmic soundscapes and hypnotic sequences that all those who enjoyed Frank Klare's albums Modular Music or Moods will love.

"This CD from 2007 features 71 minutes of densely sequenced music. German synthesist Klare is joined by Ron Boots on the CD's last two tracks for a total of 24 collaborative minutes. Retro electronics produce urgent chords that are looped to generate a lavish density. Additional keyboard-driven electronics are layered in, increasing the sonic depth. These auxiliary patterns possess a more crystalline character, nicely contrasting the prevalent bulk. As the tracks progress, Klare employs a nimble-fingered complexity that increases the music's overall appeal. E-perc rhythms provide suitable propulsion for the music. These tempos generally remain submerged in the dense sequencing, enhancing the tunes from a secondary level. For the majority of this music, basic patterns are created and allowed to run in repetitive cycles. Variations are achieved through the introduction of collateral patterns. Operating in conjunction, these elements attain a rich melodic presence that communicates an ascendant drama. The electronics exhibit a classical undercurrent, one that harnesses an expansive quality and revels in modern expressions of hypnotic demeanor. The notes are deep and vibrant. The use of airier tones in the complimentary riffs results in a balanced range of sound. The two collaborative pieces manifest a more subdued mood. These tunes still maintain a vivid density of layered electronics and motivational rhythms, but a distinctly organic quality is present, attributing the tuneage with more humanity. Light-hearted auxiliary riffs imbue the last track with a decidedly bouncier mood than the rest of the CD's pensive music.

Fans of Klaus Schulze will enjoy this release."

Here now, a much-awaited new CD release from Hypnos! We've been planning this one for a long time, roughly since the same time as Austere's Pulse album, and it's great to bring this to the public.

Artist: Austere
Title: Solyaris
Label: Hypnos

Austere - Solyaris

2008. This is a creative peak for this much-overlooked ambient duo, their first release on Hypnos, following their Hypnos Secret Sounds album Pulse in 2007. In their 10 years of productivity, Austere has covered territory from Pulse's drone minimalism , ranging back through odd and trippy Coil-inspired sonic experimentation, to seamless dark ambient, and occasionally glitchy weirdness. Despite some challenging material in their back catalog, Austere have in this case produced an album as friendly and pleasant as any Austere fan could have imagined possible, and yet without resorting to the usual tricks that make music sound "listenable."

Bill Binkelman of Wind and Wire said of Austere:
"Austere is an enigmatic duo who record some of the more interesting ambient music I've heard in my six plus years of reviewing. From the swirling drones (I was gonna say "dark" drones, but ....) and eerie melancholy of Monodia to the warmth and beauty amidst minimalism of Fade... Austere are less concerned with following the path and more concerned with breaking new ground. However, they are undoubtedly enigmatic, as one would glean from the above, and shun the spotlights of media and personality."

And the Austere boys themselves, not normally prone to gushing or self-praise, say these words on the subject of this recording:
"Solyaris, our first release for 2008 e.v. on the Hypnos label is major departure from our recent emphasis on Minimalist composition, but more in the direction started by our last release, mirror.shtml and is instead is a collection of recordings improvised and recorded "live" over a weekend session and are presented in their original form, unedited in any way aside from mastering by The Sound-O-Mat.

The recordings turned out extremely well; it was obvious that our Muse(s) had visited us, and we were able to simply "let the tapes roll" and play, and this recording is made up from one track each from a recording session (we may release the rest at some later point.)

We could not be more happy with the sound of this album — there was definitely something special about that weekend and it was one of those rare occasions where everything just seemed to come together without any effort, and we think this is reflected in the musick. The CD flows very nicely, and is one of the most uplifting and special CDs we have ever released. We hope that you might enjoy it at least half as much as we do."

We here at Hypnos are likewise happy with this album, and find ourselves playing it over and over, soothed and bewildered at the strange and beautiful atmosphere. Solyaris does not fit squarely into any one genre, but it is wonderful to listen to, without being easy or without depth. The sounds could be described as the thought transmissions of benevolent aliens. They mean you no harm, and they thank you for listening!

Here's a new, recommended item on the Hypnos Online Store, a debut CD by a group we feel absolutely certain many here will enjoy, Mico Nonet.

Mico Nonet - Marmalade Balloon (miscellaneous section)
(Price: $11.99)
2007. We here at Hypnos HQ think this is one of the nicest and best-est things to have crossed our ears in quiet a while. It's a beautiful, ear-pleasing blend of relatively "straight" chamber music with just a touch of electronic tones.

A minimalist layer of ambient analog synthesizers with cello, viola, French horn and oboe performed by members of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Berlin Philharmonic.... (more/buy)

Here's our latest from Hypnos Secret Sounds, by Jonathan Block (who has usually recorded under the name Synthetic Block in the past.

Artist: Jonathan Block
Title: The Anatomy of Waves
Label: Hypnos Secret Sounds hss17, limited cdr edition of 300

Jonathan Block - The Anatomy of Waves

2008. Hypnos is very pleased to announce a new release by Jonathan Block on our Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint. Jonathan has previously worked with Hypnos, when his album Sonic Approach (under his alter-ego Synthetic Block) was released on our Binary sub-label. Also his track 'The Language of Rocks' heads off the most recent Hypnos compilation Sounds of a Universe Overheard. The new album, The Anatomy of Waves, is a series of four long tracks featuring improvisations using an electronic "wind instrument" device, an Akai EWI4000s wind synthesizer.

Surface waves. Standing waves. Sound waves. Waves are disturbances that travel through space and time transferring energy from one point to another; often the physical manifestation of an underlying cycle. The Anatomy of Waves is a study of these cycles through evolving waves of sound — representations of our attachment to the crests and troughs that are characteristics of living in this world.

The music on this CD was created using a wind synthesizer processed through an effects pedal board and looped using long delay times that fade slowly, enabling new sounds and loops to be added and subtracted. All the tracks have a compositional foundation but this structure is fluid enough to allow the music to move in any number of directions, often simultaneously. From melodic to abstract, musical elements emerge and coalesce by design and hazard as phrases interact with one another and sounds are added that never become part of a repeating loop. Jonathan Block has been releasing electronic music for over 20 years, often under the name Synthetic Block. Block’s music has been released by Hypnos, Binary and Gears of Sand. In addition to his solo works, Block has performed and recorded with Dave Fulton, The Circular Ruins (APK) and Ben Fleury-Steiner.

The Anatomy Of Waves was recorded using an Akai EWI4000s wind synthesizer with a Vox Tonelab LE for sound processing and a Boss DD-20 digital delay for looping.

Dean De Benedictis - Salvaging the Past (Spotted Peccary label)
(Price: $13.99)

Dean De Benedictis, has envisioned a vital work of instrumental compositions, exploring the art of electronic music with a refreshing integrity. Blending traditional electronic tones and structures with acoustic elements, he has sculpted an album that is raw and direct. In essence, he has captured a heart of true electronic music, while suggesting more thought-provoking themes.

De Benedictis realizes this vision through various electronic tonalities, samples, and acoustic instruments such as mayahachi flute, bamboo flutes, cello, piano, voice, guitars, hand drums, and percussion – applying all, with the passion and inspiration of the masters before him.

Salvaging the Past is not only an homage to the electronic music of the past, but expands the vocabulary of the present.

Another new round of additions for the Hypnos Online Store -- more music from the always-interesting Gears of Sound label.

Moljebka Pvlse - Driftsond (Gears of Sand label)
(Price: $12.99)
2007. Modern textural, drone-ambient

"Those into droning ambient, both dark and ethereal, should be well acquainted with Mathias Josefson's creature by now, given the amazing quality of his releases on Cold Meat Industry, Eibon, Segerhuva, Fin de Sičcle, Mystery Sea etc. This new full-length work is released on high-quality, you-wouldn't-tell-it's-a cdr by Ben Fleury Steiner's Gears of Sand imprint, which makes perfect sense, as both artists have deeply investigated the potential of guitar-generated soundscapes. Unlike many of MP's recent releases, which incorporated lots of manipulated field recordings and even voices, this is a pure guitar drone work. Think of vast drones and tones of resonating strings, probably played with an ebow and filtered with an array of pedals. As simple as that, but less is more in this case, as the four tracks have a constant intensity and quality which is often lacking in releases of this genre. Fans of the most abstract, less "rock" (ahem!) side of Fear Falls Burning, Troum, etc. should go & grab a copy of this for sure."
-Reviewed by Eugenio Maggi, 4/5 stars, Chain DLK

"By now Mathias Josefson's project Moljebka Pvlse has gathered some interest due to a bunch of interesting ambient industrial drone releases. Here he presents his latest work, which perhaps, I am merely guessing here is a of a bit of different nature than his previous works, and one possible reason for that might be that it's a CDR release (although on Gears Of Sand the quality is so high that's hard to to tell the difference). The four pieces on 'Driftsond' are more minimal than before. Each piece seems to be built around one set of sounds and a little bit of electronic processing. A bit like Alvin Lucier's 'Music On Long Thin Wire' at times, but here with a touch more musical sense, like a drone version of his work. But it has that same minimalist approach. But nowhere that this leap into boredom, not at all really. Each of the pieces depicts a desolate world, pictured in one color and the more one looks at this image, the more details are revealed. Quite long pieces here, but needed to bring out the finer subtleness of the music. Perhaps nothing new under the drone sun, that must be said too, but throughout a great disc."

Hinsidan - Bleach Dye Yr Heart (Gears of Sand label)
(Price: $12.99)
2007. Post-industrial drone with a hypnotic bite. There's a treasure of some of the most compelling post-industrial drone music hidden in an unlikely place: DENMARK. And we here at Gears of Sand are ecstatic to release Danish duo Hinsidan's latest release. By contrast to many detached ambient soundscape artists who seek refuge in the galaxies or far off fields, Hinisidan's inspirations are deeply personal, cathartic, and often deeply appreciative of their roots: "The magic three behind 'Bleach Dye Yr Heart' was animal rights, recovering from drug addiction and the joy of being a father. I am now three times a father. My youngest child's name is Sebastian (one of Bleach Dye Yr Heart's most compelling tracks), but the title is also a nod to the Cockney Rebel song from the early 70's," describes Hinsidan's power electronics/laptop mix master "Superjus." Hinsidan's other half is Atish Pare, a multi-instrumentalist who is fluent on everything from bass and electric guitar to drawing magic drones out of his tiny Buddha Machine prepared for maximum effect. Listening to 'Bleach Dye Yr Heart' one hears connections to drone giants Troum, especially in their use of deeply mesemric long tones. And even vocals make their way into the Hinsidan's shapeshifting, but presciently minimalist sound. A deeply emotive croon makes its way into one of the disc's more compelling tracks; evoking a kind of Throbbing Gristle meets Radiohead mutation. This is music with purpose and direction but one that flows naturally in a kind of semiotic revelation.

Superjus captures best what 'Bleach Dye Yr Heart' is all about: "We have finally gotten to the point where darkness, anger and hatred does not do the trick anymore. Now it is time for a clean house. BLEACH DYE YR HEART." Hinsidan which is Swedish slang for "the other side" create sounds of impermanence that tap the highest order of human clarity: Black sky. Rains come and the grass grows by itself. A singular organic entity shimmers in sun light. Spectacular cover and tray card graphics for Bleach Dye Yr Heart were done by genius multimedia artist and friend of GoS Paul McLean of artforhumans.com... (more/buy)
Con_Sense - Compass (Gears of Sand label)

2007. Warm and beautifully mastered ambient with atmospheric beats in the tradition of the very contemporary sound of Monolake infused with other combinations of various Berlin school legends.

"Our music should speak itself and so any personal or private explanations are irrelevant. We don“t want to be superficial and because of this there will be no detailed personal presentation or anything like this. This is not meant to put distance between us and you, but more the attempt of avoiding such superficial information. Our public appearance is "Con_Sense" and only this! Matt Borghi & Ben Fleury-Steiner - What the Night Leaves Behind (Gears of Sand label)
(Price: $12.99)
2007. Two well established craftsmen of ambient atmospherics join forces to create a gorgeous paean to the fleeting night sky.

Slobor media co-owner and accomplished soundsmith Matt Borghi teams up in a long awaited collaborative with Gears of Sand founder, Ben Fleury-Steiner. Both artists have nearly 20 releases between them, but this one posseses a special sublime energy. Indeed, the results speak for themselves: Gorgeous, enveloping drones that reveal a complex array of moods. This is journey music, a mysterious voyage into a harbor of haunting darkness and waking light.... A fitting way to celebrate Gears of Sand's 30th release... (more/buy)

Another new addition to the Hypnos Online Store, actually one that was added before Christmas without much fanfare, but which definitely deserves to be mentioned, as it's a re-issue of a very significant ambient music classic which has been totally unavailable in any format, for a long time.

Aloof Proof - Piano Text (Infraction label)
(Price: $13.99)
2007. Huge praise and back-slaps to Infraction Records, and Aloof Proof, for re-releasing this long-unavailable and impossible to find ambient classic!

Remastered by Michael Fibe (aka Aloof Proof), and issued in a beautiful, deluxe fold-out digipack also designed by Fibe, this is better than just a reissue of a long-lost and much-missed CD recording. It's an improvement on the original release, so even those fortunate enough to own a copy of the 1994 issue on Carbon Base, may want to pick this up.

Shimmering, slow-moving and luscious ambient/drone sounds, sure to please just about anyone shopping here at the Hypnos store. This is two long tracks, just short of an hour long in total.... (more/buy)

Now that our server move (see previous updates) is complete, it will be nice to get back to our usual activities, like making CDs, talking about music, and selling CDs to people who want to listen to them! So, how about we get started listing some new CDs recently added to the Hypnos Online Store?

First, we have two collaborations between Mark Mahoney and M. Peck.

Mark Mahoney & M. Peck - Imprint (Miscellaneous section)
(Price: $11.99)
2006. Incorporating both analog and digital synthesizers, software based instruments and theremin Mahoney and Peck weave deep space and dark ambient soundscapes to sculpt austere visions derived from sound.

Track list (with mp3 sample clips):
1 A Fabled Utopia mp3 clip
2 Initiation mp3 clip
3 Lower Density of Souls mp3 clip
4 Breached Tidal Motion mp3 clip
5 Pathogen mp3 clip
6 Static Migration: a Riddle, a Lament, a Prayer mp3 clip

Mark Mahoney and Michael Peck have compiled tracks from their live performances of 2005. It would be hard to pigeon hole the genre of music that these artists produce. A Mahoney and Peck performance takes the listener through a journey with many twists and turns. An uplifting melodic theme may slowly evolve into an abstract and dark world of strange sounds and textures, only to evolve again into a soft heavenly melodic theme. Mahoney and Peck have performed twice on Chuck van Zyl's radio show, Stars End. They have also performed at the Electro-Music 2005, 2006, and 2007 festivals in Philadelphia as well as the Midwest Electronic Music Symposium (MEMS) in Indianapolis. They have received many positive reviews of their solo work and their previous project, The Amaranth Signal... (more/buy)
Mark Mahoney & M. Peck - The Gallery of Subtle Smiles (Miscellaneous section)
(Price: $11.99)
2007. A curiously crafted balance between the accessible and the mysterious.

The latest installment from Mahoney and Peck, "The Gallery of Subtle Smiles" continues to show the evolving soundworks and audible explorations of this genre defying duo. The Gallery of Subtle Smiles offers much to the listener. Weaving dark tapestries of sound coupled with progressive melodies and rhythms that evoke deep emotinal response. To pass it off as merely ambient music is far to easy as "Gallery" is properly more related to modal jazz then anything perceived as electronic.

Track list (with mp3 sample clips): 1 Flight of the Nexxus Swan mp3 clip / 2nd mp3 clip
2 Cosmic Visitation mp3 clip
3 Initiate Auto Sequence
4 Follow the Swarm
5 Dawn's Lingering Ghost

We're in the process of the final steps of moving the hypnos.com internet domain to a new server. There may be very brief periods during which the site is unavailable but this should be restored soon. Our email service has already been routed to the new server and so email service should be uninterrupted. Thank you for your patience with any unavailability during this time.

The Hypnos Forum move mentioned earlier tonight has been completed. The direct link to the new Hypnos Forum is:
NEW Hypnos Forum direct link

You'll eventually be able to reach the new Forum at the same address that the old one's at now, which is http://www.hypnos.com/smf

Stop on by and take a look around... creating a membership is free, of course.

We hope everyone out there in listening-land had a great holiday season, some time away from work, some good food and drink, and time with friends and family. Now it's a new year, and back to work!

For the last two weeks or so, following on from the aftermath of some technical problems with this web site, we've been taking steps toward moving the hypnos.com web site (including all components such as these main pages, the Hypnos Store, and the Hypnos Forum) to a new web server. This is actually a long and complex process, and it's nearly finished, which means that soon, the final switch will be thrown, and all of you out there in the world who type "www.hypnos.com" into your web browser will be directed toward a new server, though it will mostly look the same from the outside. In fact, it will look so much the same in most respects that it might almost be unworthy of mention, but there are a couple of things worth noting so that nobody is concerned or confused if the web site disappears briefly during the transition. We'd had to have those "oh my gosh, did Hypnos go out of business?" rumors flying around all over the internet!

So, what you need to know is that almost all components of this web site now exist simultaneously on two servers. 100% of you are now seeing the files on the old server, but soon a "switch" will be thrown that direct computers looking for the hypnos.com domain name (directed by something called a "Domain Name Server" in fact) to be pointed toward the new server. Gradually, as this new information or pointer starts to propagate around the internet (since there are millions of Domain Name Servers and they don't all change at the same time), some of you will start to see the new server, and gradually more and more of you will end up on the new server until 100% of you are seeing the new hypnos.com server, and soon after that we'll shut the old one down.

You need to know that the Hypnos Store on the new server looks slightly different from the old one, and it runs on a newer version of the same shopping cart software, but the inventory and prices are exactly the same. You can place your order on whichever of the two stores you like, and it will work exactly the same and arrive to you in exactly the same amount of time. Again, in a week or so, we'll deactivate the old store anyway. So, don't be alarmed if the Hypnos storefront looks a little different all of a sudden, or if the checkout process is different.

Lastly, the one aspect of the Hypnos web site that cannot be run in two different versions simultaneously, is the Hypnos Forum. Because people add postings to that site all the time, the changes are too frequent for us to keep two versions in sync all the time, so tonight (Thursday Jan 03), very soon in fact, the "old" Hypnos Forum will be taken down into "maintenance mode" and the messages and topics and members from that Forum will be magically copied into the "new" Hypnos Forum, and everyone will need to visit the new Forum, even before the rest of the domain transfer is complete.

The direct link to the new Hypnos Forum is:
NEW Hypnos Forum direct link

If you try to access the old Hypnos Forum's address there will be a message there re-directing you to the new Forum address. You'll eventually be able to reach the new Forum at the same address that the old one's at now, which is http://www.hypnos.com/smf -- as soon as www.hypnos.com is updated to point to www.hypnos.com that is. Our apologies if this is confusing to anybody, but we promise it will be worth it in terms of reliability, and additional features and things we'll be able to offer. See you online!
