One more new item for the
Hypnos Store, our first listing from Atheus.

> Atheus – Soundscapes and Drones
(miscellaneous category)
(Price: $9.99)

“Stunning full-length album from Atheus, I have been looking forward to this release ever since the first tentative audio samples appeared via myspace what must be more than twelve months ago now. So here it is, arrived only today and I have played this album through from start to finish three times already, it really is that good. Mysterious, intrusive, threatening ambience, almost drone-like in parts, and sounds totally amazing when adjusted correctly and played very, very loud. Thoroughly mesmerising, I can whole-heartedly say this is one of the most outstanding albums of year and certainly in my top three! Breathtaking.”

We’ve just reduced the price of almost all Umbra & Penumbra label discs , mostly $2-3 less, some as much as $5 lower.

For those who don’t know, Umbra was the label of Italian ambient artist Oophoi, and Umbra gradually branched out to release the work of other artists such as Tau Ceti, Seren Ffordd, Busso de la Lune and several more. Later he started the Penumbra imprint for shorter, EP-length releases in the same nice packaging as the Umbra releases (which come in a roughly 5×8 inch plastic folder with a color-printed folio or card). When Umbra was running at its peak, some of the hottest-selling items our store has ever carried were coming out of this little label, and we’re sorry to see it cease operations. Virtually everything in this part of the store is now out of print, though Oophoi’s own albums will continue to be sold for now.

Jason Kahn & Asher – Vista
(and/OAR category)
(Price: $12.99)
The work on Vista began in the summer of 2006 with recordings made by Asher in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston. Walking through the alleys and side streets he recorded the various mechanical rooms, generators, ventilation systems and idling motors which were to be found there. These recordings were processed and sent to Kahn. Later that fall, Kahn sent Asher several pre-dawn recordings he had made on the shores of Zurich Lake. Asher processed these in keeping with the methods he had used with his own location recordings so as to create continuity among the amassing material. Unprocessed wind recordings made by Kahn in the Swiss Alps in the summer of 2007 comprised the final batch of material used on Vista. Asher and Kahn spent the remainder of that year working on a final mix. Addressing the idea of hearing and seeing out and beyond spatial planes, title Vista references both the aural expanses of Asher’s home on a hill in the town of Somerville and Kahn\’s trips to the Alps and Z√ɬºrich Lake. In processing and mixing the discrete details of a landscape, we hear them from a real physical distance. Through the incidental combinations of processed local sounds and sound materials which are entirely foreign to us, an imaginative aural view is created which obscures any relationship to a documentary account of the original locations recorded for Vista…

The recordings came about as a result of a project instigated in late 1999, which bears witness to a long held fascination with how the environment generates and shapes culture, memory and myth. There was no desire to conduct any scientific or anthropological field work, but to collect a set of recordings which would serve to illustrate how precious the sonic environment can be, and to act as founding materials for a soundscape collection at the British Library Sound Archive. The audio CD also features a PDF of extra photos pertaining to the recordings that can be accessed on a computer, and comes packaged in a four color digipak and a 12 page booklet….

We’re catching up quickly on our release schedule… getting everything done all at the end of the year. Here’s our
latest release on Hypnos Secret Sounds by a newcomer to our group, Mystified.

Artist: Mystified
Title: Primal Mystification
Label: Hypnos Secret Sounds (Ltd CDR)

Mystified - Primal Mystification

2009. Mystified is a pseudonym for Thomas Park, an ambient/electronic
musician who lives in the midwestern USA. He’s been prolific under
the Mystified name as well as the Mister Vapor project, but this is
his first release with Hypnos Secret Sounds. Most recently, Mystified
has collaborated with Nunc Stans on a release “One Thousand
Dreams” on the Dataobscura label, and he has previously collaborated
with Robin Storey (Rapoon) and Nigel Ayers (Nocturnal Emissions).

One of the things we enjoy at Hypnos is helping expose listeners to artists
they may not have heard before, and that includes even artists whose work has been
released widely on a variety of labels. The work of Mystified, while elsewhere
working with more pronounced electronic rhythms, here emphasizes deep, slow-moving
textures. Primal Mystification includes subtle and restrained percussive
elements but is definitely geared toward the listener who loves deep, thick drone work.

Mystified himself says of this recording:
Primal Mystification emerged from drone sounds, similar to the way we humans
emerged from the primordial ooze. Oscillating ambient bell washes were created using
field recordings and mystical effect processes, and then simple rhythmic and melodic
phrases evolved from the primal material. Sometimes there is a change or development
in the rhythmic material, and always there are changes in the drones, behind, as they
shift and flow. Primal Mystification is a musical union of form and formlessness.”

Hypnos Secret Sounds brings you Primal Mystification, our first release by Mystified.

the Hypnos Store.

Kirchenkampf – Babel (2CD)
(diophantine category)
(Price: $15.99, 2CD)
An extremely dynamic and dense work that could generally be classified as experimental dark ambient. The theme here is the Tower of Babel and each disc takes a somewhat different yet complimentary approach: the first (Red Babylon) is generally a rather heavy and intense recording, while the second (Citadel of the Nevermind) is more droney and dream-like. A profound and monumental journey lasting well over two hours. This double-CD release comes packaged in a stunningly printed gatefold sleeve in an edition of 500 copies…

(diophantine category)
(Price: $11.99)
At over 70 minutes, the album consists of two lengthy and picturesque tracks. Both are extremely focused, complex, and dynamic — they evolve, gradually and intricately. Beautiful (yet also melancholy) and abstract, the two pieces are quite distinct from each other in their own respects, yet fit together to form a seamless and monumental overall work. Last week’s podcast update mentioned the new Viridian Sun album coming soon, and it’s finally ready, just
ten years since the last Viridian Sun studio album!

Artist: Viridian Sun
Title: Infinite In All Directions
Label: Hypnos Recordings

2009. Viridian Sun is a duo focusing on abstract improvisation, featuring Hypnos
founder Mike Griffin, and Hypnos solo artist David Tollefson. Their last studio album Perihelion
was released a full decade ago on Hypnos, though VS continued to record together and occasionally
perform live. The new album Infinite In All Directions moves into slightly different sonic material, downplaying synthesizer
electronics in favor of guitar and bass guitar, electronically treated and looped. The result
combines sustained, blissful drones, along with occasionally strange, complex overlapping loops.

For a retrospective of the sound of Viridian Sun, including two tracks from the new album, as well
as rarities and unreleased tracks, listen to the first Hypnos Podcast:
Hypnos Podcast 01.

Those interested may also check out a bit of background on the Hypnos Forum, along with photographs of the recording
sessions, for the new album over the past eighteen months here.

This is the first release on Hypnos featuring our new, simplified packaging. Click
here to see a photograph of the assembled
package, which includes CD and booklet inside a translucent envelope. It should be clarified
that despite the new packaging, Hypnos releases are still proper, manufactured CDs, and not CDRs.
The envelopes are heavy, translucent
recyclable paper, not true vellum (in other words, these are not made from animal skin).

Many Hypnos listeners have asked over the years when we’ll release something new by Viridian Sun, and we now
present an album that may be their best yet: Infinite In All Directions.

Sometimes even for those CDs that are months or years old, we stumble across
reviews that we missed when they first appeared. The CD Fabrications by
M. Griffin was reviewed in Cyclic Defrost magazine, cyclicdefrost.com.

“It took eleven years for Fabrications to appear, having originally
been slated for a 1998 release following Hypnos founder Mike Griffin’s
debut Sudden Dark in 1997. In that period the entire work was reshaped
and reworked several times, being tantalisingly close to appearing yet
never actually emerging.

Griffin’s output of ambient and minimalist compositions on Fabrications
takes sounds captured from field recordings and mixes them all together
across six long length works. Though Griffin takes pride in the fact
that no synthesized or non-acoustic sounds were used in the recording,
it takes only a brief look at the title ‚Ä” Fabrications ‚Ä” to see that
this ethos is somewhat problematic in examining the merits of the
album. By taking all these sounds, be they of running water or late-
night walks, capturing them on record somehow renders them as
imitations of themselves. The sounds are real in that they have
inevitably occurred, but they are copies in the true Walter Benjamin
sense; copies that somehow lose the aura of the original.

Listening to ‘Air Sense Space’ brings this to mind, particularly due to
the mixture of sounds. With the help of the liner notes acting as a
rudimentary guide, lapping waves from the Pacific Ocean in Kona can be
heard, along with the dull and constant ebb of an electrical
transformer. The sounds exist and they feel as if they are completely
believable, but they will always be one step removed from actual
experience. It’s an eerie effect that makes the journey somewhat
uncomfortable, despite the swathes of near-hypnotic ambience that
permeate the recording.

Though the aural space is generally quite sparse, individual segments
throughout the album are very dense. ‘Devise’ certainly feels like one
of these pockets, with its layered, distorted voices gradually building
upon themselves. These “collages,” as Griffin puts it, highlight the
intensity of sensation that he is able to pull out of what would
normally be commonplace sounds. Fabrications manages to create complex
experiences out of copies and triggers sensation from replicas, which
is a commendable achievement.”

Here’s the first release in our Seren Ffordd reissue series, Stellar Nurseries.

Artist: Seren Ffordd
Title: Stellar Nurseries
Label: Hypnos Secret Sounds
hss28, limited cdr edition of 300

Seren Ffordd - Stellar Nurseries

Stellar Nurseries is the first in a series of Seren Ffordd reissues planned to continue over the
coming year or so. These recordings, by an artist whose work is always mysterious and sometimes
ominous, were previously released on the Umbra and Penumbra labels operated (by Hypnos artist Oophoi) out of Italy,
though the artist himself resides in Wales. He first connected with Hypnos on the compilation CD Sounds of a
Universe Overheard
, to which he contributed a track, and Hypnos Secret Sounds released his album
Veils, Shadows.

This recording exhibits a pleasing serenity, a great example
of the artist’s characteristic combination of dark and light
elements into a balanced, deep contrast.

Original sleeve notes, December 2004:
Floating in the depths of space are vast clouds of molecular gases. They drift until disturbed by the dance of gravity. Then, folding in on themselves they spiral in towards the centre, to the forming Starseed. As the disc gets denser and hotter the gases spiral faster and faster, an awesome storm of movement. Faster, denser, hotter until the star ignites, flaming into being. A wave of light and heat flares out into space, pushing the lighter elements before it. The heavier materials left are once more pulled by the bonding of movement and gravity. Held by the dream of the star the planets begin to form in their orbits. Once born the planets spiral round and round creating new notes chords and harmonies.

Stellar Nurseries is a continuous track 1:01:02 in duration, with the following figurative “sections” (with mp3 sample clips):
1. Out of the Void mp3
2. Storm Movement mp3
3. Spiral Dance mp3
4. Floating, Dreaming mp3

Here are a few recent AtmoWorks label releases
on our very own Hypnos Store not yet featured until now, but new, recommended
and very worthwhile!

Vir Unis – The Winter Ghost (CDR-EP)
(AtmoWorks label)
(Price: $11.99 cdr-EP)

2009. 38 minute EP-length release.

From the darkest depths of a winter yet to come, AtmoWorks presents the latest release from owner and founder Vir Unis, “The Winter Ghost”.

Created in the vein of 2007′s “Return of the Locust Queen”, “The Winter Ghost” is a single 38 minute track made up of several distinct parts. From the frozen drones of the opening bars, to angelic voices and detuned piped organs – each individual section blends seamlessly into the next creating an ever-shifting, ever-changing wall of sound.

John describes this piece as a self-reflective journey into the long thoughts that haunt the self in this darkest of seasons. It is an expose into the depth of winter, and the isolation that often accompanies it. Listening, it is easy to imagine St. John of the Cross’ Dark Night of the Soul, where spiritual loneliness and desolation take hold.

Steve Brand – She Covers the Sky (CDR)
(AtmoWorks label)
(Price: $12.99 cdr)
2009. New release from Atmoworks, of which they say:

Once again, Steve Brand emerges from his Mac-based musical cocoon to bring us more of his singular art! AtmoWorks is thrilled to bring you “She Covers the Sky”, Steve’s 5th solo release since the rebirth of the label, and his 9th overall release with us since mid-2008. Steve had this to say about his latest work.

“Early in 2009, I had a recurring idea to make music that was dedicated to honoring the return to Earth of the divine feminine, or goddess energy. Female energy. When I have ideas that keep coming up over and over, as this one did, I never over-analyze them, as they find a way to come to life one way or another.

Central to the idea of the return of the divine feminine, is the idea that about 10,000 years ago there was a shift from matriarchal societies to patriarchal societies. Some say that this shift of emphasis was due to abuses of power during the more matriarchal period, but now the sacred feminine is returning to Earth‚Ä”not to seize power once again, but to restore balance between the two energies.

This album, whose title refers to the Egyptian sky goddess Nuit or Nut, is characterized by subdued melodies, drifting dreamworld keyboard textures, bells, gongs, voice, and sounds from Mother Earth Herself.”

Hands down, Steve Brand is putting out some of the most consistently excellent ambient and atmospheric music on the market today, and “She Covers the Sky” is a spectacular addition to an already outstanding legacy.

The Elf Machine – In Living Stereo & Citizens of the Anthropocene (3 cdr)
(AtmoWorks label)
(Price: $22.99 3-cdr)
2009. Two new “separate but together” releases by The Elf Machine.

CITIZENS OF THE ANTHROPOCENE (1cdr)

Taking nearly three years to complete their follow up to the much critically acclaimed album “I/O”, the elves finally emerged from the studio with “Citizens of the Anthropocene”, the first release in this dual set. This new album takes a journey through the synthetic and over-medicated lives of the current epoch in which we live, the anthropocene. What does it mean to be human and living in this age? All ideologies are political and religion-based and the experience we have in communicating with our political systems is mediated by an entity which was once called journalism and is now a hyper vigilant 24/7 global brain which spews forth bit streams and memes into the collective consciousness which is then consumed and regurgitated as new archetypal forms. What does it mean to live an organic or synthetic life? What is the difference ultimately since all originated from the earth or were produced by organic forms? These were all questions raised by the elves as the explored their inner systems in the dark recesses of their basement studio….

IN LIVING STEREO (2cdrs)

The second release (two discs in itself), which is packaged with “Citizens of the Anthropocene”, is “In Living Stereo”. This album is a collection of three long excerpts from two different live events by The Elf Machine. The first show was in 2004 and was a live internet event hosted by Vir Unis on AtmoStreams. The second show was in 2008 at Illinois Northwestern University’s radio station, 89.3FM WNUR. The set was performed on Phonaut’s late Friday night program. The elves delivered some heavy duty glitch/freeform beatscapes late into the night and the show was captured by Phonaut recording directly to CD, so expect high fidelity recordings on “In Living Stereo”.

2009. The fourth installment of collaborative works between two of our most prolific and creative artists – Dean Richards (aka Disturbed Earth) and Steve Brand. On “The First Day Unnamed”, Dean and Steve have created a brooding and many-layered longform masterpiece. Steve had this to say about the release.

“This album literally grew out of the parts and pieces of my trilogy collaboration with Dean/Disturbed Earth that came out in late 2008 and early 2009. That said, this is not a continuation or regurgitation of those works. In the previous trilogy, Dean took my sounds and twisted, bent and re-sculpted them with his own sensibilities and processes, adding his own sounds into the mix. With “First Day…,” I have re-cycled and re-processed some pieces that Dean created that didn’t make it into the original series, ran them through my own processes and internal filters, adding my own sounds (once again) along the way.
The title was inspired by the idea that we strive to encage and cordon off the world by being able to label and define nearly everything without and within us. In doing so, we create the “known,” when in reality, much remains unknown, because in truth, we have only investigated that which is most comfortable to us. This disk is characterized by deep terrestrial drones and textures, hints of melody, churning subterranean machinery, the occasional calls of weird animals, distant flute, gongs, and voices.”

We recently discovered a new (to us) label called Diophantine Discs, as they released an album by Birds of Tin, a project
that also released a disc recently on Hypnos Secret Sounds. For starters, we have that BoT album Altarwise now
available on the Hypnos Online Store,
and we’ll soon have other items to offer in the
Diophantine area in our store.

Birds of Tin – Altarwise
(New – Diophantine Label category)
(Price: $11.99)
2009. This is the latest release on the interesting (new to us) label discovery, Diophantine Discs, from which
we’ll soon have other items available. The two lengthy tracks of Altarwise were recorded in late 2004 and remastered earlier this year. The first track is a 30-minute experimental work that gradually moves through a wide range of sounds (echoing chimes, mysterious noises, subdued clanking, drones). The second piece is an epic 46-minute composition of deep ambient/drone music that manages to float freely through the listener\’s imagination while keeping his attention.

While many modern day experimental artists have moved on into the computer realm, Birds of Tin has remained true to the experimental sound of tape loops, lo-fi samplers, and collections of unique toy instruments running through small fx boxes. The sound of the work may have become more cohesive and seamless over the years, but the methods have largely remained the same….

More new stuff for the Hypnos Online Store,
this time by the Blue Oasis & Dataobscura label (these are the same entity, by the way — Dataobscura
for cdr releases and Blue Oasis for “pressed” CDs) just arrived.

The Circular Ruins – Before the Colors Deepened
(Blue Oasis/Dataobscura category)
(Price: $13.99)
The music of Before The Colors Deepened drifts between a deep, expansive, and sometimes ominous-sounding, experimental spacemusic, and a more tender, often melancholic, classical style of slowly developing melodic structures and subtle layering. The result is a complex and imaginative series of immersive soundworlds that reward attentive listening, and that will take you on a journey only hinted at in the individual track titles….

Nunc Stans – Meridian
(Blue Oasis/Dataobscura category)

Nunc Stans has always been inspired by far northern landscapes and the subjective states that accompany or are induced by them. Lammergeyer – Beginning To End
(Blue Oasis/Dataobscura category)

Nunc Stans – The Unnamable
(Blue Oasis/Dataobscura category)

Immersive and sonically rich, this release will appeal to listeners of Steve Roach and related deep ambient drone works.\”

More new CDs for sale on the Hypnos Online Store,

which was the solo side project of the late Dani Long (half of Celer, a duo comprised of married couple Will and Dani Long).

Celer – Capri

Chubby Wolf – L’Histoire
(Gears of Sand category)
(Price: $12.99)
2009. “Across eleven meticulously sculpted, wind-chapped, albeit sometimes chilly, pieces, adorned with titles such as Anti-body Library, Inverted Windows, and You, My Luminary, Chubby Wolf demand you close the windows, turn the lights down to a faint dim, and let these potent miasmatic toneshifts waft between the four walls as they insinuate themselves in your subconscious. Like the work of Pauline Oliveros, L’Histoire is an exercise in deep listening, one that makes that demand implicit on its participant. Though all attendant sounds were created with a seeming paucity of means (toy piano, a heart monitor, and the obligatory electronic processing), the ends are justifiably vivid and contemplative, even downright lustrous. The poetic lilt the artist lends to a piece such as Lay the Voice to Rest, Fear Mist is pure sensation, literally and figuratively, supple, if shrill, wisps of sound tendering a bleak landscape. That the artist can render such poignancy out of the barest of electronic materi√©l speaks volumes about how the softest approaches can often yield the most concrete results. Oh, and Chubby Wolf is Dani Baquet-Long, half of drone avatars Celer, which goes some way to explain how these tattered sonic pages uncurl to reveal the argot residing deep within its mysterious L’Histoire.”

We’re sorry to report the passing of long-time Hypnos friend, listener, music reviewer, and supporter,
Jim Brenholts. Jim’s brother Tom posted the information to the Hypnos Forum on Saturday night. I assume Tom will not mind
if I quote his original message here.

This is Jim Brenholts’s brother Tom; I have some sad news.

Our Jim (Rigel Orionis) passed away this evening. I saw that there was an earlier post about his health; thank you all for caring so much.

I don’t have any details yet, the news is less than an hour old. It is hard now; everyone’s cyber life is just as large and just as real as their personal life, and you were his friends, too, whether you met him or only “met” him. If you knew him, know that Jim was very passionate about you. Jim cared. Jim’s wife Linda and I have no idea how large Jim’s reach is on the internet. I’m hoping that this is a start in letting everyone know the sad news.

Music was a huge part of Jim’s life, since we were little kids sharing the same room. His discovery of and subsequent immersion in the world of electronic and ambient music was truly part of who Jim was, and will forever be part of him as long as he is in our hearts and minds. This wasn’t something he did; it is something he was.

Check the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s website for obituary news; we are still in shock, and that is the best way to find out any details about services.

(Edited to add, If there is anywhere else that people need to know, please share the news. It is unfamiliar ground, how to communicate with a loved one’s online life.)

Tom Brenholts

Following Tom’s message, members of our community posted their remembrances to a lengthy and growing discussion
here. Though Jim was primarily known to most as a fan and enthusiast for
ambient music, and as a reviewer, he had more recently begun experimenting with his own recordings, and recently had release music of his own
under the name Rigel Orionis (including Night Heat
on our Hypnos Secret Sound label) as well as collaborations with Stephen Philips, and the ongoing duo with Darren Rogers called Orion’s Belt.

Here’s a picture of Jim Brenholts in Philadelphia (in 2002, second from right), meeting a number of recording artists who may be familiar to visitors of this site. Here from left to right:
Stephen Philips (Dark Duck Records), Jeff Kowal (aka Terra Ambient), Dave Fulton, Mike Griffin (Hypnos), Jim Brenholts, Jeff Pearce

Here is the text of Jim’s obituary from his local newspaper.

BRENHOLTS JAMES L.

On Sunday, October 18, 2009, James L. Brenholts, 53, of North
Versailles. Jim was a Drug and Alcohol Counselor for the Washington
Drug and Alcohol Commission. Loving son of Walter Brenholts and the
late Jeanne Axton Brenholts; beloved husband of Linda Madden
Brenholts; stepfather of David and Michael Madden. He is survived by
sisters, Cathy, Barbara, Mary and Amy and brother, Tom. Jim’s greatest
joy in life were grandsons, Rigel, Willie and Sammy Madden. Jim was a
long-time friend of Bill W. Friends received Tuesday, 2-4 and 6-8pm at
the JAMES F. KUTCH FUNERAL HOMES AND CREMATORY, 433 Lincoln Hwy, Route
30, East McKeesport, PA 15035. Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday,
11am, at St. Robert Bellarmine Church. In lieu of flowers, family
wishes contributions be made to the Carlow Fund.
Send condolences at post-gazette.com/gb

We here at Hypnos, and other members of the Hypnos Forum community, will certainly miss Jim. If you knew Jim and would like to
write something about him, some members of his family are reading the postings to the above-linked topic on the Hypnos Forum.

our store, Malignant.

Collapsar – Beyond the Event Horizon
(malignant category)
(Price: $13.99)
With their debut CD, Beyond The Event Horizon Collapsar transports the listener on an epic journey deep into the cosmos, forging a path across a vast, inky void, and steering a course around a roiling galactic core of hyper-dense stars and black holes. The sound is epic, expansive, and most of all, HEAVY. There is beauty and tranquility within these realms, but there is no light ‚Ä” just massive, pulsating textures coalescing into shimmering drones, rippling sound waves, and billowing, multi-dimensional layers of powerful dark energy…

Phaenon – Submerged
(malignant category)
(Price: $13.99)
Visually and sonically enveloping, this is an album of space and texture, slowly revealing a psychoactive soundscape of majestic, arcing timbres, circadian buzzes, and expansive drones. Heavy, and cosmically weighty in the beginning, Submerged evolves into something more minimalist and serene, radiating a celestial beauty, yet becoming even more bleak and suffocating as it progresses over it‚Äòs 66 minute time frame. Experienced from start to finished, there‚Äôs a palpable sense of drifting and drowning, of being carried away into an endless, interstellar vacuum…

Hyios – Consuetudines
(malignant category)
(Price: $13.99)
7 lengthy compositions of cold ritual drones, arching trajectories, and visceral descents into subterranean caverns, where rich, kinetic textures and deep resonant tones move and morph in a fluid, serpentine fashion, sprinkled with the debris of an ancient culture and something more otherworldly and primordial…

Terra Sancta – Disintegration
(malignant category)
(Price: $13.99)
Disintegration pushes the levels of intensity to new heights, featuring four long and texturally turbulent emissions of formidable power and depth. With it‚Äôs enormous washes of stormy drones and billowing, multi-layered atmospheres, these are tracks that grow and build to such a degree they seem to collapse and erode under their own weight, strewing particles into a vast horizon and creating a broad panorama of ever changing desert colored hues….

Caul & Kirchenkampf – Sleep – Night – Death

A soundscape for late night reflections, full of quiet, whispering drones, cosmic flutterings, arching climatic tones and textures that ascend and descend in a delicate interplay between beauty and bleak desolation….

Eidvlon – Idolatriae
(malignant category)
(Price: $13.99)
7 tracks of ultra bleak, abstract atmospheres, with sounds and textures that seem to seep from catacomb walls and come slithering out of subterranean chambers. Certainly, this can be classified as a dark ambient record, but at it‚Äôs core, it‚Äôs more than just that simple classification. There‚Äôs a gritty, more jagged edge here, with tetonic shifts, deep rumblings, and crackling, climatic squalls buried under a bed of ghostly reverb and haunting tonal resonance…

Aube acquires the sounds of transforming essence… decomposing and recomposing the shape… Fragmenting, expanding, stratifying and elaborating the sonorous matter, constructs complex wafts, resounding weaves carpets, interlaces thin threads of metallic tensions, crumbles and agglomerates acoustic particles, leaves to flowing, reverberating, harmonic drones….

Aube – Le Syndrome Aquatique (2CD)
(silentes category)
(Price: $16.99)
\ This is the long awaited reissue of one of the best Aube works originally titled AQUA SYNDROME, published about 10 years ago by MANIFOLD records. The new reissue includes the original album with a bonus track and a bonus live CD. LE SYNDROME AQUATIQUE is an impressive job of deconstruction and resetting of sonorous material to the work of Aube, this particularly extended in the duration, treaty and expanded time, much to be proposed in a rich edition in double CD. Aube puts molding on and models fragments of concrete sounds of aquatic derivation transforming them in unknown drones, noises, pads, loops, rhythms and mechanics, constructing a fantastic sonorous tapestry of valuable invoice and incredible impact…

Aube – Reworks Nimh Vol. 1
(silentes category)
(Price: $13.99)
Ethnic-electronic sound sources transfigured and remodeled into completely new sonic lifeforms with state-of-the-art audio processing algorithms. Residual fragments of the original sound-sources occasionally appear in the mix like aquatic fauna swimming to the surface for a brief second. A magnum opus in four movements. Intensely fascinating work by the unparalleled master of experimental sound design. AUBE is peerless. A minimal mosaic of sound that takes the listener on a slow-motion expedition into the very fabric of tone. A ocean of sound-grains for the listened to swim in. Spoken language doesn\’t (yet) contain words that properly describe these sounds… an absolute must have for the experimental music devotee…

Nimh – The Unkept Secrets
(silentes category)
(Price: $13.99)
\ After few months of distance from the escape of The Missing Tapes and the relative Rework by Aube, Nimh (Giuseppe Verticchio) sets aside the ethnic-lysergic visions that have characterized the previous album and continues along the distance of sonorous search and fascinating experimentation electronic, already undertaken with works such as The Impossible Days and Subterranean Thoughts. Nimh expands the range of sounds and instruments, revealing his own secrets through a new, dark but stylistically unclassifiable CD, in which he arranges with extraordinary originality and in an absolutely personal way elements of drone music, dark ambient, electronics, ritual, ethnic, field recordings, enriching every track with the recurrent presence of evocative sounds of electric guitar in varied filtered and elaborated way…

Stratospheric sounds from another dimension, where multi-cultural sound-worlds collide. Processed electronic emulations of traditional Thai (and other indigenous) instruments, esoteric percussion, breathing, drones, feedback, shortwave radio, disembodied voices floating in air, and hazy field recordings all combine is a most intoxicating manner. With THE MISSING TAPES, NIMH returns to a more adventurous style, pushing the boundaries of sonic innovation past anything that we\’ve heard before. Nimh / Nefelheim – Whispers from the Ashes

Ideally inspired by the Inquisition era, like some titles of the tracks may suggest, Whispers from the Ashes presents Nimh (Giuseppe Verticchio) and Nefelheim joined together for the production of a dark oriented CD that alternates obscure and haunting atmospheres with more gloomy and sometimes dramatic and highly evocative episodes… In a blend of low frequencies, metallic sounds, echoes of distant voices and human screams, whispers, concrete noises, ritual processions, suddenly an acoustic guitar chord, some reverberate piano notes, the sound of falling rain, bits of thundering percussions emerge… Like in a disquieting voyage to a far away past, in a stakes and witches age, featuring persecutions of heretics and superstition…..

Review by Auralpressure.com:
“a heady blend of music so full of love and the lust for life that the joy it brings is unsurpassable. The drifting sweeping passages brings forth a message of hope and joy in these darkened times of unrest and uncertainty. A simple drum beat is forged through the layers of iridescent patterns of electronic waves creating the ultimate dreamscapes in which to lose oneself. Journeying onward you encounter subtle drones and shaman chants that take you into another dimension freeing the burdened soul. Every one of the nineteen tracks are so varied and different in their execution and yet they meld together seamlessly into one complete portion of music that eludes description.”…

We’re catching up a bit on our backlog of pending releases, and are proud to announce The Phantom Light by Matt Borghi.

Artist: Matt Borghi
Title: The Phantom Light
Label: Hypnos Secret Sounds (Ltd CDR)

Matt Borghi - The Phantom Light

2009. The Phantom Light is the third release in our Matt Borghi reissue series. Originally issued in an edition of only 30 copies in 2006,
this Hypnos Secret Sounds reissue will be the first opportunity for this recording to be heard by most Borghi listeners. The four long pieces
exhibit Borghi’s characteristic simplicity and restraint.

Matt says:
The Phantom Light is a work that?s comprised four compositions with titles derived from some of the most remote lighthouses on the northern Great Lakes.

The works are inspired by sailor?s tales of being adrift on The Great Lakes during storms, and catastrophic weather. Sailors, looking out on the horizon for a sign of life, a light of hope, aimed their ships towards the safety of these phantom lighthouses hoping to get to a safe harbor. Often times these phantom lighthouses just lead to a rocky shoal and a watery death. These ?phantom? lights have been a thing of myth for as long as The Great Lakes freshwater seas have been sailed.

In many ways, The Phantom Light is a sequel to Huronic Minor, as Great Lakes lore, and Matt Borghi?s own experiences on The Great Lakes were the creative impetus for this work.

In the process of combing through various CD reviews I’ve saved, but just now started to post
to this page, I also found an interesting online feature that mentions Hypnos, and may be of
interest to those who follow ambient & related music styles. It’s on the textura.org web site
and it’s their list of ten favorite record labels for 2008 (yes, I’ve had this sitting here for more than
half a year), with a bit of info on each. Learn more about some of your favorite labels, or
perhaps discover some new music outlets to explore.

Ten Favourite Labels of 2008
feature on textura.org

They’re in alphabetical order, so Hypnos is about halfway down, though I’d like to think Hypnos
was meant to be number one! Seriously, thanks to textura.org for this honor.

Another installment catching up with reviews of Hypnos and HSS and (as in this case) Binary sub-label releases.
Today it’s Saul Stokes with Villa Galaxia and there are quite a few of them (a few of which may have been posted before).

Saul Stokes - Villa Galaxia

“With Villa Galaxia, Saul Stokes has realized the most playful recording of his career: springy in step and lactating purple, it even mischievously tugs at the fringes of (god help us) ?electropop?. But don?t get too alarmed: this is a marvelously vibrant, engaging work of contemporary electronica that finds Stokes charting unexplored territory with his usual idiosyncratic gusto. Outerspace music, rendering the covers of antiquarian sci-fi mags Astounding and Fantastic in glorious harmonicolor, Stokes?s sonic bric-a-brac would find favor from those whose collections sport Bill Nelson as well as early Morr sides and magic fealties long ago forged by IDMistic platterpusses Aphex Twin or Bochum Welt. But Stokes is a true original, a savvy composer who refuses to merely tweak paradigms, boost plug-in ratios or jump to Warp nine with his controls locked to the heart of the sun. The sheer joviality of this recording is impossible to shake?like the spaceage art nouveau so relished by his colleague, Stokes goes back to the future encumbered in a cozy full Nelson. Other folks subconsciously flavor the stew as well: ?Hello Radar? works Mouse on Mars rubberband rhythm-snaps into a gaseous Stokes configuration that pops and bubbles like the most exotic Stereolab experiments. ?Vapor Trails? revels wholeheartedly in its old-school moog refrains and bleep coagulant. ?Eta Car Is a Massive Star? (Stokes’ gift for titular designation improves on each successive recording like a fine vintage) explodes in a frenzy of jocular snares, boiling beaker beeps and candystriped synths. And the beat/tone clusters perambulating through ?Interrupted by Time? mandates tripping to the moon on (synthetic) gossamer wings, the artist smitten by his digital crushes, noises that fizz, fuzz, and fan out in equal measure, charged by headspinning rhythms agog in zero gravity. Quark strangeness and charm, Stoked by stardust.”

“Saul Stokes makes a welcome return to Hypnos on their Binary sublabel with Villa Galaxia. First, mention must be made of the exceptional cover art, simple but effective in its use of colors, shapes, lines, and texture. Come to think of it, that?s exactly what Stokes is able to do with sound. He shapes and colors it to his liking, creating tracks like concise complex sonic puzzles. ?Hello Radar? is irresistibly catchy, from the electronic sounds to the complex rhythms to the hints of static and distortion that give it just the right edge to avoid being just a bit too cute. If there were musical justice in the world, either this or ?Vapor Trails? would be a hit single, it they have all the makings of one except that the public at large seems unable to handle instrumentals. The shuffling bass and beat of the latter number are very cool. ?Blaze? takes me back to older Stokes classics like ?First Jump? on Zo Pilots with its quirky beat and hip synthesizer sensibility. Trademark punchy percussion gets ?Night Painting? started, and it builds from there. The most fun, both in name and in sound, is the playful ?Eta Car is a Massive Star,? although it makes an abrupt surprising turn midway through. The emphasis throughout Villa Galaxia is on bright tones and colors, carefully put together into neat little packages. No need to put a calling card on each one indicating who they are from; they are thoroughly, unabashedly Stokes.”

“This CD 2008 offers 56 minutes of bouncy electronic music.

Haunting electronics combine with percussion to generate tuneage of a relaxing nature tinged with an edge of peppy vitality. Stokes? style of using unconventional sound is in high fashion with this release, offering the listener a wide variety of strangeness harnessed to produce songs that reach beyond that weirdness to deliver pleasantly bouncy melodies.

Diversely squeaky sounds are delivered in rapid-fire succession and then molded into melodies of strikingly peaceful disposition. This contrast holds much appeal: generating appealing tuneage from a selection of quirky sounds. Using keyboards and looping techniques, Stokes produces sinuous riffs that glisten like alien honey.

The electronics are utilized more as frontal threads with minimal textural foundations, relying on layering these lead tracks to accomplish fluid cohesion. Generally guided by keyboards, the notes are conventionally delivered in a melodic structure.

The percussion used on this album exhibits a strange organic quality despite its obvious artificial generation. The beats are often muted as if swaddled in an electrified gauze. Again, Stokes? self-made gear produces source sounds that are highly different, resulting in the tempos defying normal classification–again, a major reason for their esoteric allure.

The presence of processed guitar adds a delightful edge to a few tracks, their buzzy chords settling nicely into the mix.

A bevy of odd sounds propel the music, but their application repudiates their oddness. These compositions achieve a remarkable accessibility with their dreamy intentions and lively execution.”

“In another time, say the 1950s or 60s, Saul Stokes might have been considered an experimental composer,
constructing his own instruments, creating random events, bypassing conventional musical form. But rarely
has an experimental composer made music as haunting and soulful as that heard on his new CD, Villa Galaxia.

Saul Stokes has certainly recorded his share of abstract electronic music. He even has an album called
Abstraction. But on albums like his new CD, Villa Galaxia, he reins in his sonic experiments, welding them
together with his controllers and computers, building structure out of chaos, and resolving it all in music
that shares a Mobyesque sense of melancholy.

Along with Brian Eno, Saul Stokes composed music for the video game Spore. As you listen to Villa Galaxia
you might feel like you?re inside one of those games in a kinetic ride of pings and zings, surging chords
and exploding timbres that carry you through each scene. It?s a sound that expands beyond the confines of
the computer screen into a cinema of the mind.

Fans of William Orbit, Ulrich Schnauss and Boards of Canada should find resonance in the music of Saul
Stokes. His latest album is Villa Galaxia. This has been an Echo Location, Soundings for New Music.”

Time to catch up again on recent reviews of Hypnos and HSS releases.
Today it’s The Glittering Domain by Deepspace

Deepspace - The Glittering Domain

“What you are about to hear on this “exclusive(!)” disc is simply amazing!. All eight pieces here are very well structured and has all the elements that a true Ambient/Space CD should have. You will be immersed by mesmerizing sounds that will take you to places you never thought existed, until now.
The music itself is very similar to the previous albums by *”Deepspace”* and will continue to evoke very abstract, minimalistic and isolated moments through all the tracks, but there is alo a strong sense of pure space music if you study/listen carefully, sometimes it sounds a bit like *’Between Interval’*.
I quote someone else on the following line —> “It’s Lush, exquisite, flawless, refined, striking, & beautiful”. I couldn’t have said it better myself in the case of this CD. It really is a journey through space & time that has to be experienced.
So far, this is definetely the CD of the year/month, and also my all time favourite space music CD in Electronic music. This is a masterpiece, and also a must have disc for fans of *Vidna Obmana, Numina & Robert Rich*.
Very well done, Mirko Ruckels!”

“Darkened Soul is a project of Mike Soucy, and Bathys is his second solo album of dark ambient music after a release on Umbra, the Italian ambient artist
O?phoi’s label. Soucy presents six tracks with Greek titles, all amorphous drones with an emphasis on low frequencies, drenched in reverb. The album
title means “deep” in Greek, and it is an appropriate image for the music. Between the low frequencies and the vast distances implied by the echoes, the
album conjures up subterranean and sub aquatic images, deep underground caverns of indeterminate proportions. While most of the album contains
sounds with a wide harmonic spectrum, almost approaching white noise, Soucy also occasionally and discreetly mixes in sharp and precise sounds.
On the title track he adds a metallic arhythmic hammering sound that adds to the infernal atmospheres, and on Ateleiotos Agkareia (Endless Labor) there
are sounds like a large metal object dragged across a stone floor. Apart from a couple of insignificant and infrequent loops, melodies are hard to spot on
this album, where the primary focus is on changes in texture, with rumbles and sudden sonic blasts providing variation. The individual pieces have their
own characteristics, but the listener joins them for a time as works in progress, little snapshots of the eternal sounds.

Newly added to the Hypnos Online Store, new stuff from the always-popular
Steve Roach.

Steve Roach – Dynamic Stillness (2CD)
(Projekt category)
(Price: $16.99, 2CD)
2009. Great new 2CD release by Steve Roach.

“Dynamic Stillness presents ambient-electronic pioneer Steve Roach in the deep end of the pure atmospheric, rhythmless soundscape genre. Across the 2-CD release, amorphous shifting sonics glide in a phenomenal flow, highly cohesive and yet ever-changing. Dynamic stillness indeed! These eight long-form tracks (140 minutes in all) undulate softly and slowly, radiating light even as darkness hovers along the edges. It‚Äôs an album of subtle pieces, more often than not with emphasis on the stillness as opposed to the dynamics. Disc two‚Äôs closing Canyon Stillness plays like a dark inversion of Structures From Silence. A cold breeze blows through it all like a black mist. After so much softness it makes for a surprisingly chilling, engaging finish.”

The next batch of recent AtmoWorks CDR releases have now been added.

Steve Brand/Ishq – Spiritual Science / The Voice from Home (double-cdr)
(AtmoWorks category)
(Price: $19.99, double-cdr)
2009. A great new 2-disc collaboration between the recently-prolific
Steve Brand, and Ishq (aka Matt Hillier).

AtmoWorks says:
AtmoWorks is thrilled to offer a two disc collaboration between AW veteran Steve Brand and electronic music mainstay Matt Hiller (aka Ishq).
Steve had this to say about the releases, and how they found their way into reality.

‘I’ve been an Ishq fan for about 3-4 years now, as well as all the other mutations, Elve, and Colourform. I found his work as part of my
complete indulgence in the Ultimae label, when Ishq kept showing up in the “If you like this, you’ll like this” area. I bought “Orchid” and was
hooked. I immediately loved his delicate atmospheres and unique beats, his intuitive and spiritual approach to music, which really felt like
home to me. We share a common belief in the healing nature of sound, which we both weave into our work. At the time, Matt offered several
free downloads of loops, so I used a few in a longform piece I was/am working on called, “Pale Blue Orb.” I sent Matt a copy and he responded
with a very nice email. I decided at that moment, just to ask if we was interested in a collaboration. A few weeks later I was thrilled to receive an
entire DVD of unique material in the mail from Cornwall England, and here we are. Effortless and organic.

I considered releasing these as two separate albums, but I really feel that they are companion pieces that augment one another, almost needing
to be heard together. These disks are a very nice co-mingling of the Ishq sound and mine own. Probably a bit murkier and darker than Ishq, but
you can still very much hear the Ishq-ness within the sounds, along with my own treatments and personal aesthetics. Disk 1, “Spiritual Science”
consists of 3 long tracks of vaporous atmospheres and spaces. Disk 2, “The Voice From Home” is longform drifting, lilting, diaphanous
soundscape that times in at just over 50 minutes, meant for low-volume repeated play.’

From our perspective, this is simply a brilliant combination of styles and textures – taking the very best of each of these accomplished artists’
talents and blending them together into something wholly new and wonderful.

2009. AtmoWorks is proud to present “Withered Leaves”, the debut release from our newest recording artist Pixyblink.
With her first AtmoWorks release, Pixyblink (aka Kyra) has produced a deep experimental journey through field recordings, stark synthetic landscapes and spoken word performance. The result is a new and exciting blend of many different musical styles and artistic influences; a fusion of the old into something wholly new. With her unique blend of atmospheric drones, synthesized vocals and random beats, Pixyblink carves out new territory with each release and explores the possibilities of sound with an almost child-like enthusiasm. From the artist herself:

“On pixyblink?s sophomore album, we take a deeper look into her psyche as it is translated into music. The elements found there can range from enchanting to disturbing to blissful. Processed vocals, spoken word and deep, organic atmospherics meld together on a 43 minutes train ride through some of the less traveled levels of Wonderland. Kyra had this to say about “Cinder”.

‘”cinder” is the 3rd release from pixyblink, offering another dose of
dark ambient and eldritch-like vocalizations. she’ll take you into
journeys that are completely foreign to everyone, and even to herself
on some of the selections. transporting you elsewhere is the key, from
deep into catacombs, flowing with the tranquil ocean and shooting past
vibrant stars. there’s also a flirtation with a bit of light-heartedness on a few of the tracks, but handled with pixyblink’s own distinct approach. there are 10 tracks for the listener to get lost in, as miss pixy guides you through a wholly unique listening experience’ …

Pixyblink – Flameless Lantern (cdr)
(AtmoWorks category)
(Price: $12.99 cdr)
2009. Kyra is back once more with her fourth Pixyblink release on AtmoWorks in 2009. This latest body of work, entitled “Flameless Lantern” picks up where “Cinder” left off, and carries you along deeper paths of mystery and mayhem. Kyra had this to say about the new album.

“on ‘flameless lantern’, ms. pixy once again whisks her listeners away from things that are normal, to a plane of unknowns. the album begins with a sugar-laced dip into a honey pot with a thick dose of shoegazer. from there, it’s a shift into curious dark deeds, unnatural tales of delight and highly magnified introspection. the tones roll softly into the mind, but one must be aware that some of them are sweetly poisoned. as the artist would tell you herself, she doesn’t consider this an album, but rather dreams and forgotten thoughts translated into sound”

Fans of Kyra’s earlier works will find plenty to love in this new set, and first timers…well, let’s just say that this is as good an intro to the weird and wonderful world of Pixyblink you’re likely to find…

We’re pleased to now offer CDs from the Stellar Auditorium label in our Hypnos Online Store. It’s a relatively new label, so they don’t have a large
number of releases yet, but this label — based in Greece – bears watching.

Underjordiska / Spectral Lore
(Stellar Auditorium category)
(Price: $14.99)
\”This split is a collaboration far different from your typical let\’s throw some left-outs from our previous records, make a intro or two and off to the printing plant mentality, instead being a concept split album which should be heard as one, rather than two albums on the same cd. It is a journey from the surface of the sea to the very depths of the ocean, and then back towards the surface again. Each musician undertakes one part of the journey; two compositions over 30 minutes, featuring actual underwater recordings, aquatic drones, unique instruments (from a mandolin to a duduk) and even melodic post rockish moments. There is a continual flow of movement to the music, as the listener, embodied within this audial environment, descents and ascends through the ocean, towards a deepest point that seems to bear a particular significance: but is it the goal, or the journey itself that matters more? \”

Saltwater and Glassmoon is about the depths of the sea, and its sounds illustrate a drowned orchestra performing large, adagio movements from within the deep, dark ocean. According to the words of the man himself, Deep and slow December ambience; kelp forest orchestral reveries filled to the brim with rich Pacific longing. Sempervirens – Dirge of the Dying Year
(Stellar Auditorium category)

\”Dirge Of The Dying Year uncovers eight realms filled with unfettered beauty and pure thought, eight worlds stretching out as the eight fatal directions of the compass, all engulfed under an insatiable fog. Somewhere between Biosphere\’s Substrata, Northaunt\’s Barren Land and the early recordings of Brian Eno, Dirge… is the last and most mature recording of the Sempervirens catalogue, and a promise to far greater things in the future. Few individuals have mastered the art of soundscaping to a similar degree to the Estonian ambient artist Margus Mets, aka Sempervirens. His, largely unreleased, output of 6 full length albums and numerous other uncompiled material has been an exemplary effort to create soundworlds where boundaries are only set by the imagination of the artist, and where field recordings, deep drones, distant transmissions of some classical music broadcast, or even acoustic guitar breakdowns are found under precise multi-layering , flowing seamlessly as if they were never separate in the first place.\”

Gert Emmens – The Nearest Faraway Place Vol. 1

\”This album consists of basic material prepared by Gert for his live performance at the Gasometer in Oberhausen, Germany. The tracks are named simply Part 1 through 7 which is a tradition of sorts for EM records. Create – In the Blink of an Eye
(groove category)
(Price: $13.99)
\”Peaceful electronics are laced with gutsier enhancements. Fundamental drones serve as an ethereal substructure for more demonstrative melodics. Surging loops emerge to season the flow with vigorous locomotion. An astral density is achieved and then bolstered by additional layers of nimble-fingered keyboard patterns. Fanciful diversions appear with regularity, keeping the music entertaining and lively. The electronics resound with deep intonations, delivering an oomph that is never murky. Meanwhile, this heaviness is countered by the resolute presence of more fanciful pitches that provide a pleasant propulsion. The union of these elements establishes a rich panorama that is flavored with glittering cosmic augmentations. While most of the tracks feature no percussion, the cyclic application of strident sounds provides a suitable rhythmic presence. In one piece, the faux rhythms achieve a startling vitality; while in another song, softly chugging beats establish an amiable tempo. These compositions employ a slow-building structure, starting out as tenuous harmonics which steadily evolve into pastiches of zealous vitality. A sense of growth is accomplished through the constant expansion of melodies, yet the music rarely has any urgency, with each escalation flowing naturally and unhurried. A strong air of expectancy is generated as the intertwining riffs compound into thrilling configurations that shimmer with puissance and optimism.\”

Also there are interesting electronic textures and even meditative sonic passages. In a few words, this is a work that will enthusiasm the aficionados to Space Music and Ambient in general.\”

\”Those who love rather complex and dynamic sequencer music with an acoustic edge and an occasional high-tech feel should check out the music Paul Ellis\’ has put down on his amazing album Last Hiding Place of Beauty. The cd contains four long tracks, all making a powerful, straightforward statement, keenly melting vibrating sequencer patterns, fx\’s, and a wide range of vintage flavored synthesizer textures such as Mellotron flute. As said previously, the overall structure is rather complex, although lots of space is found within the core of every piece of music. The great interplay between bass grooves, drums, electronic and acoustic instruments is quite mind blowing, especially on the 16-minute title track. The overall outcome is simply breathing the joy of honest electronics more than once.\”

\”Craig Padilla and Skip Murphy have made in this work a kind of space electronic music which turns out to be emotional and enigmatic. Inspired by the analogic sonority, they have composed a series of themes that will no doubt attract the lovers of the purest line of Space Music. The structure of Analog Destination consists of diffused melodies that come and go, floating environments that surround these melodies, powerful sequencers, and sound effects that in some passages are an important part of the ambiance. There also are moments of experimentation, yet always keeping to the most melodic aspects of the music.\”

Ron Boots – Beyond the Boundaries of Twilight
(Groove category)
(Price: $13.99)
\”Musician Ron Boots did several planetarium concerts in the past seven years or so, but it never came to a cd-release. Beyond the Boundaries of Twilight, released at Ron‚Äôs Planetarium concert in Bochum, Germany on May 24, fills this gap, offering 71 minutes of both atmospheric and dynamic but always captivating music. The background of the conceptual music is told by Ron on the second piece The Story. Although almost all music on the album is made by Ron, the encompassing music at times is complimented by some great guitar parts by Frank Dorittke (aka F.D. Project).\”

We love the music of Loren Nerell and here’s a release of Loren’s we’ve just added to the store for the first time.

Loren Nerell – Indonesian Soundscapes
(soleilmoon category)
(Price: $8.99)

“Ethnomusicologist Loren Nerell has spent time abroad studying gamelan music of Bali and Java, and relives the visit with this recorded account. A definite documentary feel accompanies Indonesian Soundscapes, though it can certainly be listened to ambiently, effectively bringing another world into your home environs. Actual field recordings document musical ceremonies, natural sounds and locational atmospheres, making for an enveloping sonic travelogue.\”

Another new one… the latest from Lustmord

Lustmord – [The Dark Places of the Earth]
(lustmord category)
(Price: $16.99)
2009. Latest from Lustmord, which will probably have greater appeal to his traditional fans than some of his
“different direction” releases of recent years.

“New and limited edition CD by Lustmord, who, compared to the recent Other and Metavoid, goes back to his uber
atmospheric roots and purely soundscapish tracks. No guitars or epic build ups at all this time, but a come back to the very deep and
bassy long ambiances of The Place where the Black Stars Hang or Heresy (minus the voices). As usual, the production is flawless, the
tracks are amazingly profound, and this is extremely recommended.”

Here’s a special new item just arrived at the Hypnos store, a limited edition, hand-assembled disc in a wood case featuring the music of one of
our favorite artists, Saul Stokes. Previously this disc has been available for sale only at Saul’s recent performance in Philadelphia, or directly from
Saul himself, and we are pleased to offer this to Hypnos customers.

Saul Stokes – Metacollage
(Saul Stokes category)
(Price: $24.99)
2009. Stokes’s latest creation Metacollage forges an original path of new era electronic composition. Fluttering organic forms of
electronics create the backdrop to carefully composed, beautifully arranged music. Darren Bergstein of E/I online magazine writes: He more or less
provides the reasons why electronic music probably fascinates most of us: unheard-of sounds rendered flesh and set within new contexts that
refuse to simply tow idm/ambient/what-have-you lines. Metacollage is packaged in a collector\’s edition wood case designed by Stokes. The Metacollage
logo is stamped using a special Japanese archival ink. Each CD comes with a signed satin finished interior info card. The interior of the CD case is
felt lined and protects the cd from scratches…

Next up in the “newly added to the Hypnos store” updates list, a selection of new items from Faria, a relatively new but very prolific
label out of Russia.

c.j. mind & man ufo (eXperiment) – Source
(faria category)
(Price: $13.99)
2008. If you like music of Steve Roach – you will like this too! The natural beginning of all life on the Earth intertwines with
estrangement pressing on the person the incomprehensible power of an external world (space). Too extraneous and severe really to be a
monastery of each of us, as if a mourning bed-sheet swallowed light. In this contradiction, someone finds something attractive for search of the
external forms not similar to ours, but probably forgets that its house, a family and surrounding close friends as anybody another is important to him.
And being behind an understanding side, and remains not untangled ball drawing to only when on it is unique a question exciting you to you by all
means (here and now) it is necessary to receive it is unique a right answer. Stay in a womb, a birth, individual search of sense of existence,
leaving in the other world. Spring (awakening) before fading in a cold twilight of mature autumn (death). All is marvelously simple. After all the,
Nature does not suffer intervention in its nature. When it exists without our presence ? flows and sounds absolutely other light. But the Creator
comes and by a wave of an invisible conductor’s baton twists a surprising pattern on beauty, in which the voice of a far-far star is audible. The
teamwork purpose (the present album) consisted, first of all, in desire to grope some integrity of a universe and attempt to find room for this
perception in presented on seventy five minutes of a music material. Limited edition of 500 pieces, FAR-24…

Faryus – Night Forest Reality
(faria category)
(Price: $13.99)
2008. Night Forest Reality describes a world which does not exist in daylight, arising when the last dying beam of sunshine fades from dark shaggy branches of old trees, when air becomes damp and hearing sharpens. A constant feeling of someone\’s presence borders the periphery. From the impenetrable darkness in the heart of the wood, a cool wind forces leaves to tremble, hardly distinguishable in the twilight. It only imparts its vibration and a touch of cold air to the face, a suggestion of swaying branches, sparkling streams and the rustle of revived grass. Dew drops barely sparkle in the gloom, reflecting the stars blinking in bottomless moonless depth. The night wood, frightening and attracting, living an invisible life, populated by unfamiliar ancient beings. Almost nothing visible in the impenetrable darkness, but exposing its mysteries via sounds of the unseen, of that which should not be seen….

and fashion an album of 4 interconnected and complementary tracks that somehow look both forward and back; that juxtapose the old and the new into an organic whole of both
sacred and temporal instruments – Indian harmonium and shruti box, plucked and hammered dulcimers, bodhrans, mosenos, various flageolets, synthesisers and keyboards, guitars, bass,
Tibetan bells and singing bowls – 4 drifting shards of ethereal and sometimes frightening beauty, rose petals on the snow that are finally revealed to be tiny, perfect drops of crystalline blood….

We’re proud to announce our first new release of the year, our second-ever release by Steve Brand.

Artist: Steve Brand
Title: Children of Alcyone
Label: Hypnos Secret Sounds (Ltd CDR)

Steve Brand - Children of Alcyone

2009. The second release by Steve Brand on our Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint, Children of Alcyone
demonstrates the characteristic otherworldly quality of the artist’s best work. Generally quite simple, at times
singlemindedly minimal, this work is nonetheless possessed of a depth and complexity that are revealed upon
repeated listening. Stretched-out drone structures combine with subtle tribal/ethnic elements to create very
effective atmospheres for almost hypnotic relaxation.

Though we’re tempted to call Brand one of our favorite “new” artists, in fact he has been
active as a recording artist for quite some time, having released many recordings under the name Augur, along
with a handful of solo and collaborative works under his own name this past year.

Steve Brand says:
“The inspiring energy for Children of Alcyone was/is the books of Barbara Marciniak. Marciniak’s books are said to be channeled information from the
Pleiadians, our distant multi-dimensional ancestors from the Pleiades constellation. (Alcyone is the name of the “central sun” of this constellation.) Upon being
introduced to these books, I was immediately taken by their wit and irreverence, the nearly unfathomable timeline of events, and their uncanny relevance to
things that are currently taking place here on Earth (the first of these books were channeled in the early 90′s).

The initial sound sketches for “Children” were begun in September of 2007 in the tidal wave of energy that was Steve Roach’s “Into the SoundCurrent” masters’
class, and elaborated upon, refined, and re-energized over the intervening 3 years in my own studio. The result is a sometimes murky, sometimes soothing,
sometimes phantasmagorical series of excursions through multiple timelines, and myriad possible half lit universes that other versions of ourselves inhabit.

My friend, and frequent collaborator, Jonathan Benham, not only created the art for this disk, but contributed energy and sounds to a couple of tracks with
his array of homemade instruments during a series of improvisations between he and myself captured at my studio.”

Track listing, with mp3 sample clips:
1. Golden Cloud – (08:17) – mp3 clip
2. Light Age – (22:51) – mp3 clip
3. Outside the Grid of Time – (17:15) – mp3 clip

It was always our intention to lower the price of Vidna Obmana’s An Opera for Four Fusion Works series once
the final act was released. Not only have we cut the price on the “Acts 1-4″ package from $41.99 to $34.99, we’ve also
slightly reduced the individual disc prices, for those of you who have purchased part of the series, but not all.

For those unfamiliar with this Vidna Obmana “series” release, each “Act” involved a collaboration between Vidna Obmana
and a different recording artist, and was released separately. “Act 1″ was a single-disc release, but packaged in a 4-CD
case designed to hold all four Acts together. Acts 2, 3 and 4 were released in a paper sleeve with a booklet, to be inserted
in the Act 1 case (or, of course, they fit into a standard CD case if you prefer not to buy Act 1)

Act 1 featuring Dreams in Exile, $10.99 (more/buy)

Act 2 featuring Bill Fox, $9.99 (more/buy)

Act 3 featuring Kenneth Kirschner, $9.99 (more/buy)

Act 4 featuring Steven Wilson, $9.99 (more/buy)

(Price: $12.99 cdr)
2008. Steve Brand returns with his second AtmoWorks release, following up on the success of “SoulSpiral”. His new release, “Because We Were Once Covered In Gold”, is a 5-part journey through some of the most moving and subtly-textured ambient to date. Steve had this to say about the new release:

“‘Because We Were Once Covered In Gold’ was created about the same time as my album, “Bridge to Nowhere,” and both were inspired by channeled material I was reading at the time. The
gyst of that material is that our natural state is that of masters of a unimaginable number of realms and selves, and that we are in fact, limitless and empowered multidimensional beings, only
temporarily encased in flesh and bone. Through the channels, these beings recalled long forgotten civilizations, planets and cultures far grander and creatively rich than ancient Greece or
Egypt. I began to get a real sense of the depth of time, of place and of feeling that I wanted to convey and recreate in music. There were times when working on ‘Because We Were Once
Covered In Gold’ that I sat back and listened to what I had done (or what came through me) and thought, ‘When did I do that? WHO did that?’ Created almost entirely of keyboard textures,
only occasionally punctuated with bells and natural sounds, this album is meant to be a key for journeying, rediscovering and connection.”

Peter James – Is (cdr)
(AtmoWorks category)
(Price: $12.99 cdr)
2008. In Peter James words: The original idea behind the recording of ‘is’ was to create an album using only very limited instrumentation, mainly bass guitar,
and electric guitar — no synthesisers were used to make this album, only samples and loops made from bass and guitar work I had recorded in my studio. Often I would record an
hours worth of stuff, only to come out of the session with maybe a minutes worth, or less, of useful sounds. It was recorded between june 2007 and july 2008. It wasn’t an easy
journey. And that’s reflected in the overall tone and feel of the album. it?s also designed to be listened to loud, but it works well quiet, too. I?m not sure if it’s ‘dark ambient’, or ‘ambient’
at all. I guess that’s not for me to decide. For me – It just ‘is’….

And now, another batch of new additions, this time from the Canadian Dataobscura label and its new offshoot, Blue Oasis.

Description Without a Place – Filaments
(Blue Oasis/DataObscura category)
(Price: $13.99)
2008. Filaments brings together, for the first time, the field-recording & sample manipulations of James McDougall (Entia Non) with the more synth-based skills of Anthony Paul Kerby (The Circular Ruins, Lammergeyer, Nunc Stans). The result is a remarkable and unified flow of creativity that is ripe with juicy sonic details and moody atmospheres, and that is woven through with subtle melodic threads. Contemporary, glitchy, detailed, and musically absorbing, this is a work to come back to again and again. Filaments was composed via long-distance collaboration – Australia to Canada. Final compositions and mixing by APK….

The Winterhouse – Lost
(Blue Oasis/DataObscura category)
(Price: $13.99)
Follow-up to the acclaimed debut album on Blue Oasis, Slow Promises, by the combined talents of Robert Davies and Anthony Paul Kerby (The Circular Ruins, Lammergeyer, Nunc Stans). The drone mastery of Davies is overlaid with Kerby\’s melodic subtlety and sonic creativity in an organic, addictive, and flowing musical narrative. Much of the music has a brooding vastness and grainy density, with scatterings of embedded field recordings and curious sound baubles. These are melancholic stories of loss and isolation, but told with an artist\’s eye for the beauty of it all.

Lost stands as another testament to the power and depth of contemporary ambient music and its ability to open remarkable sonic vistas and meaningful moving landscapes…

Entia Non – Updrafts
(Blue Oasis/DataObscura category)
(Price: $13.99)
On Updrafts, Australian sound artist James McDougall serves up another gorgeous helping of scrambled field recordings, reconstructions, brittle textures, warm mechanisms, environmental rumblings, and a host of minute sonic abstractions and abrasions. The aural canvas is a rich shimmering, and sometimes skittering, collage of our human sound-world. Ripe with details, subtle developments, and underlying ambience, but flowing down unforseen channels like a stream-of-consciousness narrative. Microtonal and minimal, yet often lush and so very human, Updrafts is a welling up of the sonic world surrounding us every day. It is a testament to a world heard … but not heard. An admirable follow-up release to the earlier Fold….

Robert Davies – Geography of Memory
(Blue Oasis/DataObscura category)
(Price: $13.99)
There is a thread running through all of Davies\’ work, it can perhaps best be named phantasy. Song titles signify these very visual, phantastic worlds, and the music moves us through them as in a dream. We drift, transfixed, within uncertain landscapes suffused with evolving visions, shadows, and apparitions. The land of faerie, of phantoms, and of the unconscious. Robert\’s music is founded in this subterranean, subconscious realm, and is grounded with deep drones that gently weave a sombre and mysterious web of enveloping sound through which we return to something more primal, but also to something more magical….

More review-age, and today it’s Drifts by Ben Fleury-Steiner.

Ben Fleury-Steiner-Drifts

“Hypnos has made something of a habit of resurrecting out-of-print releases, with the latest an engrossing hour-long set by Ben
Fleury-Steiner previously issued in 2005 on his own Gears of Sand label. Mastered by Robert Rich, the oft-mercurial material
evidences a greater-than-normal level of activity and tension than the ambient listener might be accustomed to but there’s no shortage
of becalmed moments too. The album’s stylistic character is immediately established in the opening piece ?Sundial? when tones gracefully
arc against a contrastingly bold backdrop of carousel-like organ percolations. In many of the subsequent ten pieces, a similar tension
between hyperactivity and restfulness appears, with a few well-placed meditative excursions offering occasional bouts of relief: for
every ?Descriptives? and its Eno-like percussive flurries, in other words, there’s a beatific setting of ambient calm such as ?Heal.?
Sometimes the two tendencies fuse into one, as happens during ?Flicker? when shimmering floodlights rapidly cross paths until the
pace slows to a state of frozen stillness, allowing the synthetic tones and washes to gently illuminate one another. ?Cicada? similarly
perpetuates the album’s predilection for merging gently flowing melodies with nimble percussive patterning which, naturally, calls to mind
the whirring chirp of the titular insects. There’s even a four-part suite titled ?Dreams? but don’t be put off by the New Age taint of the title
as the music proves amply rewarding. In the opening section (?Somnium Scipionis?), the restless churn of a machine rhythm underpins
the constant flutter of congealing synth tones, and in the third (?The Dust That Lies Between?), frog-like croaks burble below the track’s
shimmering surfaces. In one of the album’s most beautiful settings, the suite’s second part, ?Veritatis Splendor,? entrances with a
yearning and unabashedly emotive character that emerges as fragile crystalline tones swell while the long-form fourth, ?Absense In
Remota,? impresses just as much when its soft, tranquil exhalations lend it an uplifting, even celestial quality.”

“On the sub division Secret Sounds we find Ben Fleury-Steiner, an active musician in the field of atmospheric and electronic music, as
well as being a label boss himself, for Gears Of Sand. His ‘Drifts’ release is a bit long and seems to working around the similar idea:
rhythms are used, light weight instead of heavy bouncing dance pieces. Rhythms almost without bass end that guide the tapestries laid
out on the bed of synthesizers (analogue or digital. I don’t know but I think the latter). It’s not always an easy marriage of the two ends,
but at least, and that I think is the great thing about this release, he tries to move out the closed circle of ambient music. The rhythms don’t
add up to being ambient house, since they are not smooth enough, but have a wider sense of experimentalism, which at least tries to shed
new lights on the subject of ambient music. That alone is worth your attention, me thinks.”

More reviews of recent Hypnos & HSS & Binary CDs, this time Birds of Tin’s Rinpoche.

Birds of Tin - Rinpoche

“An animal of altogether different character is Birds of Tin, the pseudonym under which experimental sound artist Brooke
Oates records. His Hypnos Secret Sounds debut Rinpoche features two long untitled improvisations, the first forty minutes
and the second thirty-five, recorded in 2002 and with no post-recording editing performed. On the evidence of Rinpoche, the
Birds of Tin style might be characterized as ?aquatic? as episodes swim through the dense mix, each one slowly supplanting
the other; ?phantasmagoric? might be an even better descriptor, given the heady manner with which sounds and samples
continually intermingle and change shape in these ultra-dense collages. Oates seems to have an encyclopedic library at
his fingertips: the opening piece includes episodes of soft chanting, faint industrial rhythms grinding in the distance while
bright synth glissandi flit rapidly about in the foreground, the deep moan of a choir, percussive rattles, child-like whispers,
the elegant playing of a string orchestra, the bright waver of an alto saxophone, techno-styled thrums of lapping clicks, and
so on. The ?heavier? track two opens with an extended drone passage of intense flurries that evokes the relentless churn
at a cyclone’s center but the track eventually settles into a more even-tempered, neo-psychedelic state with vinyl crackle,
electrical resonance, percussive noise, and aggressive swirls taking turns in the spotlight. If anything, the second piece
moves Oates’ music away from ambient territory completely and pushes it in the direction of Philip Jeck’s woozy vinyl-based
constructions (a few inexplicable seconds of singing even surfaces at the half-hour mark).”

2009.02.14

Here we are playing catch-up again, posting recent reviews for several Hypnos releases this next few days… first
up, Echoes of Polyhymnia, our “various artists” compilation featuring ambient and atmospheric music
by female artists. Our thanks, again, to the reviewers for their attention.

“Women artists as a group are seriously under-represented in the Ambient Music genre. The Hypnos label rectifies this situation somewhat with the
release of Echoes From Polyhymnia (67’55″), an anthology presenting ten works by ten innovative and imaginative female sound designers. Although each
track seems drawn from a different background, this CD sparkles with a common tender energy. Among those contributing to this effort is Sara Ayers and
her piece “There Was No More Time”. Within its sustaining space are heard layers of voices and synthesizer pads, all rising, shifting and receding in
dramatic confluence. Kristin Miltner realizes a restless extended soundscape full of distinctive vocal textures and curious metallic tinged drones. Her
“Slew Wave” is a rare work that is as sophisticated as it is lovely. “Wave-Particle Duality” by Gydja creates an odd quietude. Its breathing synth
chords conjure up a magical atmosphere as intermittent spacey drips, beeps and chirps keep the listener from drifting away. On “She Forgot, She Dreamed”
Lena Griffin continues her foray into the dark and reverberant tones she elicits from a viola and digital signal processing. The remaining tracks
provide equally wonderful experiences. From sound collage and tone poem to pulsing sequencer rides and breathy celestial choirs, Echoes From Polyhymnia
moves easily from the experimental and academic, to the sentimental and spiritual – while keeping a cohesive vision and common destination. Hopefully
more women will venture into this genre – bringing with them their inherent qualities and distinctive abilities. Ambient Music can only benefit from
more diversity among its artists.”

–Reviewed by Chuck van Zyl/STAR’S END

.

“Currently listening to Echoes From Polyhymnia. I haven’t listened to this in awhile. It is an excellent release. I’ve stated before that I’m not a big
fan of compilations. Some of the recent Hypnos comps have made me rethink my stance.”

–Harry Dibrell on the Hypnos Forum

.

“Hypnos manager and composer Lena Griffin curated this superb specially-themed compilation which features ambient sound works composed and recorded
exclusively by women (in Greek mythology, Polyhymnia was the Muse of sacred hymn, hence the choice of recording title). Though the ?female composers?
angle provides an imaginative hook, it’s ultimately of secondary import (if not altogether irrelevant) once the music starts. What’s more notable is
the recording’s stylistic diversity, with the artists exploring multiple genres (ambient naturally but also drone and electro-acoustic) and moods
(everything from pretty to portentous) in the seventy-minute set’s ten compositions.

The collection begins promisingly with ?Nufon,? a reverie-inducing overture by Margaret Noble wherein glimmering and chiming tones dance lightly, but
the skies darken immediately thereafter when Stellaria Fennica’s (real name Mari Aho) ? Hibernia ? arrives with dramatic, piano-based tribal atmospheres
and Niklas Adrian’s hypnotic vocal chants. Kristin Miltner follows with the release’s longest piece, ?Slew Wave,? a thirteen-minute celestial setting
created using computers, bells, birds, and wordless angelic voice that resembles a flower blossoming in slow motion. Elsewhere, Torontonian Rose Bolton
contributes ?An Unheard Message,? a pensive meditation for piano, cello, and percussive textures that is as much an exploration of silence and
reverberation, while Clarissa Borba layers vibes and chimes over a medium-pitched string drone in the melancholy rumination ?Floating Tones.? Also
present are Sara Ayers’ gently flowing streams of choir-like tones (?There Was No More Time?), Gydja’s humid oasis of awakening organisms (?Wave-
Particle Duality?), and The Floating World’s softly piercing flute tones and phantom whooshes (?Kanam?). In Griffin ‘s own haunting closer ?She Forgot,
She Dreamed,? choir-like moans well up from deep, echo-laden caverns and ethereal viola tones stretch across vast spaces. Echoes of Polyhymnia
ultimately proves to be a fine addition to the Hypnos catalogue, regardless of whatever gender-related conceptualizing entered into its creation.”

It’s been busy around here through the holiday season, with weather emergencies here in Portland, out of town guests, holiday obligations,
that whole “changing the calendar” thing, and more. Anyway, we failed to post a news update about a new Hypnos Secret Sounds release
that we actually made available right at the end of 2008, so here it is… The Glittering Domain by Deepspace

Artist: Deepspace
Title: The Glittering Domain
Label: Hypnos Secret Sounds (Ltd CDR)

Deepspace - The Glittering Domain

2008. Deepspace is a pseudonym for Mirko Ruckels, a
German-born ambient/electronic musician who now resides in
Brisbane, Australia. His previous releases have been
self-released, and The Glittering Domain is his
debut on Hypnos Secret Sounds.

We at Hypnos view Deepspace as one of the
top up-and-coming ambient music talents of the past few
years, and electroambientspace.com agrees,
naming him New Artist of the Year for 2007 and saying:
“Mirko Ruckels is a great new talent, a cross between
Steve Roach and Stars of the Lid, with a dash of Budd
and Eno.”

Abstract and definitely “ambient” in nature, The
Glittering Domain
simultaneously exhibits a strong
musical sensibility, with a sound and structure reminiscent
of artists such as Vidna Obmana and Numina. Though Hypnos
may be best known for unstructured “drone” style recordings,
we really enjoy a recording like this one that has more
of a tonal basis.

Deepspace described by stillstream.com:
“Lush, exquisite, flawless, refined, striking, beautiful…
we could go on and on with adjectives to describe the
music of Deepspace. One of our favorite discoveries in
the past year, this is an artist to keep a close eye
on – and one we encourage all our listeners to visit
right away.”
