Francisco López – Untitled (2017) –Regularly $11.99, right now just $7.99

Digipak

“‘Untitled (2017)’ compiles seven works that were created in the year 2017 gathering soundsources collected all over the world, from the Himalaya mountains to South Africa, from wildlife atmospheres to urban noises. The flow and structure of the CD stands out in López’ body of work as it moves away from the slowly building big and dense crescendo movement Francisco López is so famous for. Instead, untitled (2017) is very dynamic and moving, even hectic at times, and navigates the listener through a palette of sounds that feel primitive and even aggressive at time times and dark and brooding in patches.” –aufabwegen.de

Asmus Tietchens + Liquid Sky – Monoposto –Regularly $11.99, right now just $7.99

“A co-release between Die Stadt and aufabwegen finally the Tietchens reissue series continues with ‘Marches Funebres.’ originally released by Multimood (Sweden) in 1989.” –aufabwegen.de

Marc Behrens – Mutt Att Narc Imm –Regularly $11.99, right now just $7.99

Digipak

“The three pieces on this album are steps in an evolution of live concert pieces. Each of the title abbreviations indicates a specific sound set. The titles (Imm, Att Imm Mut and Mut Att Narc Imm) become genetic sequences forming the possibilities of the sound set combinations. The concrete sounds featured in the various sets are recordings made with a circular water reservoir (Kleiner Wasserspeicher, Berlin), various electric kettles, a wet towel, metal percussion, and metal jetties at Marseille harbour. Starting with the Imm set in 2006, the evolution halts with the full Mut Att Narc and Imm sets in 2016. Performances of the different evolutionary stages took place in Europe, South America, South Africa, Asia and Australia. With the release of the Mut Att Narc Imm album in 2018, this cycle of work becomes recorded music. ” –aufabwegen.de

Konrad Kraft – Temporary Audiosculptures and Artefacts –Regularly $11.99, right now just $7.99

Digipak

“On ‘Temporary Audiosculptures and Artefacts’: After 15 years of silence this is the first major release by Duesseldorf electronic artist Detlef Funder, aka Konrad Kraft. In the early days of experimentation he was one of the leading figures behind the label SDV (Stimme des Volkes) who put out stuff by such great projects like Strafe Fuer Rebellion, Paul Schuetze and TUU. For ‘Temporary Audiosculptures and Artefacts’ Detlef has changed his trademark ambient sound flows to resemble something that sounds like a cross between fade out post-industrial, concrete sounds and a desire for filmic density.” –aufabwegen.de

Artificial Memory Trace – Tidal –Regularly $11.99, right now just $7.99

Digipak

“Tidal zone is a fluid line between land and sea, a site of perpetual motion and metamorphoses.
During 2008 – 2010 I collected a variety of sounds in coastal areas of Western and Southern Ireland and on the other side of Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland, Canada: the remote fishing village of Conche, the ghost settlement of Crouse, and the St.Georges peninsula. I recorded underwater: crackles of decapods, dolphins, mink-whales, a breaking iceberg, a sea-otter fishing in the harbor. And on land: a wooden church crackling in the wind, engines of boats, pebble-surf, sea-gulls …
All sounds and individual sequences used in the composition were recorded as-it-is. There is no other transformation than editing and mixing. Though sounds are organized in groups by the location of recordings, there is no intention to re-create an acoustic representation of the location itself. Sounds are chosen solely by morphologic associations and treated as abstractions.” –aufabwegen.de

Asmus Tietchens & Frans De Waard – Oordeel –Regularly $11.99, right now just $7.99

Digipak

“This collaboration was bound to happen someday! Out of mutual respect and admiration for each other’s work Asmus Tietchens and Frans de Waard decided to work on some music together. The result is ‘Oordeel’ (dutch for ‘judgement’) – eleven tracks of diverse character and subtle beauty. From distorted groans and gritty pulses to delicate and abstract sound layers Tietchens and de Waard have created a fascinating sound world of bizarre beauty.” –aufabwegen.de

O Yuki Conjugate – Sleepwalker –Regularly $11.99, right now just $7.99

Digipak

“First new album for over a decade. Sleepwalker documents O Yuki Conjugate’s recent live shows, doubling as a soundtrack to a film of the same name by founder member Andrew Hulme. Comprising ten new tracks taken from 24 live shows in nine countries across Europe, Sleepwalker captures OYC’s current musical direction, a blend of plangent keyboards, abstract guitars and electronic rhythms, presented in OYC’s inimical style.” –aufabwegen.de

Paul Schütze – Without Thought –Regularly $11.99, right now just $7.99

Digipak

“Without Thought was conceived as an installation work for video projection / stereo sound /
stereo fragrance. The first component was the film, shot in Greece in 2016. The vantage point is a clifftop I have visited many times. A strange sense that the water curves up into the hemisphere of the sky here is always startling. The surface of the sea perpetually coruscates with patterns describing wind movement. The entire landscape feels sentient. The sound was constructed in direct response to the image. The stereo image is unusual in that it has no centre. Every element is perpetually moving in the image field. For this reason, it works best heard through speakers. The sound is both harmonically, structurally and texturally unresolving and fluid. My aim was to amplify the emphatic formlessness of the waters. The olfactory elements were created last. They began as a complete fragrance encompassing both the marine and terrestrial aspects of the place. The image you see, while excluding the land necessitates the viewer be land-bound so the two zones are inextricably connected in this film. The complete fragrance was then split into earth and sea elements. The two groupings are diffused from positions in the space mirroring those of the sound diffusion. The two scents blend to varying degrees in the space depending upon the position and movement of the viewer/auditor/olfactory. This work continues a theme of anti-narrative which has been present in my sound-works for nearly four decades. We make stories to emboss meaning onto the surfaces of life. Those surfaces shrug of our scribbling like leviathans in troubled slumber.

Simon Whetham – Hydrostatic –Regularly $11.99, right now just $7.99

Digipak

“‘Hydrostatic‘ was commissioned by the McNeill Street Pumping Station New Music Festival, Shreveport, Louisiana, USA in November 2011, and presented as a multi-channel performance.

Simon Whetham spent more than a week exploring the site, capturing the sounds of the space, the vibrations of the buildings, the spirit of the community and perhaps the echoes of past activity…
Mastered by Miguel Carvalhais. -Simon Whetham – Biography 2013” –aufabwegen.de

Asmus Tietchens + Richard Chartier – Fabrication 2 (2CD) –Regularly $14.99, right now just $10.99

2CD Digipak

“‘Fabrication 2’ is the sequel to ‘Fabrication,’ the first collaboration between Richard Chartier and Asmus Tietchens released in 2007. Whereas for the first collab the idea developed from the project around reinterpretations of Chartier’s ‘Postfabricated,’ this time the efforts where directly focused on the reinterpretation of specific basic sound material. This basic sound material can be found on the first disc in the set ‘Prefabrication 2,’ which was constructed by Richard Chartier alone in Montreal and Washington, DC. ‘Fabrication 2’ is the reworking of this sonic basis by Asmus Tietchens. Whereas the first CD has traces of subtle dematerialized rhythmic structures the second disc is a study in minimalism and concentrated sound manipulation.” –aufabwegen.de

Møhr/Maeror Tri – Hafenstadt –Regularly $11.99, right now just $7.99

Digipak

“On Hafenstadt:
This music was originally planned to form a part of the third tape box in the MØHR interpretation series of ZNS TAPES. In this series different artists got an individual 30-minutes-piece of basic material by MØHR to be interpreted it in any way: Using it as a backing tape and adding some more tracks, getting inspired and doing something unique in the spirit of the basic material, deconstruct and arrange it anew. The invited artists had any opportunity to re-work the source material. For the actual release the basic material was placed on side A and the interpretation on side B, enabling the listener to compare the basic and the final sound. Three tapes were compiled as one tape box linked by a loose theme. The first box, Bürokratie, contained works by DAS KONZENTRAT, BESTATTUNGSINSTITUT and SUICIDE COMMANDO (released in 1990), the second, Kulturschock, contained works by ANDREW CHALK/DARREN TATE, ECTOPLASMIC EMBRYO EXPERIENCE and FLAGRANTs D’ELI (released in 1991). The third one, which was to contain Hafenstadt by MAEROR TRI (as well as material of PBK and THE HATERS), has never been released due to the sudden end of ZNS TAPES. We’re convinced that this combination of basic stuff plus musical reworking is still an interesting and exciting experience for the audience, maybe especially after more than 20 years in the archives.” (Andreaz Vogel) –aufabwegen.de

Sale: Seren Ffordd

We’ve got the latest Seren Ffordd album from our HYPNOS label on sale for you this week, as well as a special deal on a Seren Ffordd 2-pack! The low prices will be good through April 3rd or while supplies last.

Seren Ffordd – Dreaming in the Well of Slow Shadows –$7.99

Dreaming in the Well of Slow Shadows is a new longform piece from one of our favorite Ambient music artists. Based in Wales, Seren Ffordd has previously released many albums on the the Umbra label, several of which were later reissued on our own Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint. He also collaborated with the late ambient master Oöphoi on their album The Martian Chronicles, released by Hypnos in 2011.

Of his latest recording, Seren Ffordd says:

Some music arrives quickly – almost completing itself. However this album has not been like that, taking it’s own time, requiring periods of patience and silent waiting.

The title ‘Dreaming In The Well Of Slow Shadows’ was inspired by the seemingly endless well of imagination out of which we create art, music, ideas, civilisations….The slow depths from which formless and incoherent energies arise and take on shape, form as they are birthed into the world.

It was a number of years before the ‘Well’ first found its voice as the recorded sounds of a visiting friend’s harp playing began to take shape and form in the studio.

The album is composed almost completely from transformed and sculpted harp with minimal addition of other sounds to add to the sonic textures, patterns and shiftings… The album is a longform single track that moves slowly and deeply while shimmering like a mirage, the textures and tones drifting over time.

Dreaming in the Well of Slow Shadows is packaged in our new CD release format, a plastic-free eco-wallet, rather than a digital or jewel case. The Hypnos team hopes you will enjoy this deep and rich soundscape, and we look forward to bringing you more ambient, drone and minimalist recordings in the near future.

Seren Ffordd 2-pack — $12.99

As a special offer with the release of Dreaming in the Well of Slow Shadows by Seren Ffordd, we are offering it in a special 2-pack deal with his previous collaboration with Oophoi, The Martian Chronicles (released on Hypnos in 2011).

The Martian Chronicles, inspired by Ray Bradbury’s story collection of the same name, sounds very much like the soundtrack to a mysterious and strange science fiction film that exists only in the imaginations of Seren Ffordd and Oöphoi. These seven tracks, while slow, moody and at times weirdly alien, also evoke a drama and emotional depth absent from much recent ambient music. It’s a complex and beautiful mixture of electronic instruments, field recordings and percussion.

These artists will both likely be familiar to Hypnos listeners. Seren Ffordd has released several albums on our Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint, and also contributed to the Hypnos compilation Sounds of a Universe Overheard. The name Seren Ffordd (real name Andy Benford) is Welsh for Star Road, Way of Stars or Milky Way.

Oöphoi himself released Athlit in 2002, Distance to Zero (with Paul Vnuk) in 2006, and his Nebulae group project album Path of White Clouds in 2011, all on Hypnos. Gianluigi Gasparetti, the man behind Oöphoi, first became known for creating the excellent Italian music periodical Deep Listenings. His Oöphoi persona burst onto the ambient music scene in the late 1990s and quickly became one of the most talented and prolific sound artists around. He founded the now-defunct labels Umbra and Penumbra, which released the earliest recordings of Seren Ffordd. After working together in this capacity for several years The Martian Chronicles is their first collaboration, but not their last; the pair has already completed another full album worth of material.
